Auburn's DBs vs. Clemson's WRs

May 4, 2012, 10:06 AM

This thought makes me feel good about our trip to Atlanta.

As I recall last year, we absolutely worked their small corners.

Am I right that they lost one corner (T'Sharvan Bell) and one safety (Neiko Thorpe) off last year's team?

Here's the depth chart from last year:

I know the "that's-great-but-will-Tajh-have-enough-time-to-throw-to-them" crowd will probably respond to this, but it still makes me smile to think of what Sammy and Nuk will do to their little DBs.

No team on our schedule has the DBs to hang with us

They can focus on Sammy all they want. It'll get them torched when Nuk shows how much he has improved, which is a scary thought.

Then you have:

Ford: Put on weight and ready for a breakout season
Brown: Mr. Clutch
Bryant: Learned the playbook and is insanely fast
Peake: He got his feet wet and is ready to show his skill
Humphries: Great Possesion WR and Chad likes him
Hopper: Speedy guy that will suprise a lot of people.
Cooper/McClain/Stekinger: All good TEs

We have far too much depth and speed at this position. Focus on one and get burned by another. Go to zone and just give us the flats and holes to exploit.

If the OL gels Auburn is in big trouble.

I'm most excited that AU lost their OC Malzahn, their premier RB Dyer, their DC (that might not be good as he sucked), and one of their QB's (Trotter - I think he started against us last year, but later lost the starting position). I don't see them scoring so quickly like they were capable of when Malzahn was there. If Boyd decides to throw the ball to OUR guys, then we'll be fine. We're loaded at WR.

I agree. It's going to be hard for any teams to stop our WR's. The scary part about the offense also is the fact that Andre Ellington can gash you up the gut if they start focusing too much on the receivers. I really hope he stays healthy this year, the guy is a player.

These are quotes from new Auburn DC, VanGorder.

At the defensive back positions, VanGorder said a lot more work has to be done there.

"There's so much communication going on there and there's so much involved there in respect to coverage," VanGorder said. "I think that's where you'll see the biggest difference from spring ball to fall ball, back there."

As for McNeal and Florence (starting Safeties), VanGorder said their injuries set them back.

"Guys have to stay healthy," VanGorder said. "Young players cannot afford to miss time. It's just invaluable to them. They've lost time. That's not a good thing. They can't be the same player because of lost time, so they've got to recover that as quickly as they can and try to close the gap that they've kind of created.

"Their plates are full. They've got to do a lot in respect to operating our defense. There's a lot of communication involved. They've got to really detail their work during the summer collectively together and get a comfort level with having to do that. They've never had to take on as much in respect to that responsibility like they are now. We've got to get them comfortable. Lost time is hard to make up."

Be afraid, be very afraid for those DBs. And say a prayer for their mommas.
