Did Blake Wright, or another player, have to tell the third base umpire that they were planning a hidden ball trick?

I am guessing not since Blake showed the ball right before he tagged the guy out. So, the ump knew Blake had the ball when he tagged the player. But, it would have been called a balk had Darden toed the rubber before the trick was pulled.

The umpires are not made aware a hidden ball trick is in the works. You are correct the pitcher is not allowed on the rubber without the ball. You'll see the first thing Blake does after the tag is look at the umpire to make sure he saw it, there have been times where the ump is not paying attention and they have to have a meeting to see if any other ump saw the tag

If you notice, everyone except Blake , meaning the umpire, runner and 3rd base coach were standing around scratching their nuts instead of paying attention.
