Interesting comparison between Dabo and Steve; First 4 Years
Apr 12, 2013, 12:51 PM
|
|
Dabo: 2009-2012 Steve: 2005-2008 54 Games 50 Games 36-18 28-22 .667 Winning % .560 Winning % Points Scored 1751 1213 32.4 Points / Game 24.3 Points / Game Points Allowed 1263 1078 23.4 PPG 21.6 PPG 4 Bowl Games; 2 Wins 3 Bowl Games; 1 Win 3 Division Titles None 1 Championship None 1 BSC Bowl None
It’s very impressive that Dabo was better than Steve in every category except points allowed. However, that was only a 1.8 points per game difference. The best part is, we are in the beginning of a great run and USuC is at the end of their best ever run. Great days ahead!!! GO TIGERS!!!

come back and win after having a 28-14 lead in 2006. I know we won in '07 (barely) and crushed them in '08- but after that '06 loss I remember thinking, "That didn't feel like the usual South Carolina team."
I get the feeling their expectations changed after that '06 game as well.

You're right! Everyone is scared of SC St. Vandy, Troy and Kentucky. You know, for as tough as the elite (Bama, LSU, Florida) SEC teams are, the bottom sure has some stinkers!

What were the state of the programs?

Spurrier took over Florida following the Charlie Pell-Galen Hall years of cheating and probation when they had their only SEC title stripped.
Dabo took over a Clemson team that was a consistent 9 win team looking for an "oil change" to "get over the hump".

Here is a little cut and paste of what I'm talking about....
Apr 12, 2013, 3:39 PM
|
|
What Spurrier Faced Upon Becoming Florida HC:
Charley Pell was hired as Florida's new head football coach for 1979. Pell came from Clemson University, where he had led the Tigers to a 10-1 record and an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship in 1978. In 1982, Clemson's program was put on NCAA probation for rules violations that had begun under Pell's watch. This would prove prophetic. Charley Pell would help build the best teams Florida football history to that point, but at the price of scandal and severe NCAA sanctions.
Due to reports of serious recruiting and other NCAA rule violations committed by Pell and his staff, he resigned in August 1984 effective at the end of the season. But when the university received an official list of 107 alleged major infractions in mid-September, university president Marshall Criser fired Pell, effective immediately. Offensive coordinator Galen Hall, who had just arrived from Oklahoma and was not involved with the rule violations, was named interim head coach beginning with the fourth game of the season. Hall rallied his players after a 1–1–1 start to win eight straight games and a 9–1–1 record. The 1984 team was ineligible for a bowl game because of NCAA probation, and to the shock and dismay of the team and fans, the SEC university presidents voted to retroactively vacate the Gators' SEC championship in the spring of 1985.
Though they never had a losing season, Hall's subsequent teams did not match his early success, mainly due to severe scholarship penalties levied on the program.
Despite intermittent success, the Florida football program had never been considered a consistent national power, having never officially won a conference championship in eighty-three seasons of play. Things changed in 1990: Steve Spurrier returned to Gainesville as the Gators' Head Ball Coach. In the debut game of Spurrier's Gators, they blew past the Oklahoma State Cowboys 50–7. In their second game, they came from behind to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide 17–13 in Tuscaloosa. Since Spurrier's return in 1990, the Gators football team has been the winningest Division I (FBS) program.[2]
In Spurrier's first season, the Gators finished first in the SEC for the third time, but for the third time, they topped their conference during a season in which they were ineligible for the SEC title due to NCAA probation. They won their first official SEC championship in 1991, fifty-nine seasons after joining the SEC as a charter member. The Gators played for the conference championship in the first-ever SEC Championship Game in 1992, but lost 28–21 to the eventual national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. Spurrier's Gators rebounded, however, and won the next four SEC Championship Games (1993–1996).
What Dabo Faced Upon Becoming Clemson HC:
During Bowden's tenure, the Tigers were bowl eligible every season but didn't win any ACC championships.
The 2000 Tigers started 8–0 and rose as high as #5 in the polls before losing three of their last four. The same thing happened during the 2006 season following a 7–1 start and with the team on the verge of winning the ACC Atlantic Division. The Tigers have also shown great resolve at points during Bowden's tenure. The 2003 team won four games at the end of the season to finish 9–4, which included victories over #3 Florida State and #7 Tennessee in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. The 2004 season saw the Tigers start 1–4 only to win five of their last six games (which included an overtime upset of #10 Miami), while the 2005 team overcame a 2–3 start to finish the season 9–4.
Tommy Bowden agreed to resign for $3.5 million on October 13, 2008, after leading the team to a disappointing 3–3 record (1–2 ACC) at the midpoint of a season in which the Tigers were an almost unanimous preseason pick to win their first ACC title under Bowden and were ranked #9 in the preseason polls. Assistant coach Dabo Swinney was named interim head coach.[

It's Spurrier's first four years at SC not FL...

The poster is comparing Dabo's first four years at Clemson to Spurrier's first four at Carolina. He's not looking at Spurrier's first four years at Florida or even counting Duke before that. So I have no idea why this Charlie Pell / Galen Hall stuff is relevant. If you want to make a comparison about where each started then you should point out how Spurrier followed Lou Holtz at Carolina and Dabo followed Tommy Bowden. Which of those two guys do you think is more highly regarded nationally? I know which one doesn't have any championship rings... and apparently so does any AD with a job opening in the last four years.

Sorry, I misunderstood.
However, my point in what I posted is that Spurrier made Florida what it is today, not the other way around.
Also, to that same end, Clemson made Dabo what he is today, not the other way around.

9 win seasons in 2000, 2003, 2007, no less than 8 wins a season for the three years prior to Dabo taking over for Tommy and consistently ranked pre and post season during the Bowden years.
Dabo inherited a great situation and I hope he will remember that if he is ever approached for another HC position, whether it's his alma mater or not.

by Wake Forest and was in disarray. If the situation were great Bowden would never have been let go. Conversely, Ball Sack inherited a program that was 6-5, just a few years removed from the 2 biggest bowl wins in school history. SCU was hardly the mess that Holtz inherited

do we however give any credit to our hated rival however as 2 of those were to the best SCU teams in their history? Bowden sure never faced an all-time great SCU team. As loathe as we are to admit, their program is better than it has ever been

You mean the 3-3 team that was preseason ranked number nine and a consensus pick to win the conference?
Lotsa folks on here were talking up a possible MNC that year.
The record may have been poor, but the talent was there.

In 4 full years Dabo has done what Bowden never could. And since when do preseason rankings mean a thing? I'd say that preseason number 9 was shown to be an absolute fraud after that fiasco of a night in the Georgia Dome against Bama. you gonna blame the WR coach for that, or the head guy?

Program building is a process and not an event.
Tommy Bowden took over for Tommy West. Are you going to argue that Tommy Bowden didn't have to rebuild?
Tommy always recruited well, had his teams ranked and was bowl eligible for a decade.
Between Tommy and Dabo, who took over the better situation?
As for the Bama game? I blame whoever promised Jamie Harper the first carry of the season? Who was Jamie Harper's recruiter? Dabo Swinney.

I'm sure Dabo did that without Bowden's blessing, right?
Apr 12, 2013, 5:16 PM

Bowden did that for every high level player he recruited. Justin Miller, James Davis. Bowden took over for West and the situation was bad. he took us to upper mediocrity, and that was as high as he got. No division championships. No conference championships. No 10 win seasons. No major bowls. Losing bowl record. In 9 years, he achieved nothing really other than a winning record overall and against SCU. Dabo has 3 division championships in 4 years(won or tied), 1 conference championship. A BCS bowl birth. 2, 10 win seasons. And riddle me this, was the situation Spurrier took over better than what Bowden inherited? In fact, it was not much different than from what Dabo inherited. A program that had risen to upper level mediocrity. 2, 9 win seasons in the previous 4 years and 2 big bowl wins(at least for them) in that same time period.
You can try all you like but their is no number other than our record against the chickens that Bowden outperformed Dabo. And those teams Bowden faced at SCU were nowhere close to the last 2 Dabo has faced there

Especially for our ignorant Coot Trolls:
Do you EVER HEAR the "Ole ball sack" say he is "All In" for USuCk?? Or that he is proud to be there, or that he coaches in a special place, great traditions, etc.??? NO!
Dabo?? All the above with CLEMSON on his sleeve and in his heart!!
THAT is your comparison!!!

Dabo has had a good first 4 years but you have to remember that the ACC has declined and Spurrier inherited a football program that only won 10 games once in a 100+ years of football *history. Plus Spurrier in his first 4 years played 2 national championship Florida teams, Georgia was still elite, Tennessee was in decline but still decent and Kentucky was the best they ever were in a long time with Andre Woodson at QB.

Tommy recruited fine even with those old pesky lockers. Tommy was shown the door because in 9 years he never won the big game, and in the year when he entered the season as a top ten team, he was embarrassed by Bama, then lost by 30 to Wake. The situation Dabo inherited wasn't horrible, but it sure wasn't great. Coaches don't get canned if the situation is great

Lost by 30 to wake in 2008? No. Check again. It was low scoring. But It doesnt matter. Dabo has done well. With a lot of opportunities. A split division great facilities. My opinion is different. Terry don wanted him out I guess. Didn't let him finish the yr. but he is well and doing good. So . See ya.

Split division?
Apr 13, 2013, 11:03 AM
|
|
Bowden's last 3 years were in the division format. Bowden was the one who fought for the facility upgrades, and the plans were in place to do them WHEN he was here. He simply did not win enough to keep his job. I liked, and like Tommy. Supported him. But he could not get over the hump in spite of 9 years worth of opportunities. He wasn't given the opportunity to finish the year because in the year where he had built expectations to their highest, they fell on their face. He'd escaped losing his job several times, but finally, enough was enough. If TDP didn't want him there, he never extends him twice. That's just BS coming from you. The fan base was in mutiny mode as they were fed up with mediocrity so the admin had to act

Ok bud. Don't get your panties in a wad. Tommy had ab three tries to win the division not nine and no facilities. Who knows if he would won that year or not? Spiller was hurt. I think terry don was a bad AD. My opinion. U have yours. Dabo was given a lot of advantages and has done well. Tommy is fine too. I think it's good terry don is out.
