Big Ten and SEC eyeing partnership

They’re going to demand 4-5 auto bids for themselves with the last remaining couple of spots to everyone else. It’ll likely get rejected and they’ll break away and form their own league. It is inevitable. This is why Clemson needs out now. Everyone not in the super conference are simply left behind.

Some of you said it was a done deal Clemson going to either the SEC or Big 10. So...where are your sources now? This would be devastating for the ACC, Big 12, or any other team getting their good teams in the playoffs. Recruiting ploy-you play in our conference and there's a good chance you end up in the playoffs. To quote The Animals: "We gotta get outta this place!" Go Tigers!!!!

I still think it happens. I never thought it would happen quickly, but some people got my hopes up. Maybe 5 or 6 years, but I think we are headed for a reorganization of college sports.

The Big 10’s next TV contract will start in 2030. What year are we trying to get the GOR to end in with the proposed settlement. There’s a reason for that.

Will ESECPN allow this? They have a vested interest in both the ACC and SEC. Big is connected to Fox. TV deals will also dictate this whether they like it or not. And if they go to 2 conferences I believe they will have to take the blue bloods from the ACC and Big 12

Let them break away and ruin a good thing over being entitled babies. That’s the opposite of competition, they don’t want anything to be decided on the field.

I am all for the super leagues: 7 + 1 conferences of 10 teams each, 1 conference being the (forget the word for changing every year based on performance) where we get competitive balance and the end of conference headquarters employees.

I’m surprised to see universities act like this, pretty effing appalling.

All fine and good as long you can be competitive in said "super conference". If you turn out to be a mid-pack team, then what?

If they form their own league pthat will be the end of any legit Championship

Yes they would hold most of the legit talent, but no nearly all of it. You can label yourself Champs but without a playoff that includes at least representatives of the best from the rest, your just crowning your league champion and naming them CHAMPS.

There are already things that are beginning to ruin College Football, this will just be another nail in the coffin.

I'm curious. What kind of kind of mind altering substances lead one to insist on things that are so patently false?

It's jot going to be popular in the long run, when they cut off too many fan bases. College football is still built on regional fan bases. If you drop too many school from the top tier (a la Washington St. and Oregon St.), too many fans will lose interest, and this popularly you are mentioning will dissipate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably not to Wash St and Oregon St fans and alumni.

I hear you and maybe ruin is the wrong term but right now it is hurting more than helping. My thoughts IMHO:

1) The NIL and transfer portal have no controls
2) Not having a formal process, however vague and changing it was in the past, makes it difficult to crown a proper champion.
3) If the SEC and Big Ten separate from the rest of the BCS they will have effectively created a new division.
4) This would be fine if they were all the best teams. But a look at the last 10-20 Champions would say otherwise.
5) Stretching Conferences across the country does a disservice to the student athlete and possibly loss of some of the conference traditions.

I'm okay with change. I've been around awhile and seen lots of conference changes. We may lose some of our favorite match ups but others will become and thrive. Heck bring on the NIL and the Playoffs and let the colleges pay for play. Just bring controls. Make it as much as the NFL as you like. We will still have the traditions and rivalries that exist. They athletes will still be less mature and develop in front our eyes before heading to the NFL.

I truly believe the lack of controls and stretching conferences across the country are doing more harm than good right now. But this to shall pass and it will become just a different form a college football that we will have to get used to.

Finally, I will still watch it, love it and reminisce about the way it was then I was young!

ESPN needs the ACC and Big12 to fill content gaps across the platforms during the regular season. They have no motivation to protect playoff spots for anyone besides the P2. Yes, Fox has invested in the Big10, but ESPN itself benefits from Big10 bluebloods during the CFP for max tv ratings. They gain nothing by advocating beyond Clemson, FSU, and probably Miami reaching the playoffs. Leaving spots for two of those three is fine with them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Major League baseball and NBA disagree with you.

There are other leagues across the world that play competitive baseball and hoops equivalent to G5 vs P5 today. They aren't included in the playoffs.

NBA is World Champion. MLB is World Series.

12 game schedule.

9 game conference schedule.
2 games with the other conference.
1 game free to choose. (UF can play FSU, Coots can play Clemson, etc.)

Also note they are talking about 4 automatic bids for each conference, and talking about "making it more objective" rather than letting a committee pick the teams. (Anybody remember when computers picked the top 2 teams?)

All the more reason for FSU and Clemson to get out of ACC and into the P2 quickly.

This is sad and a shame that the presidents of the BiG and SEC schools are willing to shaft the rest of the teams outside their conferences. SEC doesn't surprise me but B1g does. I fully understand ESPN because all they really care about is ratings and the money they feel they will get tighter control over. i wish the NCAA could just adopt an NFL like formula with top 64 programs regardless of conference. And have no conference ties or automatic playoff bids.

would not bother me at all if Clemson joined with other non-SEC and non-Big Ten teams and said "Forget it...you guys do you and we'll do us." I realize that will probably mean less money but if we are completely separate from them, who cares?

No need to argue...I know it isn't happening and I know a lot of Clemson fans/alumni put a lot of value in us playing "college" football at the highest revenue level.

Would this be legal? I am no lawyer, but it feels like there should be some sort of legal issues here. Maybe collusion to control the market or forming a monopoly / duopoly to stifle competition.

TV money and NIL will make it so at least 8 of the best 12 teams in the country will be B1G or SEC. Each and every year. The two conferences are looking ahead to the inevitable. If you look at the polls right now, 12/13 top teams are B1G/SEC. Only exception is Miami at #8. The gap between the two conferences from everyone else will continue widening as the revenue disparity grows.

One could make a counterpoint that guaranteeing each conference 4 teams in the playoffs won't be necessary. However, I read somewhere their goal is to completely eliminate the CFP Selection Committee and remove all subjectivity from the process. Each of them gets 4, ACC and Big 12 get one each, Group of Five gets one and Notre Dame gets the final slot (with some conditions)

It's a very hard pill to swallow but I do understand where the two conferences are coming from. As the years go by, it will become more obvious.

UNC and UVA are the biggest targets from the ACC, not Clemson and FSU. TV market eyeballs and alumni are more coveted by the two big conferences than past football tradition.

Last thing: Notre Dame's very large, outlier influence on things will decline in coming years and they will be forced to join the B1G by 2030 or have their legs cut off. I just can't see them choosing the SEC under any circumstances.
