Amazing stats.
DJ was 107th out of 110 passers. Wow. Clemson fielded the 3rd worst QB in the nation for an entire season. That doesn’t sit well with me. Only one other QB out of 110 threw less touchdowns. Those stats just blow my mind. Especially with TP and HH on the bench. I gotta believe those two back ups had to be better than 107 out of 110. It blows me away that the coaches refused to make a change at qb. My honest opinion and only conclusion I can make is that DJ strong armed the coaches and flat out said “if you bench me I’m gone” and if that’s the case, he’s probably already shopping for his next team.
DW4 out of high school a 97 rating. TL a 99. And Klubnik a 99.
I don’t know what DJ was rated but I highly doubt there will be much of a competition this spring.

DJ's rating was 99.49 out of high school. I'm not ready to give up on him just yet. I want to see him on a team with fully healthy receivers and a consistent offensive line in place. We saw what he did at BC and ND games when he had both in place. Let's see what happens if he has that again.

Thanks for posting his rating. I guess you can’t really put much stock in high school rankings anywho. But the refusal to make a change throughout the year with a qb playing that badly(and yes he had limited help with injuries and oline) just doesn’t seem wise. But hey I’m not the one making millions of dollars a year so what do I know

https://www.al.com/recruiting/2019/12/future-clemson-qb-get-revenge-beats-bama-5-star-qb.htmlFuture Clemson QB gets revenge on Bama 5-star Clemson quarterback commit D.J. Uiagalelei led St. John Bosco (Calif.) to a 39-34 victory over Young and Mater Dei (Calif.) in Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship game.
Here is something you have to ask yourself. If DJ and Bryce swapped places what might have happened? DJ was ranked ahead of Brice in high school and they split a state championship playing against each other. Again, we saw what DJ could do with a good OL and receivers against BC and ND so we know if he is protected and in sync with his receivers he has the potential to be a great QB. We just need to provide that support and see if he can repeat what he did as a Freshman.

the lack of tenacity is what worries me.

Deshaun was tenacious and would not allow a poor performance to linger. It was poor performance after poor performance this year. Yes he can get better. But i worry about when he gets punched in the mouth next year does he fold and just allow it to dictate the game again? Some players have that inner drive to punch back and some just ride the wave down. I think he's a great kid, a very humble and nice dude. But can he turn on that savage competitor mode inside of him and step on necks? Thats what he's gotta get in the off-season. But then after that he's gotta maintain it. Its possible he could go from worst to first. But i wonder if its in him...IT'd be a great story.

DJ did not attend Elite 11 camps and compete against other top QB's. Klubnik competed and won all the drills in multiple camps.

I appreciate Coach Swinney's decision to stick with DJ this season but answer me this what was the alternative? Now the Stats don't lie, DJ ranks 107 out of 110 and I am sorry, it's Not because of his receivers! As a former old school player, I could tell you where DJ was going with the ball from my living room couch. And when he was not telegraphing his throws he could not see the 20 yards of wide open space in front of him??? Furthermore,DJ simply cannot read defenses. Next season if DJ is still where he is for 2021, then Dabo WILL have an alternative (that he did Not have this year) and his name is Case (alias Deshawn Lawrence).

Even in that ND game his Fr year, he had his infamous pitch/shovel pass to the defender for 6. His decision making to me is his downfall. Yeah he didn't benefit from bad WR play and constant drops throughout the year, but the mental part has to be there to take the next step. Either way, it'll be a short lease in that first game or 2...or maybe throughout Spring and Fall practice.

If any player were to talk to Dabo like you have posted, I believe that he would say, good luck on your next team. I believe if DJ got legitimately beat out, he would accept it. If not, I don't believe this young man would make threats.

I would have thought that too. I’m not saying that’s what happened. But there were several times throughout the year where it seem like QB1 had a bit of an attitude inconsistent with our previous more humble QB1s. Just seemed off to me.

I believe you are incorrect about that and wonder if you can give an example. I've never heard or read anything about DJ except that he's the most humble of young men. And a very hard worker.

Sure. The biggest thing that stands out is when he was benched(very) briefly. He was interviewed and asked if he learned anything by watching and being benched. And he smugly answered very quickly “nah I didn’t learn anything. I just wanted to get back on the field”
Just didn’t seem like a humble answer to me, more of a I’m the best and don’t deserve to be benched cam Newton type of answer.

more stupid than anything. A QB has to be a smart guy - the smartest guy on your offense. Everything I've heard and seen so far would indicate that HE AIN'T.

TP literally took himself out of the game after his best drive of the season. And no, HH would not have been a better option. The season is over. We all know DJ had a massively disappointing season, no one more so than him. So what's the point of the continued pile on? Yes, it's a message board but that shouldn't be free reign to restate the same arguments over and over again. Perhaps focus on Klubnick and how excited you are about him. But there is absolutely nothing informational to the readers of this board nor beneficial to the program to continue regurgitating just how poorly DJ's season went.

I’m not the one who wrote the article that basically “piled it on” stating facts about Clemson fielding the 107th ranked QB for 13 straight starts. My OP was pointing out that it seemed strange the coaches never considered a change from 107th to see if maybe one of the back ups could have been 103rd or maybe even 75th. And if you don’t like what people poast then your input is irrelevant and useless, so I imagine you do it to get your knickers off attempting to sound logical and superior to boost your internet ego. Way to go boss.

There is a lot more to judging a QB's field potential
Jan 3, 2022, 11:41 AM
|
|
than what any of us on TNET know.
examples: He has to KNOW, KNOW, KNOW the playbook and every nuance for the situation. He has to have a situational awareness and an ability to lead the team on the field. Must have a confidence to execute in all situations. and on and on...
All of these types of strengths must be evaluated before choosing who takes the field. I have little faith that anyone on this board can say there was a better choice riding the bench. You're speculating on something you have no information about.
Seems to be what people speculate most about.

There has to be something that we don’t know about. If we really needed to know Dabo would have told us ..I think!
Coming out of high school DJ was a notch below the Bama quarterback. Apparently is was a big notch!
The stats for the year tells me all I need to know DJ was at the very bottom of QB ratings and it wasn’t the ol or receivers fault completely.

DJ has to be able to intuit the play pre-snap and respond to the reads post-snap without deliberation.
At this level of college football a 1/2 to 1 second delay in action is deadly. Defenses are too fast for that.
It was clear this fall that DJ and his receivers did NOT spend the extra time they needed spring and summer to ensure coordination.
MAYBE that was a lesson learned.

DW4 and TLAW had strong relationships with the entire offense and worked during the offseason. DJ had a lot of family troubles and I think he spent a little more time in Cali then in clemson during the offseason. Not faulting him at all for it, but the biggest thing I notice was almost zero chemistry between QB and receiver.

It is sad that we must be negative when looking at dj.. can not imagine him being a d1 qb..he throws too hard and wildly, can not read defences...has no idea about rpi...no touch.. does not throw his receivers open...picks out one and stares him down...routinely misses wide open folks...107 does not lie...with an average qb we win natty...need more than one good qb on bench. Sphere was dabo?

thinking this all year. During DW’s and TL’s time they talked about how much they worked in the off season with WR’s and the subtle communications on the field. They were seeing the same thing.
Didn’t hear any indication of that this year. May not mean much? Covid surely didn’t help with off season voluntary workouts?
Iron sharpens iron. We will see what DJ is made of now that he has real competition for a job. Would be great to see him come in about 225-230 to help with mobility. I do think people are prematurely writing him off.

Maybe I’m missing something, but DJ doesn’t seem to interract with his teammates on the sideline, so seems like a lack of chemistry/leadership to me. If so, this isn’t a recipe for success for the person who needs to be the offense team leader.

I think you're on to something. I don't think I can remember seeing DJ huddled with the recievers on the sidelines. For most of the year the excuse was that the qb and wr's were not on the same page, forgive me but isn't it the coaches job to get the players on the same page? If that was happening week after week then some coach was NOT doing his job, and Dabo would not have allowed that to continue. I still think that DJ looked like a deer in the headlights for most of the season and Without the running game bailing him out it would have been a lot worse.

Your comment and the comments below all point to one thing. Streeter is a horrible quarterback coach. The fact he was elevated to OC should totally upset every Clemson fan. He should’ve been fired, not promoted. DJs failures are totally on the quarterback coach. If DJ was 107 out of 110, and the other two quarterbacks on the bench could not outperform the 107th quarterback in the country, Streeter is a total failure.
