I often wonder what it would have been like had he not jumped to SMU so fast, and I wonder if he has really ever gotten a fair shake since then.

Yep. I thought it was a mistake to leave his successful HC stint at SMU for Arky

Chad was killing it at SMU (much like Billy Napier was killing it at UL). I thought Chad should have refused the Arkansas HC job and he should have waited for a job to come along where he could have been successful (like Napier turning down offers until UF called). Arkansas is always going to be an also-ran in the SEC with a disappointed fanbase calling for the HC's job. Even proven-good coaches don't succeed there (like Danny Ford, Brett Bielema, et al). But I guess it was impossible for Chad to turn down the life-changing money ($21M) that Arkansas offered him. I don't blame him.
I wonder what would have happened if he had stayed at SMU until a choice job came along (like maybe UF or Texas or OU). He was a good coach at Tulsa, Clemson, & SMU. I don't think he forgot how to coach football.

must be nice to have gotten enough contract buyout $ to do whatever you want.

For sure, nobody has it better than former Aggie coach Jimbo Fisher. If I were him, I'd buy an island and just chill forever.

Not trying to be mean about it, but like father like son. They both have bounced around, hope Virginia was a good landing spot for Chandler and it is good that Chad can take a year off to watch his son play. Lot of dads don't get that opportunity. Wonder if Elliot will seek any advice from his former boss.

I was thinking the same thing both Chad and Chandler have moved around a lot. From what I remember Chandler transferred to NTS to be with his dad or that might have been the other way around.

This might be one of those stories that you just take at face value. I could absolutely see someone like Chad wanting to watch his son's last year in college playing QB, and I can also see that perhaps being the passing coordinator at Texas State didn't offer a better alternative than that.
