Is Swofford right about his selection of conference teams?

Oct 17, 2014, 4:11 PM

Lord knows I hate me some Swofford. But you read stories like this:

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/10/16/will-cbs-hbo-kill-cable

And it makes you wonder if he might be onto something. The more the current business model of cable providers ("bundling") crumbles, the more the shift will go from "how many TV subscribers are around you" to "how many people actually like to watch you". So, whereas a Maryland and a Rutgers are great BTN gets now because of New York and Washington, if asked to spend $5 a month JUST to watch Rutgers or Maryland, how many would? Louisville, on the other hand, has fantastic ratings (basketball). And Notre Dame has a huge following nationwide. If it gets to more "a la carte", similar to Netflix, HBO, CBS, Apple TV...could this point more to the ACC's benefit?

What you said makes a lot of sense. Because of this, I am even more convinced that it never crossed Swofford's mind. Most of what I see him do makes very little sense.

The B1G wasn't covert at all about their selection of UMD and the fact that it is basically inside a major metro city.

Losing Metro Markets isn't going to be a good thing for us in the long run. Good thing about the DC area is that there are a lot of people here that went to UVA and VT too. However, not surprising, people I've met that went to UVA maybe when to 5-7 games their entire college career.

The amount of support for college football there is almost non-existent. They'd rather pay attention and spend money on the Redskins, Pats, Steelers, Ravens, and Eagles. I'd imagine Sunday Ticket has a large number of subscribers there, but there's a huge disparity in the amount of VT/UM/UVA attire being worn as opposed to around here. Heck, even TV and radio barely talk about them at all.

Like him or not, the man is pretty smooth. He kept the acc from falling to the side by gobbling up big east teams. He kept the acc from being gobbled up by Big 10 and Big 12 through grant of rights. He also brought in the best team available to replace Maryland and he laid the ground work to include ND in the future. If they do ever join maybe West Virginia finally gets tired of the screwy deal they have and become the 16th member. Maybe not but like I said Swofford isn't dumb and he usually makes things work out for the acc and ultimately his beloved uncheat!

You are right, the support is very much for the Redskins, however, you have around 6 million people in the metro area. A huge majority of the pollution is college educated. If 17% of the population watches games on Saturday that's still a million people watching games in a small area over all.
