I go to that one frequently. Hope no one was there when it happened. Thoughts are with them. Hopefully they’ll bounce back.

He’s still on the shelves at the places where the “Maurice’s” label isn’t allowed, just under a different branding. Has been for years. Exact same recipe, address on the bottle goes to the Maurice’s offices/Piggy Park.

The difference in Maurice vs most "which to his credit "....Maurice stood on his beliefs and lost millions and millions of dollars doing so.
Where other went the route of making everyone feel welcome for financial gains even though they hated them too.

products because of his pro-slavery literature and his wanting to maintain segregated dining areas with blacks being served in the kitchen after the rest of the South was integrated.
His family, to their credit, took down the Confederate flags at Piggy Park, and put up an American flag.

That he was but has good BBQ sauce. Bessinger's is just as good and I believe he was Maurice's brother. Probably the same recipe.

Maurice has passed away several years ago. The patriarch thought one way but the rest of the family doesn’t. Still, it was an old business that supported a lot of people. They went home Saturday evening and now don’t have a place to go to work Monday morning. All of the meats and sides were cooked in those buildings which supplied their outlying stores.

of the biggest racist and profiteers off of racism you’ll ever meet. Be wary of those who scream certain things at the top of their lungs, for they are usually the very thing they rant against.

Down here in ATL we have had other restaurants go up in flames and it was not political or racial by any means. In fact, we recently had pool chemical plant go up in flames and cause all kinds of smoke and now people are suing with lawsuits for body harm inhalants and now they want the company to close its doors forever.

Maurice and Melvin are second generation BBQ restaurant owners and their sauces are very similar. Their father, “Big Joe” Bessinger started the business as Bessinger’s Piggy Park BBQ. Like many family owned businesses, the kids couldn’t get along so they split into Maurice’s and Melvin’s but the sauce was pretty much the same. Growing up in Charleston in the 60s and 70s, the Bessinger’s Big Joe sandwiches were some of the best around. The only competition IMO was a small, family owned business called Rast BBQ on Johns Island. Bessinger’s and Rast’s both made exceptional Lowcountry mustard based BBQ regardless of their political leanings.

It's too sweet for me. I make my own mustard sauce at home it's got much more vinegar and much less brown sugar.

My neighbor worked for Maurice some years ago. He managed the store on Elmwood. Maurice was a trick. He told me no one entered in the sauce "room" when the sauce was being made and the recipe was kept under lock and key and only could be accessed by family!
