Paid my property taxes today that increase every year

Greenville County has the 2nd or 3rd highest property taxes in South Carolina. I wish real estate property taxes weren't due mid January between Christmas and income tax season. And for me, it's so soon after homeowner's insurance payment late November that went up about 20% (thanks Helene).

So I'm a little salty and have been trolling some trollers on Tnet this morning with all their hand-wringing over their versions of Dabo's recent bad decisions despite the overall success of the past decade and a half.

If I offend anyone, I'm sorry. If I didn't offend you, I'll try harder. I should probably take a lot of this Tnet banter with a grain of salt. It pales in comparison to a lot of this life stuff.

Anyone else make their real estate property tax payment today?

But I don't know how much it helps on the federal taxes anymore.

I wish they would call it what it is - rent - there isn't property ownership in this state.

Agree with the point though - property taxes are criminal.

Not so sure about that? Plus Georgia uses Valorem Tax which excludes like 11yr old vehicles while SC doesn't offer much VT tax. I think vehicle has to be 25yrs old be that happens. When all the taxes are added up in SC, we are highly taxed with income, properties (includes everything you own, boats, motors, land, houses, rvs, campers, etc) then add registrations, tags, as well as absurd hurricane insurance prices, SC is not cheap. I have friends in Connecticut that pay double in taxes for similar priced house but their vehicle taxes, state income taxes, registrations are all substantially less. Then you have Florida with no State income tax, AK no State income tax and they pay residents from oil fund too, TN, ETC. SC used to be cheap but not at all anymore.

and I owe just over $200 for my 2010 Toyota, for my annual tax. Since it's pre-2013, I get to pay the title ad valorem tax every year. Yay.

I'm in City of Atlanta, and using the Greenevillecounty.org property tax estimator my property tax bill in Greenville would be about 76% of what it is here in ATL, assuming the same appraised value.

Also worth noting that our combined sales tax rate is nearly 3% higher in ATL, as well.

So now I have to make the property tax and insurance payments myself. I could make the insurance payments monthly but prefer a lump sum with one annual payment. Clemson Ranger says you can make tax payments monthly, I didn't know that.

You can still set aside the money monthly and just hold it to pay one lump sum. Then it's just part of the monthly budget and not a "big one time hit" right after the holidays.

Deposit the money monthly to a high yield savings account. Then you get around 4% interest while waiting to pay at the end of the year.

Everybody has to pay their fair share of Schools, police, fire fighters, roads and infrastructure maintenance.
This past year, money market was at 5%. If one puts monthly what they owe into a money market, there would be money set a aside for taxes with a little bonus money for fishing and hunting.
If your taxes went up, it typically means that the value of the property went up, so that it a good thing in my mind.

I understand taxes are needed and approve.
I would approve more if they were not wasted and stolen by politicians.

Property taxes going up may be OK if you are a speculator as to your home expecting not to live there forever. Otherwise, rising property values and higher taxes can cripple one.
A home you could afford can become too expensive to keep.

I am not a fan of property taxes. Tax it on the sale, but not every year after.
I know that aint going to happen so at least keep the tax at the price when you first bought so folks don't loose a home/farm they have had for decades.

I live in Oconee.
One can get a tax reduction when over 65. "The Homestead Exemption is a complete exemption of taxes on the first $50,000".

I have lived on the same lot for 24 years, I am 78 - had the exemption since 65.

My home burned and I rebuilt on the same lot.
Now I am not getting the exemption because I am not seen as a resident in the new house (since Oct 2023).
I have to file all sorts of proof I live here. I don't have birth certificates, marriage license, or anything to prove anything as all burned in the fire.

All my stuff for decades is there on file where I paid taxes on my home, cars, and boats for years, but somehow I have to magic up new documents.
I hate government and all bureaucrats.

One fun thing is I have never had a birth certificate. Things were different in the 40's.
To get into the Army used a certified letter saying my Mom agreed I was born. She used a notation from the family BIBLE as proof of when.

Instead, in 1973 we went to the marriage capitol of SC -> York.
Pay your money and get in line, it was simple and nice, as was the latter celebration we had with Boones Farm Apple wine.
I got a stamped legal document, but there aint no copies of that to be had these days.

Still better than Florida.
I just recently got exiled to Florida and when I bought my house I noted that the 2022 taxes were $1250.00. I thought that's not so bad. My taxes in Fountain Inn were close to that. Then a month after I moved in they notified me that the new taxes based on the sale of the house would be $4800 which went up to $5100 this year. No income tax here, but they skewer everyone that owns property. The property tax is the worst as it comes down to people that pay no tax voting to increase the taxes on people that actually invested in the state. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that none of us actually own our property. It is just an illusion because when you stop paying that rent to the state they come take it.

Higher property values and rising taxes are of zero benefit to me as I don't intend to sell (unless forced), just want to live where I have for decades.

All owner occupied residences in SC get a huge break on school operating taxes (General Fund). Check your tax notice. If your residence is valued above the exemption limit consider yourself fortunate and relatively wealthy. No one, mostly state republicans, wants to fund public education. But will use public funds for private schools. Speaks volumes.

Well Amigo, there was a time when both sales taxes and property taxes were deductible from our income tax returns way back when i was younger. However, a guy named Reagan came along and sales tax deductions have not been allowable deductions since 1986. Same with state gas taxes as well as deductions for credit card interest. You can thank him for those changes.
Property taxes were deductible from income tax returns until 2017. You can thank your new orange savior for that change.
And don't spout the BS about lower tax rates, higher standard deductions, etc. Those mostly benefited the the ultra rich.
I know, i know.....you had no idea did you? Check it out if you doubt me.
