8 years ago I laughed at so called "SEC fans. " I was amused by how they could pull for a team that they seemingly shouldn't care about to win games. It didn't make any sense and still seems like flawed logic.
8 years later these SEC schools are laughing all the way to the bank. They have an SEC network that will bring in every school more money. The NCAA seems to turn a collective blind eye to the shady activity of these schools because they are cash cows for the sport. There are recruits that grow up and only want to play in the SEC and it doesn't matter for what school. SEC schools are allowed to schedule terrible non-conference games and stay over ranked because of the SEC bias. There TV ratings are inflated because it seems like they always get the best TV spots and their demographic for viewership is SEC wide.
So as I watch and wish well for ACC teams this bowl season, understand that I know it is a double standard. Because as much as I hated the idea of being a conference fan I know now they were right and I was wrong. Even if it does still make me feel dirty.

It may be an age thing, but the vast majority of Clemson fans I know personally, have known for decades, tailgate with, etc., hate the ACC (as I do) and couldn't give a sh!t how ACC teams do against other competition.
Times may have changed and belonging to a "good conference" may be more important now, but generally speaking, I still cheer for any opponent of unc, Duke, Md, UVa, VaTech, GaTech, FlaSt, Miami, Notre Dame. I have yet to develop a deep dislike of Pitt or Syracuse.
I just refuse to bask in the sports accomplishments of those schools.

tigrjm76, I actually feel the same way. A rival is a rival. Unfortunately, as we now know, the SEC controls the golden goose of NCAA football. It probably would be better, going forward to the new playoff format, for the ACC (mainly the Tigers and FSU)to make a strong showing in the bowls this week. I guess I can best relate your point to basketball. Most Clemson fans would probably agree that the ACC is considered to be the best basketball conference in the nation. However, most of my Tiger friends cannot bring themselves to cheer for Duke or UNC, not even in a National Championship game.

so I'm no spring chicken. I use to pull against most of the ACC teams because of what happened in the 80's. I finally realized that if the ACC is successful then that does nothing but helps Clemson financially. Success breeds success and I am for anything that helps the Tigers succeed.

Maryland, UNC any sport and the U in football for instance.
The state of CFB as it is means that we need programs like BC, Wake Forrest and NCST to up their game and pull their weight. And we need to tune in otherwise we are just falling behind in the arms race.

Purple_Panther, You're absolutely right. I hope that I have never given the impression that I like where all this is headed. I was simply pointing out that Tiger fans need to understand the reason behind SEC solidarity over the past decade. Ka-Ching! Cash cow! Unfortunately, we now live in a "reality show" ratings driven society. It's really not about what's right, but rather what sells! And yes, it also feels dirty to me.

Football is the main sport at 4 or 5 ACC schools, and the ones we're adding aren't helping. #### with 'em. I pull for Clemson, and then hope to be entertained for all of the other games.

Like almost every conference did. But I think they realize what they need to do and are motivating the schools to do more. I think Pitt has a lot of potential as a football program. I hope the BBall first schools eventually are good at both. I've met a fair bit of Carolina fans that say they never cared about football until recently. Obviously Duke has greatly improved and will continue as long as they keep Cutcliffe. I would like to see multiple blockbuster matchups on our schedule that are generated by good in conference teams.

Pitt and Louisville will help the ACC immediately. Both were good pick-ups for the league.

But tbh I really enjoyed watching Syracuse's RBs and probably would have enjoyed watching FSU more if they hadn't shellacked us this season. I would say ACC football was underrated this year.

The Arms Race ? That is really ovetselling it , huh? How many weights and football cleats do you need ? Are the bigtime football schools that arent in the SEC poor? No. This whole shpeil about falling behind and "we gotta move NOW !" is just sensationalistic crud invented by the sports mediato give them something else to create a 1/2 hour of meaningless babble about. Nobody Iis really worried about this outside of those who watch tv orchestrated by the sellers and then believe they have seen the truth. What you really want to do here is watch how all of this numb above the neck nonsense goes away very shortly ...its kind of a dead story because it never really existed in the first place...except between the ears of the blankly staring picture tube addict.

But the actions of most major college conferences disagree with you.
Also the fact that Tennessee and Arkansas can afford 5 million dollar coaches means something. IMO coaching from top to bottom is one of the biggest differences between the SEC and the ACC.

besides ours. For me, any game other than Clemson (except for a matchup of two highly ranked teams in any league) isn't as fun when I don't have a dog in the fight.

with successful people, even those at a distance. Why? Because it boosts our self-importance, and that's why so-called fans will come out of the woodwork when a team(s) are winning.
I doubt most SEC fans started the SEC cheers believing that the yelling would improve the conference's stock. They did so believing it made their own stock seem more important, as the success of the SEC improved.
I've always been a Clemson-first type fan, taking a nonchalant attitude about other programs. However, I do believe it's important for members of any organization to support the entity to help ensure its success. I, also, believe a successful ACC improves the worth of our programs.
Does that mean I/we have to don FSU, UNC or VT colors? No...but in the long run at least passive support for our fellow members builds a loyalty that may translate to improved programs throughout the conference. And that's what the ACC members need to do: spend their revenues with further improvements.

I think the ACC leadership is coming around to the SEC perspective. They are encouraging individual schools to upgrade, spend lots of income on football facilities, and further brand name the conference with significant televised wins, especially over SEC, Big 10, or Big 12 teams. Like him or not, Slive understands that with media and money, "image is everything." I believe Swofford has been more than just a casual observer.
