I know, I know, Brad Brownell's a great "x's and o's" guy, but geez, 10 pts in the first half. And I know he doesn't shoot the ball, but he's got to find someone who can score, who can hit shots. The greatest coach in the world can't win if he has no talent on the team.

problem is that for Clemson to be successful in basketball, the coach has to be bigger than the program. Barnes and Purnell were, in their own way. Shyatt and Brownell aren't. People love to criticize USC football fans for being proud of being in the SEC but at least they try be as good as the top SEC teams. It doesn't appear that we're trying in basketball. I'm not talking about this team but the program as a whole.

We can try as hard as we want and still not recruit the caliber of players that Duke and North Carolina bring in every year.
Reality is ... the only time we signed players of that caliber, we landed on 3 years NCAA probation.
Once in a while, we sign a player who we "think" is that caliber, but it's fools gold ... we never (legally) get a player who would have legitimately been a starter for Duke or North Carolina.
Just like Duke will probably never compete year-in and year-out with us in football, we will never be competitive with them in basketball.
We'll beat them occasionaly and we'll have solid teams that reach the top 4 in the ACC every few years, but we are not institutionally willing to do the sorts of things it takes to attract the highest level of basketball talent (players or coaches)to Clemson.
We're a football school. That was established 50-60 years ago and it's not likely to change now.

read this board....we care about other things more...
1. Football recruiting
2. Returning football players
3. New football coaches
4. Baseball
We simply don't really care about it as a whole.

about Brownell...
He deserves 2-3 more years to fix the crap Purnell left us in. We have great freshman who are currently out for the season injured who will be tremendous impacts next year. KJ is greatly improving and will be the backbone of the team for 2 years.
It's bandwagon fans that really know football and not much about basketball that hop on and make these blanket complaints that are the problem...
