Anyone else think the reason for heavily considering a RS

for Chad Kelly maybe some possible skepticism of the solidity Deshaun Watson's commitment? I mean I would had to RS Kelly and the him have only one year of solid playing time just to be replaced by Watson (if he lives up to the hype).
But on the other hand, you burn a year, maybe two, of Kelly's eligibility and then no D Watson, we only have Kelly for 2 years.
Thoughts?

I don't think anyone could responsibly manage a multi-million dollar earning team based off of the potential "commit" of a junior in high school. I hope we get Watson, but I think you have to make roster judgements for the current and immediate future based on the players you have, not the potentials. If he was a 2013 recruit maybe it weghs some but 2014 is just too far off in the future. I do think it would be better to RS Kelly so that if Watson does flip on us we have 3 years of him potentially starting when Boyd leaves instead of 2.

From what I could tell, you said "Thoughts?"...

Good point, guess that would depend on Kelly's backup

If he's not the clear #2 then I would say you almost have to redshirt. What would be the point of him burning a year that he doesn't have to as the 3rd option.

Assuming Watson does in fact follow through with his commitment to Clemson and enroll in 2014, he is not guaranteed a starting position. He will have to earn it just like everyone else on the team. I doubt you will find Kelly willing to concede the starting position to him based on what Watson has shown in a couple of years in high school. I think the ideal situation is one in which a highly talented athlete comes into a school with the ability to compete for a starting position but not a situation in which the success of a team hinges on a true freshman. It is best if he does not HAVE to play.

I do not think Watson should factor into the equation.

The bottom line is that we want to win THIS year, and if Chad gives us the best chance to do that then he is number 2. If not, then he redshirts. Also, Deshaun Watson is a junior in HS, and the 2014 signing day is a long way away.

IMO You play the best players period. It does not matter

who might be coming in next year. If a player is ready then play him. If he is not then RS him and coach him up to get him ready for next year. I think the coaches will put the best players on the field.

If Chad Kelly had established himself as a clear #2 QB then

he'd be playing.
The coaches want to win and they want to prepare the players with the best chance to help them win now, not next year, or the year after.
Hats off to Kelly for being good enough to cause us to even have this debate when he was competing against a guy with 2 years in the system.

Why burn a year of eligibility if he's not going to play? Even if all of the QB's are even, RS him and let him develop, learn the offense, mature, and get adjusted to being in college. He is one I think could use a year to get his head straight

anything to do with Deshaun Watson! If he decides to decommit from Clemson and go elsewhere then so be it, we will have to ramp up our recruitment of another highly sought after QB...Our staff has a plan and whatever it is I am with them fully, as should all true Tiger fans. I like this post and feel that Kelly could easily be our starter next year once Tajh has left for the NFL...Thats another topic entirely so we will just have to see

Chad's going to be a great QB in this system. He has a strong arm, he's an aggressive, agile runner (moreso than Tajh), and he has a bag of confidence. A year to grasp the playbook and adjust to college life will work wonders for this kid. He'll be the #2 guy behind Tajh in what should be a huge '13 season, and then he'll be the man the following year.

In a perfect world I would RS every QB. The position demands so much maturity and knowledge. I would RS Kelly regardless if he is the number two QB or not. He wold be better off red shirting. If Boyd goes down then I think regardless if it's Kelly or Stoudt or season will definitely suffer. I don't think that Kelly has the offense down. I believe this is why Stoudt is the number two. I think a system like The Chad's needs redshirted QB's. Wonder if "not" redshirting Kelly was a promise made?
