Dabo is the Last Soldier of traditional college football

I don't like it any better than you do, and I deeply wish it wasn't the case.

But the reality is the era of coaches being the feared unquestioned unchallenged authority once a Grant in Aid is signed is long gone. Two a days are gone. Gritting it out in the dirt and heat at the coach's whim is gone. Players are entitled, expectant, empowered and will turn on a program in a heartbeat. Coaches have lost the locker room. They are the ones who now come hat in hand.

NIL and the portal basically happened overnight, moved the goalposts over night and caught Dabo off guard. The game we've so loved for two and three generations changed instantly at the stroke of a California judges pen.

The FSU/Clemson game is going to serve as a proxy battle for NIL/portal vs non-NIL/portal. Regrettably, I don't think we are going to like the results.

As Trevor Matich said "cash is going to matter to recruits moving forward more than anything else".

Come Sept 23rd, it's likely going to be all over but the shouting.

As I recall, it was former Clemson Player Martin Jenkins

that that got the ball rolling here, and ironically it is his former coach who refuses to adapt.

Wish we were in a position to tell all of college football, we’re going to kickoff at 1:00. If you want to put us on tv then OK.

Love Dabo!

And everything he has done for Clemson, but if he chooses to die on the NIL/Portal hill then so be it.

Clemson football will change gears and move forward. GO TIGERS!!!!

There is no plan B for Dabo not using the portal to anyone’s liking. His buyout is not something that will be remotely entertained in the next 5-6 years. We won’t entertain terminating a mediocre basketball coach over a few million dollars. Dabo’s buyout is over $60 million, doesn’t significantly go down for 6 years, and he just got an extension last year.

I don't follow this comment. Duke had a number of transfers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not 4 and 5 star transfers..our guys were out coached,

6

Sep 15, 2023, 2:43 PM

out conditioned, outsmarted, and out driven. It had nothing to do with transfers or NIL and everything to do with coaching.

Re: Not 4 and 5 star transfers..our guys were out coached,

Both are fundamental problems and play a part. Duke brought back a lot of players from last year, but augmented their roster with some nice transfers that contributed in game 1. What a novel concept.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree about the coaching but not sure on

Sep 15, 2023, 3:38 PM [ in reply to Not 4 and 5 star transfers..our guys were out coached, ]

conditioning, lack of drive, etc...dont think that's the case.

While signing a free agent helps here and there, we have ALOT of really talented guys and probably more than anyone we play except maybe FSU...and ND? We are probably the same.

We do have a 5 star QB and a 5 star RB and highly recruited WRs...I agree coaching is part of the issue

Difference in QB experience between the two teams seemed to be the biggest factor IMO. Give it time, Cade will get there.

NIL and the Tranfer Portal

3

Sep 15, 2023, 3:06 PM

did not happen overnight. The portal has been around since 2018, and NIL has been a topic of discussion for years, from the video games to player doing autograph signings and appearances. Regardless of this, these topics have been on the table for years. Everyone knows paying players is only a matter of time.

Dabo is not a martyr because he chooses not to use the portal or partake in NIL. The field general is a thing of the past. Players do not respond to absolute authority anymore, nor should they. Coaches can inspire belief in other ways.

Look at Nick Saban, the greatest coach in the history of college football. For all of his complaining and griping, the man adapts to change better than anyone in football. When offenses shifted to spreads instead of power running, he created a better Tide offense. As NIL has risen in popularity, they founded their main collective in '22 and they've already paid out $3 mil, behind only Tenn and TAMU.

Dabo's refusal to adapt to the changing landscape will not strengthen his reputation or make the team better. We've seen his system work, no doubt. The man has two national championships and is an excellent recruiter, but I think the landscape is leaving him hehind. I think his recruiting style is good enough to make this team better than 90% of other college teams, but we won't be the pinnacle again.

caught off guard?!?!!!?.....seriously??

1

Sep 15, 2023, 3:42 PM

it didn't happen overnight. Dabo wasn't caught off guard, he was just too stubborn to change.

He'd rather prove his "holier than though" point to everybody while the game and other programs pass him by.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our recent struggles are not because of Dabos issues with the portal.

2
2

Sep 15, 2023, 4:00 PM

Nor are they because of NIL.

They are because Dabo made some poor decisions over the last few years when it came to coaching hires.

Our staff is significantly less experienced than our championship caliber teams. We don’t develop players nearly as well as we used to, nor do we put them in positions to excel as well.

That is why we have lost to less talented teams lately.

With that said, Dabo does need to use the portal and embrace NIL more. We won’t be elite again if he doesn’t. But our biggest issue is coaching.

We were an elite team that is only no longer elite because of coaching hires. But we only lose because our coaches aren’t any good. But also portal. Thanks for your well thought out observations.

Sep 16, 2023, 8:13 AM

I sincerely hope that he will change his philosophy and embrace the portal. I hope he'll get more active in getting NIL support for key recruits/transfers.

Right now, I'm afraid that he's like the best quality horse-drawn buggy maker watching Henry Ford cranking out Model T cars.

I'd like to be wrong, but look around.

Re: Dabo. I agree.

Sep 16, 2023, 9:03 AM

While I agree that he has said in the past he would only use the portal if we needed it to get better , this year there was no room in the inn. Our scholarships were all taken. And for anyone who says he hasn’t embraced NIL , we have a whole building dedicated to it and DJ had one of the biggest NIL deals with Dr Pepper. Our problem is coaching and mistakes with the football !
I still believe in this team and can’t wait until 8!! Go Tigers ?

I know Dabo doesn't like the portal but in order for Clemson to stay competitive unfortunately he's going to have to bite the bullet and use it. It's the future of college football I'm sad to say. Adapt and overcome Clemson adapt and overcome!
