I'M Just Going To Go Ahead And Say It

Phil Mafah is and has been the better running back. From his first game until now he seems to get 8 yards per carry on average running between the tackles, and that's after receiving contact at the line of scrimmage. This is where I project a tad bit of criticism towards coaches. It seems to me that many times the best player isn't the one who is starting or receiving most of the playing time. It is my firm belief that Clemson has the roster to win a National Championship every season, but for some odd reason the best player isn't the one receiving the majority of the snaps. I could be wrong, but I know what I saw in the Gator Bowl, and I know what I've seen in previous games where an underclassman will enter the game and play significantly better than the starter. Had Deshaun Watson started from the very beginning in 2014, I have no doubt that Clemson would have gone undefeated and won it all. Take for example the season opener against UGA in 2014, Cole Stoudt was the starter and as soon as Deshaun Watson entered the game, he threw a touchdown pass to Charone Peak and made it look easy. Now, I won't take anything away from Cole Stoudt and his performance in the bowl game against Oklahoma, but I hope people get the gist of what I'm trying to say here. In short, I believe that Clemson would have at minimum 2 more national titles if Clemson coaches would have played the better players at certain positions. Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Check the stats and ignore the games when Ship was injured during those games.

You will see that Clemson's best runningback was the guy behind the starter. Mafah got a lot more carries late in the season after Dabo slew the fumble bunny but previous to that Ship fumbled about a third less than Mafah.
Imo, calling one better than the other is subjective at most.

Different runners with different styles and strengths. Mafah is not the receiving threat Shipley is out of the backfield.

The OL, WR, QB group is not of national championship caliber. at least not the last 3 seasons. lets hope for significant improvement at those position groups.
in 2016 and 2018 clemson had the best player in the country at QB and a bunch of NFL caliber WR. At this point there is no comparison to what is currently on the roster at those positions.

Who were the bunch of NFL receivers in those years?

Yes we had Mike Williams in 2016 and Tee Higgins and Ross in 2018. Am I missing the “bunch”?
The key to those national championships was a good defense and a great QB. The OL was about the same or less talent than now. We had a few good receivers, but again without great QBs their names wouldn’t be as well known here.
We need the QB to be great. That’s what’s needed more than anything else.

We haven't had a roster to win the National Championship since

we won it. Maybe, when we played LSU we were close, but lacked it on defense in a few critical positions. That game was fairly evenly matched and we needed a little luck our way but never got it.
For the last four years, we haven't developed players or they haven't developed fast enough to compete at that high level.
We depend on freshman, sometimes they pan out sometimes they don't. We got who we gots.

Chesty, comparing Mafah and Shipley is like trying to compare a Hummer and

a Lamborg-Hiney. They are probably both great vehicles, but appeal to completely different markets, and have completely different strong points. There really is no fair way to make the comparison, since, whenever one got increased carries, it took away from the other one.
I will say, no doubt Mafah is the less volatile of the two!

Mafah whiffs in coverage quite a bit. When the play call is a called RB hand-off or even a called dump-off, Mafah is good. In RPO or even basic pass play, Mafah's blocking leaves a lot to be desired.

This is true.... Easily fixed with proper coaching. I can remember whenever ETN had issues in that area of play.

Shipley was the better overall back, it hard when everyone knows you’re the only weapon.
Mafah came in after the defense was softened up many times too.
Mafah’s potential is better as in running the ball and his size will carry over to the NFL.
We had the best guy who earned it in the game in my opinion,
Mafah definitely got better later in the game as his 235 lbs began to lean on defenses, should have kept running it in bunches of games too.
