Love the fact we can go into other big states and pull out talent but our instate recruiting is pretty sad. Wish we could get more guys who understand the rivalry with the coots on the team. Would like to see us be able to get some of the talent in the state over them going to cootville.

Steve Spurrier caught Dabo early and beat us but since then we've enjoyed braggin' rights regularly.
It just doesn't seem that instate talent is all that talented to me.

Lots of talent in SC just not a lot of good HS coaches or money for proper weight training.

We recruit very well just hate seeing good instate talent head to the coots. SC isn’t loaded with crazy talent but there are some good players. Good having kids who are passionate about the rivalry as well. Really hoping we get Donovan Murph that kid is good.

him early in the game. That game still irks me to no end, I mean serious irkage.
DJ stunk it up, could not get anything going...yet we ride with him and end up losing the game because we could not get scores with him as QB.
The coaches are largely, completely, to blame for that loss in 2022. Trick plays on kickoffs that turn into disasters. Multiple throws into dirt, or into sidelines/stands. Multiple fumbles. Nobody was ready to play or coach that day and I wish I could forget it...but Coots instate recruiting is not what cost Clemson that game, it was Clemson themselves who laid a gigantic egg on the field.

South Carolina doesn't have an overabudance of HS football talent. This is why Clemson needs to recruit out-of-state players. Georgia, Alabama, and Tennesee have far better HS talent than SC. Texas, Virginia and especially Florida, are richer as well. Unfortunely, there aren't great HS coaches in the Palmetto State. Not enough mentors who really know how to coach, develop young players at the HS level, as evidended by other Div. 1 schools who don;t recruit here. The Gamecocks probably recruit from SC better, but look at their football history: South Carolina has never been a traditional power in the nation in College Football, and the school has been around for over a 100 years. You must be able to recriut nationally like a Notre Dame, or a Ohio State, who only recruit in Ohio, another talent-rich state. Clemson is where they are because of their ability to recruit out of state.

latest, newest excuse for why a team with a history losing, a goofy twink HC, and a fan base that runs around in public in garb that has "I love my #####" printed in bold across the chest has whipped us for nearly every Nat'l recruit the state has produced in the last 3-4 years. NIL/TP has narrowed our recruiting footprint and talent pool making instate recruiting losses far more damaging than in the recent past.

There's a hidden topic about recruiting players in SC. Our states education system is terrible. Consistently in the bottom of all states. Clemson is a premier educational institution and most HS football players .. especially the talented ones are not up to the educational standards of Clemson University. We used to tell kids to go to JUCO for a year and then transfer in when they pull their grades up. (Tommy Bowden) But now they just don't make the cut educationally to get accepted.

Maybe you missed the Nate Wiggins interview. That kid is straight up not smart. There are plenty of players on our team that definitely didn’t have the grades to get in. Strings are pulled for good players to get in most big time programs.

Everyone can say what they want but mjc3194 is no coot. He's one of the most positive glass full posters on here. I'm honored to give him a TU, even if he does have me blocked.
But to address the original post, I tend to lean towards the talent level. Or lack thereof. I do think once we go to 120 scholarships, we'll be much more visible in the state and through that, we'll end up with excellent development players from in-state.

I also see our recruiting as different than it was in the past. We have particular attributes we are looking for not just star or talent rankings. We get plenty of SC talent but when you have the luxury of setting a stringent set of requirements to garner an offer from us you just aren't going to see random players getting offers.
Keep in mind with Coach Swinney being here for 16 years all the high school talent is well aware they have to work at a high standard to get a look from us.

There was an article in the Greenville News years ago titled "Why can't Johnny play football?" that told a story of many great in-state high school football players that couldn't qualify academically for top schools regardless of their football talent. The problem is not at Clemson, it's with SC public schools.

The talent pool isn’t deep in SC. In fact, according to NCAA data, SC only produced 20 players of note between 2015 and 2019. Many years only two blue chip players came from SC. However, we should win the battle instate first and foremost. That said, we are able to recruit in ANY state. Including the backyard of Alabama. It’s much better to be a national brand than a regional struggle.

Nationally in the 247Sports player recruiting rankings. We cannot win at the level we want to just by dominating our state in recruiting; we have to recruit nationally.
FWIW though for 2025 there are 4 SC players in top 247 nationally and we have 2 of em committed.

Maybe you should take a minute to look at numbers. The rankings on Rivals show South Carolina with 8 recruits that are 4 star and we have a commitment from 3. Compare to Georgia with 3-5 star guys and 48-4 star guys. Think we could win with our main focus being South Carolina kids? Nope, I don't either.

Firstly, using “worst” in that context seems pejorative. It implies a lack of effort or success that is not in evidence.
Secondly, of the 13 commits to Clemson, two are from SC. Seems about right. 15%?
Thirdly, I’m not sure it’s athletic quality in the state that is questionable. IMHO it’s academic quality. Despite NIL etc., it’s still admittance to the academic program that determines success at CU. and it’s the combo of outstanding ability athletically and high test scores and good grades combined with character that qualifies one for a CU offer. In SC, that’s a relatively small pool.
Besides, in SC some kids are just USC fans - as hard as that is to swallow. (Pun intended).

Not sure I understand your question? Except for a few head-scratching losses his first few seasons we own South Carolina in Football since Dabo took the job.
Big fast guys generally beat small fast guys, or big slow guys. The state of SC simply doesn't have enough big fast guys to field a consistent top 20 program, much less 2 state programs.
The state of South Carolina is small potatoes in college football recruiting. Can you explain how ignoring the best players from all over the country in favor of less talented players from South Carolina would make Clemson better?
(Is your goal to win in-state recruiting titles, or to win Championships? Clemson has better players and recruits better talent than South Carolina. If Clemson took all the best in-state players each season instead of recruiting national we'd win 3-4 games a year.)

doesn't want to buy into what Clemson is selling, that is his loss, not ours. For whatever reason, a lot of the in-state kids just seem to be brought up steeped in Cootism. Hunter Renfrow - Socastee, SC Nuk Hopkins - Central, SC Mike Williams - Saluda, SC
I'll throw in 10 year NFL veteran Adam Humphries from Roebuck!
Jordan McFadden is from Roebuck.
Antonio Wiliams is from South Carolina - folks are just mal-informed when it comes to the talent in S.C.
Every time I hear there is no talent; I am reminded of seeing the top 3 WR's in the NFL "Flat Dominated" by the State of South Carolina with:
AJ Green Sidney Rice Nuk Hopkins Alshon Jeffrey

I see the point but the reality is we have a board of players by position based on need and if we have better players higher up our list from outside the state then that leaves fewer spots for local talent. Dabo has leveraged the national brand to attract who he believes are the best players.
In short, we aren’t ignoring in state talent, we just are able to attract recruits outside the state who we think more highly of.

In S. CAROLINA all you have is CCC and nuggets...this is a small state with little emphasis on higher education! Maybe Coastal Carolina is a big deal!
