but I would encourage us to try to remain positive as there are a lot of reasons for optimism.

We have some really nice young talent on our team, and we will be successful in the portal again this year as well. I also like our recruiting class coming in.

We will be back in the NCAAs again in 2026. Go Tigers!

Being honest...

Clemson gave Dabo his last raise based on the fact that he won it all and has proven he can get onto the national stage in the playoffs consistently. When it was time to hire a new baseball coach, Clemson went and got someone with the "potential" to make it to the CWS consistently and bring home a natty. (Clearly still at work in baseball.) Is that what they did when they hired Brad or gave him his contract extensions? Does he have the ability to bring home a natty? And if your answer is no then that tells you where Neff's expectations are in basketball. If you want deep runs consistently you have to have a coach that can get you there consistently, and imho that's not Brad. He's good for a couple of tournament wins every 4 to 6 years, but he's not going to get us to the biggest stage. If that is what we want (I do) we have to find the right guy. Just my opinion...

And now we are moving on to the gas lighting.

I really like Brownell and I want him to remain our coach, it’s the first sustainable basketball program in my life. But it is duplicitous to compare a single season recap like that when the metrics are apples and oranges. Winning percentages for elite basketball coaches is much higher that elite football coaches and there are way more opportunities for postseason play, for example there were more SEC teams in march madness than there were teams in the cfp.

Your constant gaslighting does more to frustrate program support than foster it. Maybe it’s time for a new approach?

If Brad can get us to NCAA next year then I will give him major props because losing talent he is losing, not great bench and playing in a weak ACC, CBB has major hurdles. Hope he takes us there again but I couldn't buy the stock right now.

I love Clemson sports and went to school when Moose Campbell was there and played in the Pep Band. The ACC ruled college hoops at that time but this is a different age and the conference has failed to get a seat at the big boys table in the recent ESecPN remake of college sports. It is all about the money now driven by people tuning in. I will forever hope that Clemson will win an ACC/NCAA/NIT tournament at some time but at 65 years old it may never occur in my life time.

A better question is why you need to compare basketball and football, especially when football has 3 natties, many conf championships, made the playoffs (before it grew) multiple times, beat the big dogs (bama, Ohio state) multiple times.

He has far and away the most advantages of any football coach in the ACC. Unfortunately he has allowed the program to slip and we have been pretty bad when playing no conference games against power conferences lately. That’s unacceptable given our investment in football at Clemson, no matter how much Dabo dominates an ACC filled mostly filled with teams that care a lot less than we do about football.

As you know, that’s not the case with ACC basketball, nor does Clemson basketball have anywhere close to the advantages or support Clemson football does. Trying to equate the two situations is ludicrous.

As for Brownell, we did fall short against McNeese. We should not have lost, period. But we lost by 2, which was the closest margin in the first round. Some of you are focusing on the first half as if that is the only part of the game that counted. That's weird.

And in the case of football, we didn't just barely lose, we lost by a significant margin. Plus we didn't have the season winning percentage we had in basketball.

The point is, most people here are optimistic about football but are negative about basketball, despite football underachieving the last few years and basketball overachieving, as well as our basketball team winning a higher percentage of its games recently. Fantastic logic there.

If Matt Painter can survive his criticism at Purdue than Brownell can as well. Painter lost to a 16 seed but came back the next year and made the Final 4.

Clemson's loss to McNeese was one of the worst performances in the NCAA tournament ever. It was historically horrendous, setting a record for least amount of points in a half.

Maybe it isn't Brownell's fault but if his team doesn't do something to erase the memory of this embarrassment, he'll never live this down.

Technically, one loss shouldn't take away from entire season's success. But, at this level and in the eyes of many, it's hard to see past the dissapointment. That's just the way it is.

What we want is consistency. What we have is consistent underachievement. Sans one three game win streak last March/April. We have 16 seasons that ended in frustration except maybe two. Two final top 25 rankings, one elite 8 run, and one sweet sixteen run out of 16 seasons isnt consistency. Well, it is but it’s he opposite spectrum we seek.

I agree that we have probably the best pool of talent we’ve ever had. Especially with Zachary coming back (his waiver is a shoe in). We have to find an Uber talented center and an assassin guard that can take over a game. Granted, Del can be that guy if he gets the playing time.

My concern is the lack of consistently being ready to play the big games. There are times when we seem ready to beat anyone. There are also times we couldn’t hit water if we fell out of a boat. Brownell seems to lack the timing or ability to use strategic timeouts to change a games flow. It’s like he accepts what’s happening and is afraid to make wholesale changes. He also seems to put weird combos of players on the floor when the previous five are red hot. Or scared to go deep into the bench to try to shake things up.

I don’t pretend to know everything wrong with he program but I’m positive Brownell isn’t the guy. He’s had 16 years. It’s been 16 years of pretty good to bad. I want Dook consistency. Dean Smith consistency. That’s not too much to ask. We have the money.

If the Brad can seriously turn it around, I am ok with that too. He’s run out of “one more year to figure it out” about 8-10 years ago. He has to show last year wasnt the outlier it appears to be. Sure, this regular season was great but the ACC was a hot dumpster fire. Louisville and Clemson showed that in the tourney. The SEC is getting a cold dose of reality as well after being dominated in the first two rounds. Both leagues have a long way to go to be the premiere league.

Three consecutive 20+ win seasons, three seasons among the best teams in the ACC, and three seasons with some high quality wins.

I don't know what you expect, but the level of consistency we have had recently is unprecedented in men's basketball here.

I agree that this year's loss in the first round to McNeese State was very disappointing, but it doesn't undo the historic season we had with program records for overall wins and ACC wins.

Peaking at the wrong time then skidding into the ACC tourney and getting bounced in the first round of the NCAA is pretty much what most of us have come to expect of the basketball program.

This expectation is probably rooted in the experience gleaned from all those seasons when the team never peaked to begin with, got bounced in the first round of the ACC, then lost to Wichita State at home in the NIT.

I don’t think proficiency in the portal by itself is enough to move the program forward. If you allow that Coach B is at that point (though I’m not convinced he’s exactly knocking it out of the park in that department consistently), I still don’t see the player development and coaching to elevate the program beyond its historical mediocrity.

With this latest postseason exclamation point, it’s difficult to see a positive trajectory.

It is completely understandable that folks are frustrated. You cant blame them, this was our best team ever in an ACC that has never been weaker.

Brad has never won more than 1 game in the ACC Tournament.
Brad has only won more than 1 game in the post-season 3 times, 2014 NIT, 2018 NCAA and 2024 NCAA

That doesn't seem like there is much there to foster a belief that he knows what it takes to get in done in the post-season, even as much as we want to believe. Yes I know "Elite 8", but that is looking like the exception at this point. We should be pointing to the "rule" not the exception.

Regular season stats are great, they get us to the post-season. As a fan I want more, I think we deserve more and I think the AD has given plenty of support to get us that success. Its time for Brad to deliver on that.

making it to the NCAAs is to WIN and ADVANCE. Teams/Schools like Clemson should not be content with just making it to the dance. We should want to at least get to the Sweet 16. And in the ACCs, we should have the goal of making it to the final, for a change.

Making it to the NCAAs is nice, but 68 schools do that, so the bar isn't super high. Let's actually WIN some and make some progress and not reward a coach for "potential" - would actually like to see some RESULTS rewarded for a change.

And my question is valid - why is our goal merely to make the tournament? Something that 68 teams can currently do? Why is our goal not higher? Why are we content merely to make the tournament?

Everyone knows that you're not always going to meet your goal in sports. But if you don't set the goal, you sure won't meet it. If you're content with what I'd call mediocrity - merely making the tournament - then where's that push to go farther and be better?

That's not too undifferent from saying that football is happy to make a bowl game. Everyone knows our goal with football is a conference championship and subsequently the playoffs. I think softball and baseball would say that their goal is to contend for a conference title and make the CWS - not merely the NCAA tourney. Why is basketball the only sport that seems content to just "be there" and not excel there?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our goal has been to make the tournament since it hasn't been done much

at Clemson.

Making the tournament two years in a row has only happened twice in program history, in the mid-late 90s and in the mid-late 00s. So step one is making it more consistently.

Step two is obviously to win some games and advance. That was our goal this year and we did not do it.

Who said that we should be okay just making the tournament? No one involved with our program has said that.

I would push back against the notion that making the tournament is mediocrity. You have to be much better than mediocre to get an at-large bid.

We have shown over the last few years that we are one of the best ACC teams, so the goal is to compete for an ACC championship as well.

While competing for an ACC championship, making the NCAA Tournament every year, and ideally winning some games there are goals, I do not think we are to the point of those being expectations. Therefore, this year should not be viewed as a disappointing one, although the last game certainly was.
