It was...by half time the UNC bench was in the shade, our bench in the sun until well into the 4th quarter. There was no reprieve, that sun was merciless and it was HOT.

The highest temperature ever recorded in the US was 134F in Death Valley, CA in 1913. I think someone read the thermometer wrong!

Temperature reading depends on several factors.

If a thermometer was placed in the sun & very close to the turf, it could conceivably give a reading if 150F. Especially if there is asphalt or some other heat-trapping material underneath the turf (though I have no idea what is actually beneath that surface at Kenan). For any temperature reading to be "official" or deemed "accurate", the device must be placed in continual shade & 5 feet above the ground, since either direct sunlight or radiational cooling from the ground can distort readings.
