I don't begrudge anyone looking to make money and earn what they can given whatever system is there at the time. Today NIL (and soon direct cash payment) are the norm, so not knocking it.

That said, do we think our student athletes (in football esp, and also in basketball to lessor degree) value at all either their education or their association with our fine university and community?

Coaches make a ton, perhaps too much, but Dabo and most coaches genuinely love Clemson and have some appreciation for being where they are. Do the players? What fraction might? I would like to think many players have a warm feeling about being here - I hope so.

If coaches make tons of money, players start to make tons of money, will anything be left for other sports? And does Clemson the University and its general student body benefit in any way from athletic department?

Agree, this article is completely inaccurate. Dabo just doesn’t like to lead with NIL, but certainly leverages NIL particularly for players that have proven themselves on the team. Certainly we’ve lost some transfers, but very few impact players. Mukuba is only regrettable loss I can think of.

fake name. Joined SI yesterday? Poor grammar.

Huh???

I don't think a real writer was willing to put their name on this crap.

He's still a young guy out there in the world ballin' and figuring it out as he goes along.

Something in him guided him here where our program helped him bust through the wall and blossom, boom for us, and look at him now.

All good. Go Tigers!

a pretty strong connection overall. But I'll say this, as for "college" football as a whole in 2024, Pay-For-Play and Unrestricted Free Agency (code names NIL and Transfer Portal) have made for very little connection anymore between players and the Universities on their jerseys. It's roaming mercenary ball. And that is sad.

you mean we actually call them student athletes still? the esecpn folks want you to believe you can only survive using the pay for play guys in the portal.....but no one talks about the academic success of these portal dudes.

...when was the last time during a broadcast did you hear the PBP guy or color anal-ist note a school's football graduation rate. Remind me of the game when either UGA's 41% or Clemson's 95%+ graduation rate was promulgated? Somehow, though, they never forget to mention "he's a transfer from." The $EC, BIG10, E$ECPN and to some extent the ACC, view graduation numbers are an "unnecessary and insignificant" detail" You know..."money talks and bull shirt walks."

One of the biggest attractions for high school students to apply to a college or university is an exceptional achievement by a sports team. When a school wins a championship, makes the NCAA tournament or just has a great season, the number of applications goes up. What students get is the pride of being part of a great athletic program, wearing great looking merch displaying their pride and immediate recognition when it comes job hunting time.

and I just cannot fathom looking through resumes and saying..."whoa...Oregon...heck of a football program...let's bring this guy in and see if he's a fit." "Hmmm...Clemson grad...I don't know...they've slipped a bit on the football field...I'm not sure this applicant will have what it takes..."

Just seems hilarious. I know a good football program gives the school name recognition but I think we are REAAAAALLY discounting the ACTUAL academics of the schools...the faculty, the career development team, etc. At some point, you can't just say "It doesn't matter, all is good because football is free advertising."

Dabo's take on NIL? I mean, that just doesn't seem like a big deal.

The article is hack work, obviously. The kid who wrote it is a part time writer who writes about Auburn and MLB. He has no objectivity and little perspective on Clemson as a program. Beyond that, his writing his just hackish.

"Not only has Swinney, a two-time national championship-winning coach, not finished a season inside the top ten since the abbreviated 2020 campaign but it's a problem entirely of his own making, per reports."

"Per reports"!?!

"The coach has previously gone on the record as "not believing" in the transfer portal, outright refusing to allow players to transfer into the Clemson program from other schools"

"outright refusing to allow players to transfer"? Is that how it works for a top college program? Most of them just let you come on in, but not Clemson. They refuse.

But when Wiggins' agent went to request more NIL funds to stay in lieu of a potential transfer to Oregon, he received extensive pushback from the staff, a fact that confused Wiggins.

"If he don't pay nobody, eventually they're going to leave," he said on the podcast. "So you ain't going to have a team."

We do pay people. Everyone knows the policy at Clemson is that we aren't going to write big checks to get kids on campus and we aren't paying mercenaries for one year contracts from other schools. But we package NIL for our players. How about Nate tells us what his agent was asking for? Did we push back and say he would get nothing? Or did we push back and say he'll get less? Did this..."journalist"...think that was an important point for his hit piece?

Fourteen players transferred after the season, including starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

And how does that compare with other programs? How many were contributors? Was NIL a factor with DJU...or perhaps was getting benched?

And again...recruiting as slipped...here's where 247 Sports ranked us every year in recruiting:

2011 10
2012 20
2013 15
2014 16
2015 9
2016 11
2017 16
2018 7
2019 10
2020 3
2021 5
2022 10
2023 11
2024 11

Yes, 2025 is at 19 but...recruiting isn't done yet.

Anyway...yes, we had a fantastic couple years by that site's opinion after our second national championship. But we WON our national championship with players in classes that ranked 15, 16, 9, 11, 16, 7. We slipped with classes ranked 3 and 5. So...maybe getting these classes ranked around 10th in the country isn't the worst thing.

Because they are hungry to improve to be the best by out working them in every area.

Dabo try’s his best to prevent getting cancer on his team!

He’s been the best coach at winning since 2014.

Every one minus Alabama would’ve love to have that much success!

Nate's top end speed was something to behold, and I wish him nothing but the best. But can you attend and get out (possibly graduate) from Clemson and make such grammatical errors?

And yes, the article lacked crucial details: how much did he want? how much did Oregon offer him? what did we counter with?
