Three guys from the portal after losing 16 the last two years isnt what I’d call real portal use. He’s dipped his toe in it. Not to mention the 2025 recruits that de-committed puts us at a HUGE deficit in talent. When he starts landing top 10 portal players, then you can make this claim. The facts are that we’ve lost four games last two years and more than 2012-2020 since 2021. Imagine that. Since the portal expanded, we’ve lost more games in three years than a decade plus. SMH.
It’s a decent start. A little late. Singleton from Tech would have been a great add. Many more impact players he could have taken. We need competitive depth. Those three are basically a band aid on a busted d a m.

He will play boundary but definitely won’t start. Neither will Alexander. These are depth pieces and hey I love it. I’ve been saying it for the past years. We don’t need to try to compete for the big dogs, but we do need to try and get some depth. So I love the pieces we’ve added this year. When you lose a third year player that provided depth, you need to replace him with a third year player that provides depth.

Please list the scholarship players you would have cut to make room for any name from any year leading up to now. Feel free to include late / final class additions also. Since we have a maximum number we can have at once it would help to know who you would have jettisoned to get all the players you wanted.

makes your team elite or even better. The portal guys, like ours going out, are usually not happy with their playing time. Some guys think you just go out and pick 5-star great players from a shelf at Walmart. Some guys think you can just go out and sign a bunch of guys for “depth”, but most of the portal guys are in there because they were “depth”.
Dabo has said repeatedly he considers portal players, and he has signed and tried to sign some before this year. He has always said, we’ll dig in the portal when we have an absolute need.
When I consider all the positions over the years, there is truly only one position that had a need to do much better. That was QB. I can’t think of any other starting players that should have been pushed to the side to give a portal guy the position.
Well, I think we all saw the need for a DE. Got one of the best out there. We have numbers at LB, but we weren’t sure if we had a true starter beyond Brown and Woodaz. We lost a couple WRs and looking for a rotational guy. WRs seem to rotate a lot, and you have a good chance at playing time. The new guy appears to be comfortable with that, and he’s expressed confidence he can play with anyone and will contribute.
So Dabo has tried to use and has used the portal just like he said he would. It’s not a guarantee to make anyone elite or even better, but we did appear to fill needs and improve some spots.

While those numbers are true, they can be studied on a deeper level, and basically none of those losses can be pinned on not having portal players in the game. You’re assuming we remain elite if we had portal players to replace the guys who were playing. There are tangible reasons why we lost more games the last few years, and really none of them except maybe QB can be tied to needing to sit someone for a portal guy.

I have no agenda, only stating theres no objective data showing either the portal or NIL as having moved the needle and moving people up a notch on the field.
Sometimes portal players contribute and sometimes they don’t. Fact remains they’re quitting their previous team usually due to playing time, so does that equate to improving their next team? Not necessarily.
And NIL? 3 of the current top 10 programs with the highest funding are good enough to be
considered elite. Only 3, and they’re elite even without NIL.

I never said he wouldn’t, I only said it was part of his way and I supported him. I will always support him and it’s cool to see him utilize the portal and get good dudes. I’m not giving $$ to NIL so all I can do is say I support however he operates Clemson’s is good by me.
The nonstop bee-otching is what’s annoying. We could all see Wes Goodwin wasn’t qualified to be our DC, but Dabo is obviously smart and strategic enough to run a winning program. Wes is gone, not from any of you.
I don’t know if anyone ever said he would never use the portal, but some people support him not using it before and will make arguments that support that, just like the whiners will repeat their complaints.

The actual answer would be FINALLY or I told yall so.
If anything… Dabo going to get actual contributors out of the portal shows all of us who have been screaming he wouldn’t use the portal are actually right. How can the pumpers not see that?
Even Dabo… the guy who was the last man to hold out has finally given in and went and got a couple guys. That shows he’s finally admitting that we have to use it just like everyone else.
And honestly… I still think we have more adjusting to do. I am absolutely thrilled that he’s finally at least stuck his toe in the pond and I fully believe that Heldt will be an immediate impact player and I believe Alexander and the WR will contribute in some way even if it’s just on special teams.
But we need to go even harder and get in the mix for some of these top portal guys. I consider Heldt a top portal guy but the other 2 no. I’m not saying they’re scrubs at all just not top guys like Heldt.
Someone else in this thread asked who should we get rid of to make room for others? I can name at least 20-25 guys on this roster that have no business whatsoever being on scholarship at Clemson.
Now do I want to be Colorado or FSU with the portal? Absolutely not but do I want to take 6-8 guys that can and will play immediately for us? Absolutely.
If you have an opportunity to upgrade your roster… why wouldn’t you? Especially when it’s legal and not out of bounds.
But I’ll take what we’re getting right now and hopefully these 3 will make a major impact and show Dabo and the portal haters here that it can and does actually help you.
The next thing I want to see Dabo start to do is use NIL to acquire and recruit the top guys like we’re used to getting. Obviously we can’t go toe to toe with the $ schools like Michigan or Texas for every single player.
But what we can do is single out a few guys each cycle that we really really like and at premium positions and focus in on them and go get them.
If Cade were to leave today… we’re in serious trouble at the most important position on the field. That day is coming within the next year and what do we have? Vizzina? He’s not it and the staff knows it to. Tait Reynolds is not a guy that’s going to be ready day 1 so we’re in serious trouble at the QB spot after Cade unless we do something over the next year.
I don’t like it anymore than anyone else but if you want to truly compete… you got to have the 5 star guys and the blue chip recruits that’s just the way it is. And to get those 5 star and blue chip guys… you have to pay up front. Again… that’s just the way it is period.

Interesting how you phrase that. As if the pro portal people said Dabo will never use the portal.
Let me be clear I am not pro portal. I hate the portal and I hate NIL. I think it has ruined college football. At the same time, I understand that it is here now, and there is no changing it for the foreseeable future. I look at the portal as a resource that can be used and should be used if it benefits the team. I think we can all clearly see that a few portal players in the past few years would have helped us in certain areas. So yes, I have been hopeful that Dabo would eventually realize that we need to utilize that resource.
Dabo was trying to stick to his morals and do things the way he originally developed a national championship team. He wanted to recruit high school players and develop them. Well, unfortunately, now these players are using the portal to get out of Clemson when they don’t have enough playing time. Then we turn around and go get more high school players to replace them. Didn’t make much sense to me. You lose quality experience depth, and you replace with inexperienced freshman. I think the smart thing to do would be to replace them with quality experience depth. I’m never calling Dabo an idiot for not using the portal. I get why he didn’t use it. I just always hope he would eventually realize that it is something that we inevitably have to use.
