Dear Brad Brownell, I am a long time defender and supporter.

of you as our coach, and of our program in general.
I've also been a part of ACC basketball for over 55 years.
It takes a lot to wear down my patience... I've suffered with Tates, Cliff, our Bill F, Ragin' Rick (god, I loved his passion), Coach Purnell, and even at times with Danny in football. But I've finally simply had more than I can stomach.
So, I must ask you... no... implore you, demand from you, beg of you,
for all that is right in this world,
simply let Larry Nnoko play.
Do not sit him again after 2 or 3 fouls, or mid-2nd half when he's picked up his 4th. It simply doesn't matter. Nnoko sitting on the bench beside you is no more important to this team than are the 3 time-outs you still have left unused from the Duke game earlier this month. He can't help us over there on the pine, and he simply wasted minutes if he finishes any game with less than 5 fouls. No more; let him play through 1, 2,3, and 4. Let him get to 5 fouls with nothing more than a couple of breaks to catch his wind. No more.
Simply play him. Play him. And tell him not to hold back, not to "reign it in", not to shy away from contact, be the 2nd coming of a young Pat Ewing in the paint, swat anything launched from within 5 feet of the basket. If he stands in the paint and does nothing, he's no better than on the bench. So tell him to go get it; go get all of it.
If he fouls out in the first 10 minutes of the game, so be it. Simply thank him for his efforts, and let Sidy go in and do the same. Once Djite is gone , put in Robertin. After he's disqualified, ask Josh Smith to give you 5 more good fouls, to make 'em count, to let 'em know he can play defense too.
And then once the sad and pathetic politic that is and has always been ACC basketball under John Swofford has fouled out these four gentlemen game after game, maybe just maybe they will find just a hint of embarrassment at their inability call a simple basketball game the same on both ends of the court.
For the love of Pete, eff the refs and eff the ACC, eff Tobacco Road and eff the old Big East Mafioso,
just let these kids just go play!

you on the other hand are obviously both too cruel spirited and arrogant
to ever go there.
one of those hangers-on types now at Clemson who proclaim their fandom
so they can also proclaim to be "better than" others.
what a laugh... if you need an internet board to validate yourself, there's clearly no hope.
when you have a real point pumpkin, write me back.

Our big guys make some terrible fouls - some totally unnecessary and some " weakly reaching in".

Yeah, it's frustrating how easily our bigs get in foul trouble.
Nnoko and Djitte being in foul trouble had to affect substitution in the sense Brownwell had to worry about those two while other players were out there struggling - Grantham and Holmes, especially Grantham. I felt he played too many minutes but he also warranted a benching after quite a few miscues.

so let's say he picks up 3 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game and stays in and then picks up his 4th late in the first half, and later fouls out in the opening minutes of the 2nd. What good does him fouling out with 17 minutes left do?

I think you need to check your math....
Jan 30, 2016, 8:26 PM
|

a player never maximizes his minutes unless
he either doesn't sit at all during the game or he fouls out at some point.
If he sits for any period during the game, then finishes the game on the floor with 4 or less fouls
then he hasn't maximized his minutes.
That's the point.
Oddly enough - if he fouls out after playing only 10 minutes he's actually maximized his minutes.
But if he finishes the game with 4 fouls having played only 10 minutes, then he hasn't maximized his minutes - he wasted some of his minutes sitting on the bench.
Yes, you'd like to have him late in the game
but he can't help us sitting on the bench waiting to go back in.

oh boy... here we go...

Your position is that a player doesn't maximize his minutes unless he fouls out. That's exactly what you said, so don't go trying to take it back or change it.
The ability to play the game without getting in foul trouble is one may to maximize minutes. If we get 10 minutes from Legend, and he doesn't commit a foul... and we find ourselves in a position with fouls to give down the stretch, then I would argue that Legend maximized him minutes by not picking up a cheap foul... resulting in us having fouls to give.
The entire premise is completely illogical, and sounds like it's coming from someone who is trying too hard to sound like an intellectual (which is exactly what is happening)
You can't say that we put a team in the bonus with over 10 minutes to go in a game, but that's ok, b/c we were maximizing our minutes.
Landry staying out of foul trouble, and as a result being available down the stretch, is a direct result of him MAXIMIZING his time. It's ridiculous to say otherwise.
Explain how putting a team on the line, where a point swing likely occurs, is an example of maximizing minutes.

on this one. Most coaches will tell you that fouls are an indicator of effort. The more fouls you accumulate, the more effort you've put into the game. You only get 5 fouls, and if you use them all, then you have obviously maximized your effort.

'Cause he had zero fouls yesterday and therefore obviously put in zero effort.

Do you remember the bsktbl fix at Chpl Hxll (UNCheat) where Clemson finished the fix (so-called game) with 4 players, as about 8 Tigers were fouled-out. (In a spirit of fairness, the ACC zebras fouled-out 2 or 3 Cheaters.) Surprise: The Tigers had about 8 less points than the Cheaters when the clock was running down. There were not any changes requested by Swoffiecheat.

No what Nnoko needs to do is stop grabbing and blocking every shot. Just stay in front of his man and play D Problem solved. When he gets 2 fouls in the first 2 mins of the game. Every coach in the ACC is going to sit him. We keep the FSU game close at half so it was the right thing to do.
