Need help. Gas bill seems outrageous

Curious what others Dominion Energy natural gas bill looks like. Just got mine and it's 345 bucks. This is for heat pump furnace and water heater only. Seems abnormally high to me. But we did have the ice storm snow deal. Also I'm in Charleston area 2000sqft home.

Does this seems crazy?

Can you educate us on any specific policies that would help support your assessment and how the surge in price is not due to supply/demand…increased exports, very cold winter, and lower inventories?

I'm not saying that republicans are bad folks, but they chose the wrong one as a leader for our country. He already has all of our friends and allies really p i s s e d at our country as a whole bc he knows so little about running a country that he has Musk on his hip to help him. IMO Musk didn't become one of the richest people in the world bc he looked out for our country!!!

I know, it has to be political. Probably has nothing to do with the fact that the demand for natural gas in January was usually high due to colder than normal weather across entire country. It’s obviously a conspiracy to drive up natural gas prices after the election for no reason.

Do you have backup heating for your heat pump?

I have gas backup for cold weather below 35’ish. So most of last month would have been on back up gas heat. That said we don’t know the size of your house or how energy efficient it is or where you set your thermostat. My house is more efficient than average and I spend less than $200 for a cold month. I have a friend who spends $800/ month on Lake Norman.

I have a 30,000 BTU gas heater in my den where my wife and I watch TV, and I have a 100-gallon tank that I have filled once every winter that will run out by the end of March. The gas heater helps by keeping my electric bill to about $280 to $300 a month, but the temp in my house during the winter months is never above 75° unless it heats up outside, and during the summer months the temp in my house is never cooler than 77°. When it's 90° plus outside, 77° for our old bones is just fine...

Natural gas prices aren't abnormally high right now, so it's probably just higher consumption due to cold weather or some other local issue. Maybe check with Dominion and see what they say. I guess a leak is also possible, but unlikely if everyone else is saying their bills are much higher than usual.

Yes, heat pumps are not made for the type of weather we had recently and more coming this week so they run constantly. That is why I still use my fireplace at night during extremely cold weather. I expect my next power bill to be $300 or less. 2,500 sq. ft. house. We only live downstairs now as the kids are grown and out of the house.

Mine was $351 in November in Greenville, after the NG-fed generator ran half of October (post Helene). My actual usage in Nov was $62. My equalized payment has jumped from $84 to $122 because of that one supersized bill. Hopefully we will get a respectable refund in the fall, the next time they equalize the payment.

2000 square feet is a good size home and I would suggest that if you have rooms in your home that are rarely used, I would put a vent cover over the vent/vents of those rooms and keep those doors closed and that would allow the space that you're using to heat up quicker and your thermostat will be satisfied quicker and keep your heat pump from running so much.

I have 1100 square foot home with 3 bedrooms and the vents stay closed off during the winter months and I noticed after we done that our electric bill was cheaper, but it does cost a lot just for heat in your home. IMO the summer months are cheaper...

Come latter March for about three months, the bill will plunge to under $100 monthly, as I cut off the furnace, and open all the windows and doors leading to a screened porch. When I'm away at work five days a week from about 8 to 7, the only thing running is the fridge, plus I tend to dine out on those days. I only start using the A/C when the night temps reach the 70's and never run it when away. My summer bills are always a good bit lower than the winter's.
