Defense struggles to finish
For three-plus quarters, Brent Venables was happy with his Clemson defense Saturday. But the final two drives by Troy proved to be a struggle for the Tigers. Full Story » |

In other words we got pushed around by Troy and if a couple of calls or no calls go their way we lose. The O finally gets it going, get a 27-10 lead in the 4th and the D starts playing like crap. This team does not feed off each other very well. It's seems when the D makes a big play the O does nothing with it. Then when the O puts us up by a couple of scores the D gives it right back.

On a hot day fighting their A$SES off, I guess they were a little gassed at the end. Troy's offense possessed for 33 and a half minutes of the game....

The first and last TD you can blame on the coaching staff.
On the first TD, Venables got outcoached on that 4th and 1 and had the wrong personnel in the game. On the last, we went to prevent way too early. (It prevents you from winning.)
The second TD we (and arguably the refs) helped Troy down the field with penalties. That's inexcusable, but easily correctable.
I am not worried about our defense. If the offensive issues get solved, this defense will be just fine.

year went on, Syracuse, USC, UNC and then Alabama! PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM PREVENT AND KEEP THE BIG RUSHERS FRESH FOR FINAL QUARTER VENABLES! LAST YEAR YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT DEPTH, SHOULD NOT BE PROBLEM THIS YEAR. SLAM THE ### DOOR FOR A CHANGE!

On one if those drives Tankersly dropped a ball right in his hands, and on one drive there were two pass interference calls that were not PI.
There were two opportunities for the refs to call PI on Troy that were very obvious, one on the goal line, but they whiffed on those calls.
If I were Dabo I'd make sure that this crew never comes to the Valley again.
But 7 dropped passes is just inexcusable.
Go Tigers

Great article. Venables mentioned in his post-game interview that he played a ton of guys on D. I need to look at the tape, but that could have made a difference on Troy's last two scoring TDs late in the game.
The offense needs to be able to sustain drives and then our D will not be on the field for more than half of the game. We will be fine.
Go Tigers!

The difference is rushing three guys instead of playing your lights out defense. You let any quarterback have all day back there and they will eventually find someone open. Prevent d is no good!Same thing at Auburn. This lets teams back into games.

Amen to that - the prevent defense never seems to work. I would still like to see what personnel packages Venables had on the field during Troy's last two scoring drives. Will report back after I watch the game again later today.
