Horrible but with a good excuse.

I was taught to read by my Great Grandmother when she was in her late 60s or early 70s. She learned to read as a child in the 1880s. I read about as well as she by the time I was 4 yrs old. That was 1956.

My soul wrestled with phonics since I married my Soiux squaw in the mid 1970s. She taught our oldest daughter to read and pronounce Old Testament names before the child turned 5. My squaw was educated in Nebraska.

There's a positive side to my disability. I read Lord of The Rings in 4 days after I saw the first of the series. Since I can't pronounce names very well I ignore the pronunciations and assign the characters an identity, a town a location and other such quick solutions.

Of course I also have a spelling disability. I've memorized every word I can spell accurately. It's been a life struggle to memorize word after word. Folks think that spelling is a measure of intelligence. Maybe so but like my granny said, 'Honey, them yankees'll come down here thankin' that 'cause you talk slow, you thank slow. You let em alone and that's put you one step ahead of em'.
