On joint supplements? I know many out there have labs so any advice is appreciated to ease her pain. All blood work is great.
She can't sleep at night and yelps when trying to reposition on her bed. (Loudly)

I wish I could help. had to put my 13 yo lab down three months ago. He became sick all of a sudden. quit eating. did everything we could. it was a sad day.

my dog Jake went down fast. He was the only lab I ever hunted with that retrieved every bird I was able to knock down.

The joint supplements are mostly for prevention and take a while, if at all, to restore.
We lost our 12 yr old Aussie in December rather unexpectedly.

Woooo I'm going to be totally heart broken when that times comes for my Rott. Their life expectancy is 10 years, and mine is 11 right now. He is the best friend I've ever had in the canine order, and I just don't know how I would be without him. I've never had an animal show the love that this one has shown me over his 11 years. For me, it won't be any different when he goes as it would be if I lost my wife or kid bc I love him that much. He has been at every foot step I've made since I got him as a 3 month old pup. Every time he is let outside, he don't slow down when he comes in until he finds me where ever I am in the house, and that's every time. He won't let a stranger or another dog get close to me until I let him know that it's OK. I've had a dog my entire life, and I've never had another one like him. If I'm gone away from the house, he won't let a stranger any where close to my wife, and that's no mater what she tells him, it ain't happening. If daddy ain't home, no stranger will get close to momma period. We have to let the blinds up a few inches at night so he can make his rounds, or he will move them his self so that he can see out regardless of what the blinds look like after he's moved them. Like I've said, there has never been another one like him, especially of how protective he is of his daddy and momma. And it's going to about kill me when he has to go. That dang confetti is in my house again!!!

he quit eating and went to the vet 4 times in about two months. I tried cooking him steak chicken turkey whatever. They tested everything and couldn't find anything wrong. He'd eat for a few days and then just quit eating. Went to NC State Vet hospital for 4 days he wouldn't eat their either. I drove to Raleigh every day to visit and try to get him to eat. Tried all their fancy foods. Ran out of tests to run. Dog was 37 lbs they sent him home on 7 medicines. The very next morning I fed him ground turkey and rice and he ate. He's eating ground turkey and rice every day since and he is now 58 pounds. The vet bills were about 6000, the dog is not insanely spoiled. He sticks to me like glue when I am home. This was a little over a year ago.

I think the pet version of the joint supllemets are more expensive than the people version but they are the same. Buy the people version from the store if the animal version at pet smart is more expensive. Just give half the dose.

Boswellia
Curcumin
Are all supose to be over the counter joint health ingredients. Glucosamine, Chondroitin. And MSM being the most common.
But listen, they arnt oxycodone. You won't see immediate benifits. You have to take them every day for a few weeks. Even then you will slowly feel better.
Until she feels better,I'd giver her a small dosage of ibprophin or acetometaphine at night.

Novox 100mg twice daily, Gabapentin 100mg 2 twice daily. Both meds can be purchased from Smith & Foster pet meds cheap. If your vet won't let you have it at a comparable price as Smith & Foster, just ask him to give you a prescription for it. My vet matched the price, and he makes his money from the visits. My Rott got to where he couldn't get up 5 steps without stopping. On these meds, no problems, he comes right up. After your pet has been on these med for a few days, you will see a day and night difference. Hope this help bc I'm a chronic dog lover. They have always been my best friends hands down!!!

Tramadol and if his weight is at all high put him on a diet. I also tried to eliminate him going up and down steps - like moving his bed from our bedroom to downstairs. That was a little sad at first but he was so unsteady on stairs I was worried he would fall.

First lab had cancer around a vertebrae in his neck. He took prednisone for a year before we put him down. It really seemed to help. Probably would work for arthritis.
I remember going to the vet's office to get more and the lady at the desk telling me that he shouldn't be taking prednisone for as long as he had because of the side effects. I reminded her that he didn't have long to live so the side effects didn't really matter.

My lab's 12 and she has been on them two years. She has some good days as well as some tough days.

I actually work for a Veterinary only compounding pharmacy in Arizona. Also, I had a yellow lab for 17 years until that dreadful day 7 years ago. Haven't replaced her yet and doubt I ever will. It was hard on me and still the heartache lingers. Having said that, tramadol is a strong Pain reliever along with gabapentin. I see others have suggested them. I'll ask the pharmacist today if there's any other remedies. You may want to get your lab a new bed with plenty of stuffing to ease the pain when shifting. It's tough watching them go through the twilight years, so her pain is also yours. Truly sucks!

I just lost my 12.5 year old belgian malinois about a month ago. He has arthritis in his hips pretty bad. Best I fount was close cosequin and the vet prescribed him carprofren. It worked really well. However they have also created an anti inflammatory pill that's easier on the liver. I can't think of the name of it right now but your vet would know.

I did laser therapy for my shepherd/husky mix. It's not that expensive and my vet offered it. It helped a lot. In the end she was on a lot of meds. Good luck finding something that works, it broke my heart when I finally had to put Princess down

One of my current dogs is a 14.5 yr old Flat coated Retriever. He has had a total hip replacement at 2 yrs old and a rebuilt hip at 2.5 yrs old (both hips were bad at birth). We walk 1-2 miles a day year-round. It takes time, but I treat him like I want to be treated when I am his age.
What we need to do for ourselves, we need to do for our pets. Its common sense, but we don't really apply it to ourselves as we should.
1st don't start in a hole - keep the weight off the pet. People feed them too many table scraps & treats & don't give them enough exercise.
1. Daily walks - not just around the block. A dog should be going 1+ miles a day. EVERY DAY. Even in the rain/cold/etc... Avoid the summer heat and go before the sun comes up or after dark (wear reflective clothing for both you and your pet). It is good for you too. Remember: Use it or lose it - We all need to be in better shape.
2. Healthy Food - Toss the cereal-laden stuff from the big box stores. Read labels. Cut out the grains. Quality Food - What you put in is what you get out.
3. Joint supplements: Many to try. Keratin, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Boswellia, Tumeric,
I am currently using Flex-Force for myself and my dog. It is a glucosamine that has an equine (horse), a canine, and a human form that helps to rebuild cartilage and aid in joint pain.
Many other supplements are out there. BEWARE as some are just junk and others are miracle drugs.
3A. I also use supplements, vitamins, & minerals from Standard Process (standardprocess.com).
** put good things in and you get good results.
4. Canine Chiropractic, Laser Therapy, Massage Therapy, Acupuncture Therapy; If they do it for humans, they are doing it for pets - that's why we spend Billions on our pets. Each has shown some really good results, but some work for some pets better then others, depends upon the pet, the owner, and the doctor. Rub the problem joints and muscles with light message (It works on your wife as well).
5. Be smart: If stairs are a problem, use a towel and lift the back end or the area that hurts. Put mats/rugs down to prevent slipping on slippery, smooth floors. Lift the dog in/out of cars or use a ramp.
6. Give RESPECT, TLC, LOVE, to your pet. They love you and you should love them back with they same enthusiasm that they have for you.

If you want to relieve the pain, Rymadil is the answer. I gave it to my Rott who had
two bum knees her last 3 years. Could not even get up to pee some mornings.
Gave her a Rymadil and 30 minutes later she is ready for 20 minute walk.
I told the vet I wished they made Rymadil for people - it is a wonder drug for dogs/

Sorry man. I don't have any suggestions, just wanted to offer my empathy.
My sister just put down their cocker spaniel after his blindness got too bad and his quality of life wasn't good any more.
I've got a 6 year old Weimaraner, and I'm already wondering where the time went.

turmeric and ground pepper, which is great for humans, anti-inflammatory. Sprinkle on or in food like salt twice a day. Solves many issues, even high blood pressure. But has to be taken daily over a period of time. Can't see how it would hurt a dog if it's easy on humans.
