dont understand capitalism or how free markets work….
In any job, you are given an opportunity to perform, and you are paid for what you have done, wand what your boss or the company thinks you will do in the future. Dabo started low, and EARNED his contract by performing…. He is being paid based on what he did, and by what the BOT believes he will do in the future… same goes for me, and anyone else…. We are paid for what we have done and continue to do….
If you underperform, making a salary that is not delivering the value the company feels is a fair return, you lose your job, or salary, or both.
The question for Neff and the BOT now becomes, what are the performance expectations and metrics they feel are best for Clemson, knowing what they pay Dabo…. We dont know those metrics and expectations, they do…. It’s their call, and its likely based on more than just W/L record in one year, etc…
Let them do their job, they evaluate and set goals, and they determine what to pay Dabo.. and yes, just like in business, most of what you earn is based on what you have done, and then it becomes a game of how long can you maintain that to meet the expectations of your organization…..
Doesn’t mean anyone hear needs to agree with it, but its not the fans call…. It’s how any business works…. We dont know the tolerance and expectation, or how they weight past versus current balance in performance….
I see nothing wrong with what Dabo makes and trust the institution and board to ensure Dabo is managed and producing to their expectations, over the long haul, not just one year…. If they ever believe he is not producing, I am sure they will make that call…..
I dont see it anytime soon, and I am glad, as I do believe Dabo can get this back to the top again…. Time will tell

Nice post. I'm sure the Tnet BOT and ADs will chime in soon.

The only complaint I have about his income is that he doesn’t give me any of it. He can’t spend all of it and I could help with that.

If Clemson wasn't paying Dabo, someone else certainly would be.***

Right. When I bought my first Clemson t-shirt from Walmart in 2015, I pretty much paid off Dabo’s salary for the rest of his career.

Are you sure Dabo gets paid from IPTAY?
I know about 2 or 3 % comes from the state. Not sure where the rest comes from.

Dabo Swinney has arguably been the best return on an investment

in the history of Clemson University, the City of Clemson, Seneca, Central, etc. I'm not a huge fan of all the changes around town that have occurred, but the amount of money that has been invested in infrastructure to accommodate fans, increasing student enrollment, and an increasing population is unbelievable. And I can guarantee you that the overwhelming majority of those investments are tied directly to the success of Clemson football.

The property tax base alone in the city of Clemson has increased over $1,000,000,000 since he took over. Nearly doubling. (Pulled from 2009 and 2022 City of Clemson budget reports). That says nothing about actual infrastructure investments, new construction, surrounding municipalities, or investments within the University itself. Athletic department growth, by percentage, has outpaced the ACC average by over 100%. It has also outpaced Alabama revenue growth, by percentage, by over 100% over that period (Knight Commission stats). People have lost their #### minds.

NOT coincidentally - that same time period basically applies to our beloved

coach Brownlee.
He absolutely gets credit for at least half of that growth.
Those 2,300 fans pouring into Littlejohn on a Tuesday night to watch us lose to Morehead State probably spend $25 each on supper and gas in and around Clemson while they are there.
Don't forget the unmistakable contribution of our other elite coaches !

Gimme a break. The same can be said of many towns in the upstate but it's because of all the transplants that are relocating here not because of Clemson football.

Yeah, it’s just transplants that don’t even realize we have a football team.

Has Clemson’s athletic department outgrown all the others in the ACC and Alabama’s - the most successful in the country over that stretch - by over 100% only because of transplants? How about you give us a ####### break. All that development in Easley and Pickens is just relocating that would be happening no matter what? New hotels. Refurbishments. It would all have happened no matter what. I’m not gonna pour over Millage rates for the city of Greenville for someone who probably won’t listen anyway. Just a simple examination of sold homes on Zillow shows that a $300k home in Clemson has appreciated 120% since 2014 whereas City of Greenville has been about 60%.

I don’t get how people don’t understand this unless they’re very very simple minded. There’s so much more to his contract then just wins and losses.

Coaches in top 5 of salary, can’t continue to be a 500 team. It won’t matter what they have done in the past.

Coaching salaries are artificially inflated because a fair percentage of revenue doesn’t trickle to its largest labor group (yet). But, relative to each other, coaching salaries are about as free market as they get.

Obscene college coach salaries are the result of anti-capitalism. Fans wanted better teams but rules existed barring payment to players, so fans put money in whatever else they could:
1. Obscene training facilities. 2. Obscene coach salaries. 3. No-show jobs for player family members. 4. Donations to things player family members are involved in, like the $can Newton dad's church stuff.
College coach salaries are a perversion of free market capitalism, not a result of it.
