Class of '96 requesting any helpful hints for acceptance. We just want her to get in. She's a good student from Chapin but her dad's fraternity days probably hurt her SATs (1170). Any advice on the best major for acceptance or any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Suggest taking SAT prep courses to give it a boost...plenty of opportunities around & free practice tests are all over the Internet. Alot of kids raise their score about 100 points per attempt with serious preparation. My daughter is a rising junior and she's already taken it 3 times as a part of the Duke TIP program.

The thread about Clemson being rated the 12th best public university says the incoming SAT score is 1245.

For the SAT, the middle 50 percent of admitted students have test scores ranging from 1170 to 1330. For the ACT, the middle 50 percent score range is 26 to 31 for the composite.
Make sure you check LEGACY block on application, Clemson does give some preference, less popular majors will help but transfer once she gets there is challenging. Admissions office counselor can tell you colleges with most space each year.
If you have not done a orientation visit, go do one they will give you latest numbers and tips.

the average SAT at Clemson is 1280. You need a 1170 to get in, a 1380 is pretty much an automatic. A 1440 will get you a look from Ivy League schools, but probably not in unless you have a 3.8 or better in high school.

Apparently you look at three different sources, you get three different numbers. Prep Scholars says 1280, Princeton Review says 1250, and the source you have says 1245.

My oldest daughter just finished in EE and my youngest daughter is a sophomore, both of them took the SAT & the ACT multiple times to get the scores they needed. They took prep test as suggested. They went to Mid Carolina High School. Both were in the top 10% of there high school class which plays a big part also extra curricular activities and referrals from teachers help. Both of mine were hell bent to get to Clemson regardless .(they were born to bleed orange) it was the only school they applied to and decided early that if they did not get in they were going to bridge(what a lot of SC residents are having to do,SC public schools are behind other states-another issue) Hoping the best for your daughter

My youngest just applied yesterday. He chose only to take the ACT with the revamping of the SAT this year. He wanted higher scores than he had last fall so I invested in a one on one program called Testive. Pricey but worth every penny...his scores rose dramatically! My daughter had even lower SAT scores. She does not do well on standardized tests. We did the weekend SAT prep classes, etc. but her scores just did not improve. In her comments she described in detail why Clemson was the perfect fit for her in particular the major. She wanted to be a chiropractor so the preprofessional program was perfect. It would allow her to attend Clemson for three or less years and then go straight to chiropractic school. She would then receive her Clemson degree after a year in chiro school. She was also very busy in high school she highlighted her leadership skills (cheerleading captain), artistic skills (chorus), debate team, volunteer activities. Having alumni in the family does help too.
She like others mentioned only applied to Clemson and was committed to going through the Bridge program or whatever it took to attend Clemson.
She is now a doctor practicing in Atlanta. She finished Clemson in two years with 90 credit hours in biochem, physics, anatomy,etc. SAT scores are not the only predictor of success.
My suggestion is find a noncompetitive major that she can show a connection to and a passion for and highlight all of the other things she brings.
There is one degree that I know of that is new and does not have many students. It is the Youth Development Studies major. It was a new online major that started last year. About half of the classes are online.

qualified for Palmetto Fellows this past year so we're hoping that gets him into the engineering program as he wants that badly. Like the other suggestions, have her take the practice tests online and/or take SAT prep classes. Good luck and Go Tigers!

That's not true for all majors. My son with a 3.2 in Biological Sciences was not allowed to transfer into Health Sciences because it was full.

My daughter is a Senior this fall. She applied in Education and had to bridge because it is small and was full. She has not been able to transfer in to education in the 2 years since bridging. She will graduate in May with a History degree. History is very open so she has taken a lot of education classes but I am not sure what this does to her job prospects. As a lot of others have said she was determined she was going to be a Tiger (Her mom and I are both alumni)

when I was applying, I was told by many admissions workers and teachers that SAT isn't necessarily the most important criteria used. Some kids just don't test well, but they'll have fine grades. Any volunteer or work experience that can be added to applications is good. Course schedule and diversity of classes helps as well.

Certainly have her re-take the SAT but her score isn't the "be all end all" for admissions determinations. The University also looks at class rank, GPA, and cirriculum among other things.

My daughter spent a month worrying about her first SAT and royally screwed it, a 1320. Next time I convinced her not to worry and treat it like a normal test and go out with friends the night before and she went up 150 points to 1470. My advice, tell her to worry about the numbers or anything like that, relax and take it like a normal test. Oh, and most people usually go up about 50 points on their second try on average. Good luck and tell her just to relax.

...it's really more of the referral she gets from the counselor at the high school she attends and the rank in her class GPA wise. It also has something to do with WHICH school she has been attending that gives the recommendation. The SAT of 1200 from a high end private prep school will go a little further than the 1200 SAT from a less connected and organized 1A rural school.

You don't have to take all the sections at once. You don't even have to take the writing section. Clemson focuses on the 2 major sections.
I took it 3 times in high school. The first time I got a 1390 with a 690 in reading/writing and a 700 in math. I knew I could do better in the math so I retook it. I ended up getting a perfect 800 without taking the other sections and without spending the extra sections time on math, because that would be cheating.
At first they said they wouldn't accept the 2nd math score because I hadn't taken the other sections, so I retook it a 3rd time and got a 790 on the math and only filled in the bubbles and wrote song lyrics for the essay. They then accepted the 800 as it obviously wasn't a fluke.
So if she has a good score in one section, but not the other, let her focus her mental effort on the one section. Make sure she fills in the other section. Also, she can't take it more than 3 times or they won't pick the best sections.

and we were very pleased...however, we would have rather had her go straight to Clemson. She's always wanted to be a teacher and she took a chance of going into the bridge program as an English major, did well, and has now switched to Education.
There are a few majors that you can't "bridge" and the student has to apply once they bridge to CU. I believe she had to finish (1) semester at CU then apply to the Education program. It will add another year to college...not a bad thing for her; however it is for us $$$$.
What was your experience with the Bridge program?
