Coach Realizing 3-star; Better than 5-star! **Video**

Some of you may have seen this already. In fact, it may have been posted on TNET before.

But, this video is so true with H.S. recruiting. And, why the people who put "All their stock into recruiting classes as fans" will never get it.

No star rating calculates "work ethic and grit and stick-to-it-ness"!

Our current situation at Clemson that most resembles this: Zaire Patterson came in as a highly sought after 4-star recruit and is a RS Junior. Meanwhile, Jaheim Lawson came in as a 3-star from D.W. Daniel. Many thought it was a friends and family deal; but "not so fast"!

Who is seeing the field more and making more plays?
The list of 2 and 3-star players for Clemson during the Dabo years is long and prestigious. We didn't have top 5 classes in recruiting in any of our National Championships. Yet, when we lose a player, some of ya'll act like the world is coming to an end. Dabo has an eye for talented overlooked players. I trust him to bring in playmakers who were likely under evaluated.

Apparently, there is a whole series of these videos.

Every coach in major college football...

... has true stories like that.

As a Nole, here is quick story that is my favorite.

Warrick Dunn was a relatively lightly recruited player out of LA. QB in HS. Slotted to play DB at FSU. During an early practice he was playing TB for the scout team against the #1s on D. Took a toss sweep made it to the edge, turned upfield and outran the DB to the endzone.

Mickey Andrews walked over to Bobby Bowden and said, "I'll never see him on defense again, will I?" Bobby replied, "You got that right."

I'm sure Dabo has a similar story about Hunter Renfrow.

Mackensie Alexander was the one who first realized Hunter was a stud. As our #1 CB Hunter was giving him all he could handle on the practice squad. Alexander said early on he knew Hunter would be a starter.

My favorite 2-star Hunter Renfrow moment was against the all everything 5-star for a National Championship. Mackensie Alexander was just the 1st to get that H.R. work; but not the last.

Didn't know that about Warrick Dunn.

Never cared much for FSU: but for some reason I always like Dunn and Peter Warrick(may have his name spelled wrong).

Dunn was going to be a DB? Wow!

Levon Kirkland was a 3 star at best, and one of the last we took his year. Was a beast at DE for us, and ultimately an All-pro LB for the Steelers.

Levon Kirkland is from Lamar, SC.
I am old enough to have vaguely having remembered him play in H.S. and mand; he was an absolute beast.

It makes sense that Kirkland was only a 3-star "at the time" as he was from a small school. Many kids from small towns went pretty-much unseen in small South and North Carolina towns. Many of those kids couldn't go camping during the Summer; because they had to work.

Clemson's history with 3-star athletes making it to the NFL is impressive:

Levon Kirkland - 3-star
Hunter Renfrow - 2-star
Grady Jarrett - 2-star
K'von Wallace - 3-star
Baylon Spector - 3-star
Isiah Simmons - 3-star
Travis Etienne - 3-star(Rivals)
Cordrea Tankersley - 3-star
Tanner Muse - 3-star
Jordan McFadden - 3-star
Vic Beasley - 3-star ( came in as a Tight End ).
Tremayne Anchrum
And, I know I am missing some who had 3 or less years in the league. But, were still good enough players to have made it.

Renfrow aside, the best walk on I remember was David Treadwell. Walked on in 84, but we had Igwebuike that year. Then beats Georgia on last second field goals two years in a row.

Wow!
I never realized Treadwell walked on. My goodness he was good.

You wonder how a player that good ended up having to walk on though?

I knew Treadwell very well. I helped him in Electrical Engineering classes- we were the same year. Ford had asked tryouts. David was a soccer player. Tried it on a whim. I don’t think he even kicked in high school. He was VERY accurate.
