I still say that in this new CFP era Clemson can't

Be scheduling their first game of the year or any game of the year for that matter against a top 5 SEC team in the country anymore. We have one our out of conference games already against an SEC team in South Carolina every year. That is good enough. We should schedule a cake walk game just like many teams ranked higher than us did. If we didn't have the loss to GA and our record was 9-1 right now we would be ranked similar to Notre Dame (6) at best, Miami, Boise State, SMU, BYU (14) at worst. In my opinion we would probably be ranked around #10. For crying out loud we were ranked #11 win we played Louisville. That's with the loss to GA. Notre Dame had a loss to a team much worse than Louisville (N. Illinois). Their signature win this year is against a worsening Texas A&M team. We dropped in ranking from #11 to #23 in one week. What if we were ranked #5 when we lost to Louisville? We probably would have dropped to #12 or #13. Then we win out and go to the ACC Championship game at 11 - 1 if we win the tie-breaker. Even if Clemson doesn't win the tie-breaker and doesn't go to or win the ACC Championship game, I don't believe the CFP is going to leave out an 11- 1 Clemson team with our CFP history..........So, STOP scheduling Top 5 SEC powerhouse teams the first game of the season. In this 12 team playoff era you don't need a game like that or win like that to make it in. A one loss Clemson team will get in every year. I know, I know, you're going to say it was the Louisville loss that caused us to be left out of the playoff. Not so much the GA loss. But think about it both Deshaun and Trevor had years where they had 1 ACC loss (Pittsburg & Syracuse) and we still made it to the playoff. And that was with only 4 teams getting selected. Back then you needed to have a better strength of schedule because there were only 4 teams. But now look at this year with 12 teams how many teams in the top 15 above us right now have weak schedules. See the teams listed above. NUFF SAID!!

I disagree... the way it used to be there was no incentive to play tough out of conference games b/c all that mattered was your record.

With 12 teams now, I don't think you take as big of a hit and it drastically improves your SOS.

I disagree. You need strength of schedule less in this 12 team playoff era. At least in the ACC where only two teams are going to make it most years. But yes, in the SEC when so many teams are going to have the same records, like 2 or 3 losses (supposedly from beating up on each other) then it's going to matter. Let's face it there is big time Bias in college football. An ACC with two losses is not getting in the CFP unless that second loss is in the ACC championship game. Just look at all the teams ranked above us. Their strength of schedules are weak. As I mentioned before, Miami, Boise State, BYU, SMU, Colorado, Notre Dame. They didn't have to play GA to be ranked above us. The only thing strength of schedule does for a team like Clemson would be if they get in the top 4 they get a bye week. If we beat GA and only have the one loss to Louisville at the end of the regular season, 11-1. And win the ACC Championship then we would be top 4. Yes, if we were undefeated in conference play that would be ideal. But how often is that going to happen? So, don't make it any more difficult than it already is by scheduling a game against one of the best team in the country anymore. Those days are over. We can't afford the loss. The payoff is not worth the risk..... I just ask you to go look at those teams schedule mentioned above. You'll see what I mean.

I like playing strong teams, but not game 1. Too many kinks to work out. Let’s get a game under our belts first.

If only one ACC teams gonna make the playoffs there's no SOS benefit of playing good out of conference teams any more. These schedules were made when SOS was important for us since a top 4 spot wasn't guaranteed but now it is and since we aren't getting any at large bids any more it just creates a negative perception for no reason if we go out and lay an egg.

If we’re not good enough to play the big dogs, why even consider the CFP. Just lay on the porch with the other little puppies and watch.

You're starting to sound like Brian on YouTube (Clemson Football Live) former Bobby Derkins. Listen to yourself. If we can't be in the top 4 we shouldn't be in it at all?? You never know what can happen. We could catch fire at the right time. We could stop having 4 dropped passes, untimely penalties, blown assignments, etc... and win the thing. We would have an advantage of CFP experience.

I would rather play the Big Dogs in the Playoffs, win or lose. Than not making it to the playoffs.

I don't like playing big dogs for openers. A good team? That's fine but not a top 10 team.

We’ve got enough cream puffs on our schedule already, which usually includes Carolina. Let’s not shy away from playing good out of conference teams.
We can always get to the playoffs by winning the ACC, which we should be able to do regularly.
Make the regular season great again.

Scheduling a decent out of conference team is a bit different than scheduling Georgia or even LSU some years. I'd have no problem with mid tier P4 team but there's only downside playing those guys. Winning won't matter if we don't win the ACC and losing just reinforces the narrative that we can't compete any more. If people honestly think the ACCs gonna be sending multiple teams to the playoffs most years they haven't been paying attention. Going forward we either win the ACC or we go bowling.

I like and agree with your response. But I do think two ACC teams can get in most years. If we didn't play GA and lose we would be ranked around #11 or #12 right now. That's 3 ACC teams at 9-1. If that holds till the end of the regular season it would be three ACC teams with 11-1 records. How far would all 3 ACC teams move up in ranking if they go undefeated the next two games? My guess is two of those teams get in the CFP most years. Especially if it was Clemson and Miami. Or Clemson and Florida State. Or Miami and Florida State. Because of their recognition. I think with SMU's weak schedule and their lack of acknowledgement this year they would have to win the ACC championship game to make it in.

NCTigerfan? Exactly. So we need to schedule a team we can beat 99% of the time. Since a mid tier P4 team doesn't help much, why take the chance? Just like N. Illinois beat Notre Dame. Vanderbilt beat Bama. Kansas beat BYU. These mid tier teams can have a lucky day. I prefer to do like Alabama does their first game of the year: Western Kentucky. Their two other out of conference games: South Florida and Mercer.

Have you looked at SMU and Miami's schedule? SMU is undefeated in the ACC. There only loss being an out of conference game against BYU ( a good team but not GA) who is overrated and just got their first loss. Because their schedule is really weak they were ranked higher than us because of being undefeated. You don't need a strong schedule anymore is what I'm saying. If you can't see it, that's ok. If you haven't noticed we are not winning the ACC regularly anymore. Even with only one loss in conference we are on the outside looking in in hopes of other teams losing. I'm saying if we don't have the loss to GA and replace that with a win against a lesser team we are still in the playoffs without an ACC title. Get it?

SMU could be argued either way. They have one loss, which is to an out of conference ranked opponent. Buy Is no Georgia, but a quality opponent nonetheless.

Had SMU scheduled a cupcake that week (week 3), they would likely be undefeated and a cinch for the CFP whether they win the conference championship game or not (assuming they beatUVA and Cal). They did schedule two cupcakes to open the season, but now, with the one loss to #14 BYU, the consensus is that they need to run the table to make the CFP. Solid argument for not scheduling ranked OOC opponents. (Question: Is BYU a rivalry game for them?)

On the other hand, if they had played a cupcake and were undefeated, and stayed undefeated and lost the ACCCG, the arguments would be that they played no one and had a loss in their only game against an opponent with a pulse (and most recent outing). Would a 1-loss non-conference champ get in over a 2, or even 3, loss Big Two school? I know they have no control over their ACC slate, but it was pretty easy.

It wasn't the Georgia game that hurt Clemson's current ranking. The Tigers were 2 TD dogs to the Dawgs. The way Clemson lost at home to Louisville is what you can thank for the current ranking.
