long and I swore the last time I got caught under the 526 bridge with MBTC that I would never do that again. Lightning was popping on all sides of us that day for 45 minutes. It thoroughly sucked!

Even with my fire service career

the most scared I have ever been was one fishing trip to Santee during the mayfly hatch.
We were so busy tearing up the bream we didn't notice the storm building up behind us. It was raining so hard we couldn't see the state park as we tried to hurry over, lightning was popping all around us and the lake was whitecapping. By the time we got to shore we had taken on so much water from the rain and waves that our 16' jon boat was only sitting about 2" out of the water. We beached it the best we could and scampered up the hill to the camper thanking the Lord with every step for letting us get back.

I was caught on Lake Murray like that one day, and like you I was really worried. I even strapped a life vest on my Rottie, then tied a vest to my 100' anchor rope so that the boat could be found after we had to leave it. I was in a Lowe Stinger base boat that had so much water in it that it was severely bogging down a 115 HP engine. I was so thankful when I finally made it back to the dock at the ###. This was was in mid March, and me and my big boy was soaking wet and freezing to death we felt like. When you see the dark clouds forming on SC lakes, you better head for the hill in a hurry!!!!

as you know, the storms can be pretty rough out on open water.
Occasionally, we have seen storms forming and simply moved to another area; however, I've been caught in high whitecaps on several boats, including a Hobie with a 24' mast as a giant lightning rod. Neighbors and I have been at the Lake Murray or Lighthouse Marinas late at night numerous times and had to steer through storms returning to Hilton Sound...about an eight mile trip by water.
Several years ago friends were visiting and on one of those marina trips we left about three a.m. for the return in high winds, whitecaps and a he1l of a thunder boomer. I had a Regal cruiser, and the crowd immediately went below into the cabin area and remained. Rather than buttoning up, I decided I could pilot easier (meaning, see better) and by the time we entered Hilton Sound I swore never to undertake another trip like that. The "swearing" was misguided....lol

You didn't kill any fish with all that aluminum cleaner on your boat did you? Kidding. Been caught in one good rain storm on hartwell once, not too fun. Soak and wet that was the coldest ride back to the house.
