Thanks to the 'Commander In Chief' of the armed forces -- President Trump.

I as ROTC for two years at Clemson (required back then).

When Hippies were putting out some of my favorite tunes, and cowards were running to Canada to escape serving 18 months for the USA, I volunteered for 4 years.

I was sent to Ft Bragg which was named after a General who had served in the USA Army and the CSA Army.
There was no heat or air in the old WW11 barracks then. Ventilation was achieved by keeping all windows on one wall up from the bottom, opposite wall all windows down from the top. That was mandatory. I believe it was to hold down contagious diseases like hepatitis that we might arrive with.
I was there in Jan-Feb and it got darn cold at night. Overall, it was a lot of fun.

I am a fan of FT BRAGG and all the soldiers who have/are/will serve there.

follow my 24 year old brother by serving in the military.

I don't believe that President Trump was a draft dodger

Times were different then.
Rich folks like George Bush served but got in the Guard.
Clinton went to England (Oxford).
Things like that are true in all walks of our life. Those special guys are the exception, maybe wrong, but it has no impact on the "need". Clay refused, Elvis did not.

Kids in college were not drafted. Married men were not drafted. Women were not drafted.
It was not like WW11 where one was in for the duration - just 18 months.
I personally know and served with many guys who were drafted. 99% are proud to have served. The education gained there for life ahead is invaluable.

The real truth is the draft is necessary for any country at war. One can say war is not necessary, but if in one, draft is necessary.
That can not be regulated by "if one agrees or not" with the current need for soldiers.

Tug, spent summer of 81 between junior and senior yr at Bragg as part of ROTC training. Must have been same barracks. On June nights, literally took a cold shower, then fell in bunk without drying off in attempt to get to sleep. Some July nights I could actually sleep under blanket though...go figure.

By the way, super impressed by 82nd personnel that trained us...some E -5's even we're college grads that could have been anything.

a traitor. Perhaps looking back to the Civil War from 2025 it is easy to put labels on those brave Soldiers. I can't imagine having to live through that period of American history. The majority of fighting age males from the South joined the CSA or converted from the US Army to fight. Not taking sides here, but this is a complex issue that deserves more than a single word label. Many Americans lost their lives during the Civil War. All should be respected. You don't have to like it, but it is ignorant to call any Soldier a traitor for serving.

I can say if you have never served in the military and have not served in a combat zone, you are not speaking from a position of authority or understanding.

Without searching through some of my books or hitting the Googles, I'm pretty sure all Confederate Soldiers were pardoned by President Lincoln and are not traitors to the USA.

War is not pretty. It makes people afraid-I've never met anyone who wants to die. I don't condone dodging the draft, but understand why people did.

I don't blame the regular folks who were conscripted and forced to fight for an evil and un-American cause, but Bragg should have been hanged after the war along with the rest of the Confederate leadership.

The failure of post-war Reconstruction is one of the biggest mistakes in American history. It led to men like Ben Tillman gaining power and using it to subvert democracy and lead a campaign of terror and mass murder against black South Carolinians.

Very well said. My Confederate great grandfather even tried to sign up for the army in WW II at the young age of 92. The recruiter said "we will call you if we need you".

The Civil War is only complicated to those who defend the CSA’s succession and fight for slavery, both now seen clearly as despicable acts. The Daughters of the Confederacy’s attempt to whitewash CSA history with statues honoring those soldiers has also been exposed for what it is; an attempt to cover up treason and legalized human bondage.

This argument always puzzles me. Most people act in accordance to the time frame for which they live. Only when conceptualize in modern history history in do we truly understand the impact of those decisions. Italians, Germans, and Japanese all overwhelmingly supported morally and ethically bankrupt causes during the 1930's and 40's. History has unquestionably shown this to be true. The United States civil war is often viewed through a different lense, regardless of the historical ramifications. Arguably, the civil war is the first conflict where the losing side lost the war but won the right to determine its historical perspective. The loyalty to one's state WAS stronger to ones loyalty to the union as a whole, this is true, however in a historical context that does not make it correct. As a Clemson alumnus, ROTC cadet, and current serving officer my oath was taken not to a state or a political ideology but to support and defend the constitution of the United States. Historical reflection matters. Did our ancestors (mine included) act in accordance to the time period to which they belonged? Sure. Does that excuse them of their actions? No, it does not. Truly great leaders are looked upon fondly because their actions transcend time and are equally valued as much today as in their own lifetimes. The actions of men such as John C. Calhoun, Robert E Lee or Braxton Bragg should continue to be taught and studied. However, to memoralize them as transcendent leaders would be the wrong course of action.

Fair point. Let's go deeper though. Name another base we have named after a leader of an opposition force. Name another base we have named after one of our own who lost most of the battles they led? How about Benedict Arnold? He was a 2 star in the continental army. My point, nobody is healing from the Civil War anymore. More so, what achievements as a warrior did Braxton Bragg achieve that warranted such an honor? Taking the matter even further why is Nathan Bedford Forrest memoralized in the Tennessee State House? Look up his history, it's even more troubling. Let's not erase history, but lets put it in context.

Lee chose to fight for white supremacy and slavery. He betrayed the principles of freedom and equality upon which the US was founded. Confederate leaders like VP Alexander Stephens made it clear why they seceded:

"Our new government['s]...foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

You need to brush up a little on history. I am not one to argue that slavery wasn't the cause of the Civil War, but even that has to be be put into perspective. Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery into new territories and was not against it in territories where it existed. You also may not know that the Emancipation Proclamation was only for those slave holding states that were part of the rebellion.

When I was courted to re-enlist they finally gave me a date to do that, but too late as I was in love and needed to go home.

Several of us in the NCO School at Benning decided to sign up together. If we had any cowardly side to us, it was that we delayed going to Vietnam , that was one more month that more VC would be taken out who could have potentially done the same to us. Sure enough- the Army Times(?) published KIA soldiers in each issue and we saw some guys who trained with us names on the list that didn’t make it through that one month.

Folks posting on this thread with "authority" have no clue.
Their friends and family were not listed in the daily count as our friends and family died.

58,220 is the official count of "killed" but expand that many times to those who were injured for life. Years later many died early due to things like agent orange.
War is hell, and it is the kids who are called on to go to battle.

Teenagers in my day were scared sh-less of being drafted, and for good reason.

If you weren’t, a few of my “50 years ago” posts are still easy to find in my profile page as Posts of the Day or HOF. Others are still in my archived posts if you can go back that far

Wish a real Commander in Chief would do the same with Ft.HOOD...as a new 2nd lt from Clemson served my country well from Ft. Hood...not fort Cheerios or whatever...that's what happens when you put wammabee Marxist and another group of passport patriots in charge of the military...surprised they did not change Washington DC into Clinton AC/DC!

I’m glad the woke decisions are one by one getting reversed. A name is a name and history is history.

Yeah, it'll always be the Gulf of Mexico no matter what Trump says. A name is a name and history is history.

Should we not teach history as it occurred, not as we wish it to be?
Braxton Bragg was a confederate General Officer, but his accomplishments due not warrant the naming of a military installation. His record as a leader of troops was horrendous. If we're going to teach history let us teach all of it. Let's not pretend that Gen. Bragg received the honor for his stupendous war record. Let's recognize the fact that his name was chosen as an appeasement to the southern state of North Carolina and not to a transcendent American leader. History is multifaceted, the confederacy lost the war but for whatever reason has won the battle for its historical perspective. The United States military didnt defeat Mexico in the spanish-American war and then name a base after Gen. Santa-Anna. We didn't defeat Rommel in North Africa and proceed to name a base after him. We didn't name a base after Saddam Hussein after we toppled his regime. This is a culture war battle, renaming bases in a back handed compliment to a WW2 private who until 4 days ago was unknown doesn't make our fighting forces stronger. Audie Murphy, Chuck Yeager, Bud Anderson or any other heroes would've been better choices...but alas, they don't share the same name as a has been, but never great confederate general.

Who knew one person could change fort names? Seems kinda counterintuitive that on one hand we have a rich clown cutting, cutting, cutting spending and on the other have no regard for the costs of stupid decisions like changing the names of military posts. Oh well, maybe that makes sense to the 48.9 % who voted for this. Enjoy.

What about the clown that approved changing it from Bragg to Liberty? I didn’t hear you complain about that stupid @ss clown wasting money on that one or all the other posts he had renamed. How much did he spend changing the name of all of those posts?

What about all the money your clown wasted on pushing EVs. We are not ready for those yet. We are already having power shortages as is. Our power grid cannot support it at this time. Oh, and when we have natural disasters like Helene, how the heyall are we gonna charge our cars so we can get around? Not much forward thinking by your clown and his sidekicks. Just one of many instances where your clown wasted money.

Over half the country voted for a common sense President.

He literally won the electoral college AND the popular vote.

Wonderful memories of Ft Bragg in 1966-67 prior to a trip to RVN. Love the 82nd AB Animal Club after a tuff day training. Hated to see the name changed to Fort Liberty. Glad to see it changed back to Bragg.

Now they will just have to find another famous Lee to re-name Washington Lee University to Washington Lee University. Thank goodness it is a private institution or I am sure that would have already been done.
