The same play was illegal (per the SECrefs) in the 2014 Clemson game versus USuC

No. The Gamecock player at the last instant quickly (and smartly) waved

his hand for a fair catch. We didn't allow him the opportunity to catch it. That's what's different between the two.

The coot player signaled for a fair catch, which is legal in the field of play. That is why they were awarded the ball. We interfered back then. I wish you were right, but sorry to say you are mistaken.

Nope...the difference. There was a Scar player in position to catch the kick...vs this game, there wasn't a Clemson player in position to be able to catch it. Bolded below is why it was different. Play was legal because it became a live ball when Clemson had no one in the location it was kicked, thus no one to call a foul against for impeding.

NCAA (2014)
Rule 6 Section 4 Opportunity To Catch a Kick

Interference With Opportunity

ARTICLE 1. a. A player of the receiving team within the boundary lines attempting to catch a kick, and so located that he could have caught a free kick or a scrimmage kick that is beyond the neutral zone, must be given an unimpeded opportunity to catch the kick (A.R. 6-3-1-III, A.R. 6-4-1-V, VI and IX).

b. It is an interference foul if, before the receiver touches the ball, a Team A player enters the area defined by the width of the receiver’s shoulders and extending one yard in front of him. When in question it is a foul.(A.R.6-4-1-X-XIII)

c. This protection terminates when the kick touches the ground (Exception: Free kick, par. f below), when any player of Team B muffs or touches a scrimmage kick beyond the neutral zone, or when any player of Team B muffs or touches a free kick in the field of play or in the end zone (Exception: Rule 6-5-1-b) (A.R. 6-4-1-IV).

Nope - Illegal Procedure (see attached pic)

Not that it does any good to whine about it, but I believe Alabama had at least one player outside of the nine-yard marks after the ready-for-play signal (this is on the opposite side of the field as the recovery), which is in violation of Rule 6-1-2-I-IV:

RULE 6 Kicks
Section 1. Free Kicks
Free Kick Formation
ARTICLE 2.
...
c. When the ball is kicked (A.R. 6-1-2-I-IV):
...
5. All players of Team A must have been between the nine-yard marks
after the ready-for-play signal [S19].

penality - five yards from previous spot.

Amirite or amiwrong?
