Lincoln Riley

Jan 11, 2023, 9:57 AM

So I keep seeing USC fans saying that Lincoln Riley is a better coach than Dabo because Dabo only won two natty's because he had two generational QBs.

This is probably the dumbest argument I have ever seen since Riley has had four generational QBs (Mayfield, Murray, Hurts, Williams) and hasn't won ANY playoff games let alone a national championship.

Caleb Williams is the only generational talent of the ones that you mentioned.

And what has he won.

Caleb just finished his sophomore season at USC lol...

This isn't the USC of the mid-200s

That program has been mediocre for a long time.

Give him a break...

I think Riley is a good coach, but Hurts and Murray were definitely generational talents too.

However, to say that Riley is a better coach than Dabo is a little ridiculous. The job that Dabo has done with little Ole' Clemson vs taking over blue blood programs in Oklahoma and USC is a little different.

I wouldn't argue that Lincoln is better than Dabo

I'm just arguing about which QBs are generational talents

So the top college QB each year is generational ? Or a Heisman is automatically generational?

Hurts and Murray not “generational”. Not even for their respective programs.

Lincoln Riley's team just lost to Tulane***

He also took over a 4-8 team and went 11-3 in

his first season. Meanwhile Oklahoma went 6-7 after finishing 11-2 last year under Riley.

He's a top 5 coach in CFB regardless of whether he's won a title.

Top 5 in CFB is debatable***

Well name your 5

Jan 11, 2023, 12:03 PM

I think the top 3 is still Saban > Smart > Dabo, but he's as good of a candidate for #4 as anyone.

I believe only 4 active coaches have titles and one of those is Jimbo Fischer who shouldn't even be sniffing anyone's top 10 list these days.

Candidates for #4 and #5

Guys with playoff experience:

Riley (3)
Ryan Day (3)
Brian Kelly (2 + BCS title game)
Jim Harbaugh (2)
Sonny Dikes (1)
Luke Fickell (1)

Guys that consistently "overachieve" at worse programs:

Kyle Wittingham
Mark Stoops

Special slimeball category:

Lane Kiffin
James Franklin
Jimbo

My 4-6 is 100% Day, Riley and Kelly - probably in that order, but i could be convinced to mix it up. Harbaugh is making a resurgence, and, combined with what he did at Stanford, could get back into my top 6 soon if he doesn't bolt for the NFL again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My top 5 in no particular order would probably be...

Jan 11, 2023, 12:23 PM

Dabo, Saban, Day, Kirby and Kelly.

I would have Riley in my top 10 with Harbaugh and Whittingham.

He also took with him a few key pieces from Oklahoma and basically left that program on fire.

That’s a tough argument. Leon makes a valid point, but still.

I would add that the overall talent of our two championship teams on both sides of the ball wasn’t too shabby, either.

Apples to oranges imo. But then again, ANY time people try to determine ‘The Best Ever’ or ‘Greatest of All Time’, this is what you get. Just too subjective and too many variables.

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Did Lincoln Riley earn the type of grief with the Spencer Rattler development failure that Streeter has with DJ? Doesn't seem like it, especially on here. Is it because Streeter's generational QB's were only able to muster Heisman finalist spots, plus of course two national championships, while Riley actually produced Heisman winners, that he seems to get a pass on that one bust like he does?

Riley is good at offense and recruiting. I think basically the same of Sark and Kiffin. Imo, Lincoln Riley is a okay head coach.

Re: USC fans saying he’s better than Dabo, I just shake my head. USC is like UGA for California, if you can imagine that. Many of their “fans” never went there and just love a front runner. And like the Dawgs, they’re miserable to be around when they’re winning and delusional when they’re not. Tulane winning that bowl game was glorious.

Trivia question: How many Heisman Trophy QBs does it take to win a National Championship? Apparently, a lot more at OK than Clemson...
