Clemson Wrestling

Mar 7, 2016, 10:19 AM

do you guys think we will ever bring back the Wrestling Team? Heck, the causal CU fan might not even know we had a successful wrestling team from 75-95, before budget issues caused it to be disbanded.

Wrestling at Clemson University was banned in 1995 despite the success of the program due to financial shortages from Tiger Athletics funding from the university. The wrestling program began in 1975 winning the ACC title as a team in 1991. The Tiger wrestling program produced 8 overall wrestlers with All-American status, two NCAA Champions, and a finish at the NCAA Championships as high as 7th in 1994. Sammie Henson is a former standout at Clemson, as one of the most accomplished tiger wrestlers with a 1993 and 1994 NCAA Champion titles who eventually earned a 2000 Olympic silver medal and became a 1998 World champion in freestyle wrestling.

Wrestling (1975-1995)
ACC Regular Season Champions 1991
ACC Individual Champions 28
NCAA Individual Champions Noel Loban (1980), Sammie Henson (1993, 1994)
NCAA All-Americans 8

Dropping the wrestling program...

had very little to do with financial considerations. It was more about Title IX and the numerous NCAA violations surrounding the program.

Not trying to be negative, but I think the NCAA team didn't start until the 1977-78 season. Prior to that it was a Club Team.

Wade Schalles was the first paid Coach, and was acclaimed as the "Worlds Greatest Wrestler" by virtue of winning all the major national and international tournaments. His other claim to fame was that he delivered a loss to Dan Gables who ended up winning the 1972 Olympic gold medal. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Schalles was not a very good coach and was a despicable human being. I think he left after a year or two.

I knew nothing of college wrestling before this year

but NDSU has a team and it's pretty interesting to watch. Hayden Zilmer of NDSU is ranked #4 at the 184 level and has a shot to win the NCAA individual championship.

Some schools take it very seriously, like the Big Ten schools especially Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State and Ohio State. Only 76 D1 schools have a wrestling program. Fresno State is adding it next year to make it the 77th d1 program
