Clemson and FSU are in a really bad spot

Feb 26, 2023, 9:09 PM

For the immediate future (5 yrs?), Greg Sankey will decide Clemson's and FSU's future, not Graham Neff nor Jim Phillips.

It would be extremely expensive for the SEC to raid the ACC. And even if they decide to do so, they'll first come after UNC and UVA. It is not about footballs and records, it's about eyeballs and sales, and unfortunately, UNC and UVA have huge cachet and alumni bellybutton counts - especially from the standpoint of university presidents and TV executives.

Think of it as you and 15 buddies being partners in a law firm. You are only going to add new partners if you are very convinced they will bring in enough billing revenue to both pay for themselves, and increase your net profit from the partnership. The hard reality is UNC and UVA bring that possibility to the SEC more so than FSU and Clemson.

However unworthy and historically pitiful they may be, the coots laugh all the way to the bank, each and every year. The Tigers and the Noles need a hail mary.

Bingo. Clemson is as good as any current brand in the SEC or Big 10.

Feb 26, 2023, 11:31 PM

Clemson and FSU are in the front of the line should there be any further expansion. Otherwise the ACC will need to expand.

Nothing to be concerned about, at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They are?

I had not heard that.

Clemson and FSU are WAY ahead of whoever is third.

Conferences want to know: Will the revenue you bring in equal the payout you get? The primary revenue is TV contract.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In this case, use of the word "coot" is warranted...

Academically, Clemson is fine. You may be thinking about the research level that the B1G desires. Like membership in the University Research Association. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universities_Research_Association Which the Coots are members, so it isn't all that.

The whole "school x brings the y market" makes no sense to me

Feb 26, 2023, 9:14 PM

Because its usually garbage football programs in big cities, but news flash, no one watches those teams, so how are they "bringing the market"?

FSU have brought in over 40% of the football income to the ACC?

Pitt, BC and the Cuse are not UNC and UVA

1

Feb 26, 2023, 9:20 PM [ in reply to The whole "school x brings the y market" makes no sense to me ]

The latter two are the flagship programs of large states. With the exception of Penn State, nobody cares about CFB north of the Mason Dixon. In hindsight, the decision to add Pitt, BC, the Cuse and VT has not worked out, but, somewhat in his defense, who else was Swofford going to add, and he needed grow his portfolio.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pitt, BC and the Cuse are PRO football tv markets

Feb 26, 2023, 9:52 PM

Do they really bring in that many consumers? Maybe when Clemson, FSU are in town.

Could always go to the Big 10…

Feb 26, 2023, 9:18 PM

For the very reasons they aren’t attractive to the SEC they would be to the Big 10. Just think of the TV ratings for Clemson v Penn State and Clemson v Ohio every year. Same for FSU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem is UVA and UNC would prolly get good

Feb 26, 2023, 9:26 PM

if they were incentivized to do so. And they could get competitive with the Big 10 powers pretty quickly if the B10 money comes rolling their way.

Now way. Clemson and FSU tv viewership is 70% higher then the other acc school s. Including UVA and UNC. This stat was in the FSU presentation. FSU was making a case for a bigger piece of the acc pie as you know. You can find the presentation on Twitter.

You haven’t been paying attention.

Any expert will tell you the two teams not already in the SEC or Big Ten that are most desired are Notre Dame and Clemson.

Go look at the ratings for college football and you’ll see ESPN’s highest rated games include Clemson. No one cares about UNC football.

UNC and UVA won't go anywhere without NCSU and VaTech tagging on. The Politicians in NC and VA won't allow it. Plus, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say gee I can't wait to get home tonight to watch that UVA game in prime time.
