Clemson's scarcity mentality re: basketball is obvious.

Just look at Brownell's ACC tourney bonus structure:
A paltry $150,000 for a 4 seed; a dismal $200,000 for a 3 (which I think he locked up last night over ND); a mere $250,000 for a 2; a pittance of $300,000 for a 1.
Brownell has only been here 15 years and yet Clemson has already made it to the elite 8 once. It's a wonder they made it at all.
I cannot imagine the horror of having to go home, $200k bonus in hand, for being third best at what I do in my sales region.
It's an outrage.

I’m sure he prefers that guarantee over putting most of the salary into bonuses.

Imagine making ends meet on $3.5M a year.
You seem upset with our success. Guess your dislike of an honorable man and our all-time winningest basketball coach who sent both of his daughters to Clemson trumps our basketball success.

That they are rising near the top of their conference after all these years, despite such paltry compensation packages, is a testament to their GRIT and adaptability. Their willingness to overcome.

But yet last years team did despite your unhappiness.
I think you are the outrage.

I only want what's best for Coach Brownell and Clemson basketball.

Imagine how many elite 8's they'd make if the university right-sized its investment in basketball coaches to be on par with its investment in football coaches.

I think he’s being sacracstic about the specific bonus amounts but not the scarcity mentality. There is no reason for bonuses for seeding or for making/any level of performance in the NIT (even Allowat has agreed about NIT bonuses in the past). There should be bonuses for ACC regular season championship, ACC tournament championships, Final Four, and National Championship. Making the NCAA tourney and advancing should be expected, though I don’t object to small bonuses reflecting the increased length of the season. But championships should be the goal and should be what is incentivized. You shouldn’t be able to build generational wealth coaching college sports without ever actually winning anything - and that’s meant as a criticism of coaching compensation across all of college sports, not just Coach Brownell.

Also all coaches from Major Power Leagues get those incentives amounts by getting high up in standings in their conferences. Clemson is no different. Go look at those other coach;s contracts.
