In all honesty what is it and why can’t we at least try to be somewhat competitive with NIL?

He wants to develop the guys that he recruits. Fairly simple.

He does want to develop his guys on the field, but also off of the field and part of that is having an emphasis on graduation/Paw Journey. In Dabo's mind, and what college athletics started out as, is that college athletics is a tool used in the development of the character and education of the athlete, not a professional farm league for the NFL/MLB/NBA etc.
Serve their hearts, not their talents as Dabo has put it. Sadly money has changed all of this and the NCAA and greed has perverted the intent of scholarships. There are no longer student-athletes, and some would argue it has been that way at most places for some time. Dabo will either need to change or be forced out over time. This is the main reason why Saban left when and the way he did. Sad really what the sport has become.
The aversion to NIL usage is basically due to the fact that Dabo feels you should go to a school based on if that place is going to develop you as a man, not just as a player, and not based on how much money you will make.

They just have lower ceilings and are transferring out before they can prove it on the field. They are also developing as young men in other areas like educationally...none of what I said translates to wins on the field, but I do believe they are developing in a sense. All the stuff that used to matter before NIL and the portal. Now it is how much money can you make and how much exposure can you get so you can get to the league.

from the get go present a $ offer that they were offered by another school and they shop that offer to Clemson and other schools that are pursuing them and tell them to beat that offer. Dabo has said that he doesn't want to play that game but honestly I believe that all decent transfer players are now doing this and that thinking is going to have to change.

Tampering is real, and rampant, but hard to prove. Add to this that the NCAA wont or cant do anything about it even if they find out about it....so....it is going to continue to be rampant.

He has outlined numerous times how the staff evaluates current talent on the roster vs what is available in the portal. There are times the staff likes what they already have, and there are times they feel the portal option is needed. Sometimes they land the portal players they target, sometimes they don’t.

Dabo was talked into going after 3 O linemen, thanks to Luke. They went elsewhere. Other than Bear Bryant’s great grandson who is the 4th string QB, who have they “landed”?

Dabo says he will and does look into the portal, but it seems like lip service when no meaningful talent is acquired from it. Anyone could look at our roster at the end of last year and tell you we had a problem with numbers at OL. Dabo and Luke went into the portal, tried to bring in 3 OL and failed to bring in any of them. They did sign a few late HS recruits, but none of those guys were going to contribute right away and we needed help at OL right then, and it did not come for whatever reason.
Similar to OL, we had issues with depth at DE and LB. None of those were addressed with the portal either. So it is hard for the average fan sitting on the outside looking in, to not feel frustrated and feel like Dabo is only paying lip service to portal usage when we only get Hunter Johnson's year after year, when we need so much more.

Francis, long time. Good to see you're alive and well.
What you stated has some merit, in the fact that he was quoted as saying that. The question I think most of us have is how strongly he dislikes the way cfb has changed, i.e paying student athletes, who are already afforded much more than a student on scholarship. I did a quick calculation once and came up with about a million dollars per player over 4 years with housing, dietcians etc.
I did hear something about the way IPTAY was structured and that changes were coming after this season that would allow more money for NIL. IPTAY was #3 nationally in donations in 2023, behind only the oil money being aTm and Texas. So, even with the disparity in conference payouts, it's not a money issue.
Personally, I wish it would have stayed the way it was. We all knew players were getting benefits in one form or another, far beyonst a $100 handshake.
We'll see what happens this off-season. We are going to have to play the game to return to Top 5 status.

I don’t disagree with anything you said. What gets tiring is when people constantly put things out there that are wrong. The internet is there, all they have to do is look up info for themselves. Anyway, here’s to Dabo and Co. finishing the season strong and having a successful year.
Take care buddy.

I'm doing well sir, thanks for asking!
DSP ever resurface? I always enjoyed his posts, he's quite the wordsmith, however it's as if he joins and donates just to get banned? Duality in nature perhaps, maybe he's one of Crumps clones?
Totally agree with your response. Afterall, it is Tigernet.
This team is good, I think overall the coaching has been outstanding this year with the talent we have. Play calling has been questionable, as that's been one of the few downfalls under Dabo's watch. OL play has been great! Luke has been a huge upgrade! They held SC's all world line to one sack. Mafah has been playing hurt for 3 games - that's not on the OL. We have a very key position player who has lacked smarts in key moments in games. Been that way since day one. I don't care for the 34 being our base defense.
That's me rambling. I said the team was good, with a solid game plan and good decision making by #2 we should beat SMU. Playoffs, I don't think we're currently equipped for a match up against an elite team.
Let's hope for the best from here on out!

I agree, I don't think there's any good reason to insist that Dabo has an actual "aversion" to the portal. Like you said, he's given really straightforward answers on why Clemson hasn't ended up getting transfers - answers that are plenty cogent given his philosophy.
Now, I get that there's disagreement with that philosophy, but that's another matter. Some just translate that philosophy and it's results - too easily - into an supposed "aversion" altogether. It may be fair to say he's not as keen on the portal as other coaches, but not necessarily averse.

We will soon become very competitive with NIL. We are just much more likely to pay guys with experience at the college level versus paying guys w high school experience.

I agree.
This year, he isn’t facing a small-need situation.
LB and DE are glaring needs. I suspect that, to a far more aggressive degree than in previous years, he’s going to pursue those positions and land a player or two.

This is coming from a “who am I to be responding to this” kind of position. However, from reading this board and articles, Dabo may be faced with a more limited amount of NIL funding and is being very careful how it is used. He might see it as keeping the players he knows versus gambling on spending to attain HS players whose college-level abilities are unknown. Now for the portal that guess might not hold up as he can see how they played at other schools. But, again, limited funding might be the reason he can’t “buy” players from there because he is trying to keep his current players happy.

that he doesn't have to spend on bidding wars, in addition to having a current 86 players for an 85-man roster.
Folks seem to think we have some unlimited pool of cash to throw out whenever a shiny object is available. We don't. We have a finite amount and Dabo elects to invest that more in kids we already have in the program that are in various stages of development, while allotting some for new signees as well to keep seeding the program.

I think his aversion aligns closely with mine and most others here from what I can tell.
I always hated the NFL because of all the politics and greed involved, which is what made the college game SO much better.
I am not so naive as to believe things of this nature weren’t happening before this, albeit under the table, but now that it’s all out in the open it’s sickening. And it’s a huge slap in the face to players and coaches who played and coached the game before this happened, when the only way to really make it to the top was to develop who you had and work your @$$ off.
It is becoming NFL Jr. I can’t stand it

I think until recently he felt we had plenty of depth so probably wasn't searching but a few positions. Just my guess
Also this is how I believe he is looking at it based on bits and pieces I have heard him before. First 3 are well documented
1. Most kids (there are over 3k) arent good enough to be on the 2 deep here - Its true 2. Kids who already know where they are going and go in with the no contact tag. Probably were tampered with 3. Bidding wars - this is where this is probably the source of the biggest angst for us fans. But after you whittle down by removing the first 2 they population left is probably not huge. Thus giving the OSU, Mich, ND, etc of the worlds a better shot 4. I don't think he wants a 1yr rental if he can avoid it. So this largely elimates RS SR/SR 5. I don't think he wants kids who are on their 3rd or 4th school, probably because the likelihood that they will just bounce again, leaving us to fill another hole

When Dabo recruits he doesn’t promise anything other than if you come and put the work in you have a chance to do something special at Clemson. To Dip into the portal is going against everything he promises high school recruit. He would have to tell someone, you did everything right, you put the work in, but we are going to use the portal and find a player for your position. I think that conflicts him. Love him or hate him he sticks to his morals and you have to respect that. Dabo has to decide does winning football games matter more than his personal convictions. I think he will tweak his portal use this offseason. I think we get at least 1 highly rated player from the portal this offseason that will make an impact for the team next season.

Dabo made it clear years a few ago that he does not believe in the portal. Now it is crystal clear that the portal does work well in small doses that’s why ALL the elite programs are using it effectively. If dabo starts to use it now he will have to admit he was wrong and his huge ego will not allow him to do that. Thats the facts!

Garbage in - garbage out.
Dabo has never said he doesn't believe in the portal. He has stated that he believes it's ultimately bad for the kids as too many will lose out entirely on the opportunity that a college degree will offer them. He has been correct there.

The portal issue probably has to do with limited spots available.
Clemson doesn't lose a lot through the portal.
However, Clemson has had a habit of offering high school kids late in the cycle. We just did that this year with Jakkarion Kenan. In the past, with guys like Jaheim Lawson, Kobe McCloud, Cole Turner, Josh Sapp, and Myles Oliver.
Perhaps that wasn't the best strategy.

QB we'll bring in in this cycle". Right or wrong - he's not going to break that promise by bringing in a "hired gun" from the portal to start ahead of one of his guys. That wouldn't hold true to his family culture.
Maybe, his pitch now is - "you know the deal, everyone is a free agent every year". Plus, the money is coming.

I think initially Dabo’s take on the portal being only full of guys that are “disruptive to his culture” was probably correct, before the rule changes, it was mostly guys that had some kind of falling out with their coaches or off the field/academic issues etc.
But nowadays a lot of times it is just players looking for more playing time ( Joe Burrow, Justin Fields etc ) or more exposure to NFL scouts, like a guy coming in from a G5 team. I do not automatically assume that every kid in the portal is of poor character or is just out for more NIL money.
And even though we haven’t really utilized the portal to add players, Clemson has still benefited from players being able to leave via portal .
Imagine if DJU was stuck on our roster for the last two years, the amount of distraction that he would cause would surely hurt our “culture”.

More than they’d be making if they had signed with Clemson out of high school
And he doesn’t like the idea of putting that guy ahead of player that paid their dues and waited their turn
He thinks the impact on the culture is detrimental to the program and that if he can’t commit to the players out of high school, how can they commit to him (and Clemson by extension)
He believes that signing guys in the portal will have a negative affect on locker room dynamics and team culture
He’s probably right about most of it all.
Where I differ, is that NIL and scholarship vs non-scholarship dynamics have existed forever and coaches have had to deal with that. Sure this is another wrinkle, but you are going to have coaches and players peeved at how the NIL (or rev share) money gets divided between position groups and individual players regardless of whether they came through the portal or through high school.
Sure the portal creates more complicated dynamics, but I don’t think it creates some step change leap across the rubicon

He gets paid 11 million a year, and has very little accountability. Clemson wandered around in the wilderness for 30 years until he took over and won two national championships. He essentially has a contract for life if he wants it. Why do more work when there are no consequences if you don’t?

He has an 8 million dollar payroll where other teams have 20 million payroll.

I think he barely has enough money to keep his current players, much less go out and pay top dollar for free agents. People may think Dabo is sitting on a big pile of cash he just stubbornly refuses to use because he prefers going 8-4 every season but I don't think that's the case. Don't know why he'd be basically begging for contributions if he had more money than he needed already.
