Swinney agonizes over the five plays that cost the Tigers a championship
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney doesn’t hesitate to tell his players or the media that five plays each game usually dictate who wins and who loses, and it didn’t take Swinney long to find the five plays that cost the Tigers the National Championship against Alabama in January. And those plays probably aren't the ones that come to the minds of fans. Full Story » |

Our safeties went pro but couldn't cover a little used TE. That is what gets me. About guys going pro. They know they are leaving but them they blow it in. A big game and. Somehow, that's supposed to translate to the pros...... Simply you can't do that and if the. NFL scouts would look at intangibles more and final tapes........then I don't those two would have left on that performance. Jayson barely got drafted....silly could have been 1st round material. I would have rather had Korrin Wiggins in the game anyways.

The play in the story is the one where Watson had TE wide open, but only ten yards down the field. easy first down instead of an interception. However, a little more air under the throw and it would have been a TD too.

That was 110% on our safeties....Its really comical because that game alone has somehow propelled OJ Howard to the top of the Mackey Award list....Give me a fckn break...and a new safety at that

You people kill me! He is the same coach who led the team to 14 straight victories during the season to even have a chance to make a few mistakes to lose the NC game. My God, he's not perfect. Let's fire him!

Curious Minds Would Like To Know: "...the five plays"

The article (and HCDS) sort of allude to them, but does not indicate JUST which ones they were (other than that they were NOT 'the kick' or 'the return').

Going to bet that DW4's was the interception in the game. Alabama scored a touchdown on that next drive.

Guess on 3 more of them would be:
2) Whoever made the mistake on the edge or mid-field coverage/angling that allowed Henry's 50 yard TD run in the 1st quarter
3) The blown coverage by TJ Green on TE OJ Howard in the 3rd quarter that ended up a 53 yard TD pass.
4) The blown coverage by either Green or Tankersley (due to confusion) on TE OJ Howard again the drive after the onside kick that allowed a 51 yard TD pass.

Also, that little flip to Howard? on Alabama's final drive that got them all the way down the field and then Henry scored the clincher. Still can't understand why he was able to make it all away around the edge and cut upfield without being touched.

The loss of Mackensie Alexander, I think that was the most critical injury that could have happen to our defense in that game. Without that loss, I believe he stops at least one of those if not both down the sideline TD's, and we win that game.

Not to mention that wouldve been a TD for us because Renfrow had a B line that he wouldve scored off of had he caught it. Things happen though & the what if's will torture you if you dwell on them

Here's two that come to mind right off. Henry's long TD run and Deshaun's interception. I haven't had the stomach to rewatch the game to recall some others.

Watson's pick and the 2 TD's to the TE would be 3 I think. Minus the on-sides kick & run back idk. My point if u take away any one of those plays we win but Bama had to have ALL of them to beat us. The worst part is how did we let that happen

C'mon Chris! You're Being JUST as Snarky as GWP!

[ in reply to Re: Exactly bob, Dabo's public quotes the last couple days ] |

Actually, @Topher, I'll bet most in this thread disagree with @GWPTiger - and I think he is just stirring the pot ('GWP' is probably a Latin phrase meaning just that. Sure wish my ol' EE Prof - Dr. Martin - were around, he was always laying Latin phrases on us and could set me straight.... Noto Bene?! ).
But to come on here and say we ALL (your words being 'you guys') want to can Dabo is disingenuous, just like saying Dabo thinks it was funny to have lost the Natty because he isn't moaning and groaning and crying about it (still)...
I personally think there's some good observations here - ESPECIALLY concerning an article about 'The Five Plays That..." - and then we are NOT told what HCDS says they are!
Dabo is as good as we've ever had, and I'm of the opinion when he goes, it will be HIS choice, not Clemsons'. And I'm pretty damb optimistic about HIM leading us to natty # 2, also.
But me (and probably a LOT more folks on tnet) still enjoy speaking AND hearing our opinions on various topics, even if we disagree OR don't like them. But it doesn't mean we should "lump 'em all together with generalities or mass condemnation". Just sayin'....
[and I blame THIS rant on my frustration with our current political process and sad state of affairs We The People currently find ourselves in... AIA]

I don't know who you are, but if you know me well enough to know my first name and to know what fraternity I was in at Clemson, then you should also know me well enough to know that I am not targeting the Tigernet public when I say "you guys." I am referring strictly to the poster(s) I am replying to.

Sorry Topher, didn't mean to infer a familiarity or acquaintance. I know two other Tophers that are Christophers. Further, I apologize for MY snarkiness - as I said, the negativity abounds these days and my meter was pegged!
And while we weren't frat brothers, we ARE Clemson Tiger brothers, and I'm sure if I did know you, I would've bought a round or picked up a bar tab, or if you happened by our tailgate - I would be the guy in all orange offering you a cold beverage, a chicken wing (or two) and one of our chairs in the shade!
Bottom line, I'm only here due to my love of all things Clemson, (probably) as are you, and that's what really matters.

I don't believe Topher was lumping everyone on here together at all. It was pretty obvious that he was referring to only the numerous posters who were making negative comments about Dabo and I wholeheartedly agree! It is more than idiotic to even suggest that Dabo should be fired for losing the NC, when he is the same coach who got us there in the first place! He didn't win several Coach of the Year awards for being a poor coach or doing a bad job. Why so much negativity about the most successful football coach we have ever had, including Danny Ford. Danny never won at least 10 games a year 5 years in a row.

Agreed. Dabo is NOT going anywhere. We all saw the game and can figure out why CU lost. Everyone agrees it was 5-7 plays that did it. No use in calling out players at this point. What would it accomplish?

Some of us need to get our head examined on here. Keep Dabo on a "tighter leash"? "Not looking good going into the season"? "Excuse after excuse"? What team were you watching? I saw a team that laid it on the line all year and barely lost to a very worthy opponent at the very end. I didn't hear excuses at all. Reflecting and learning are more like it. That's how you win. One thing winners don't do is start criticizing Dabo really in any way at all at this point. Those 5 plays are reasons why we lost, not excuses for why we lost. Big difference. Sorry to call some of you out on it, but man...
In Dabo I Trust Go Tigers! All In
That said, I'd like to know the five plays as well, but think they are the ones already mentioned on here by my best guess.

My list includes The Injury and special teams play. But then again I'm retired and even if not, nobody's lining up to ask me to coach anybody. I'm just really proud to be a Tiger and see our student athletes doing so well!

I promise there is no one that hates we lost more than I but he got us here and to think we might need someone else sounds like the Carolina fans.

No kidding Coach - We conceded Special Teams all season

Worked against inferior competition all season which was almost everyone we played ... just not Bammer. Players were equal. Tigers may have had an edge. We were flat out outcoached. Does not happen often. Lesson learned: attempt to improve and control Special Teams with best players on the field in 2016.

So, Saban was outcoached at the end of the Iron Bowl in 2013

when Awbarn ran the field goal attempt back? No, just goes to show that even the supposed greatest coach of all in college football wasn't prepared for EVERY eventuality. Dabo is fixing problems as they continue to repeat, and he will fix Special Teams for the most part. Sometimes you have to give credit to the other guy. Saban called the onsides kick at the absolute perfect time in the game, and out of desperation as he himself admitted.
ps, Reactions to the end of that game out on Youtube are still the funniest stuff I have ever seen concerning a football game to this day.

In a couple of the numerous interviews that have been posted on TNET, Dabo said that there were five plays that Alabama could have laid down on the field because Clemson beat themselves in those 5 plays. He elaborated on 2, both to do with DW4. When he showed the video of those 5 plays to the players he wanted them to know that even the best on the field that day made mistakes that were about Clemson and not Alabama. One I remember him mentioning is when the Bama DB fell down and Hunter was wide open.......DW4 overthrew. I can't remember the other one he mentioned. Nowhere have I heard all five as of yet, but I am betting the question will be asked soon.
