Kelly Bryant vs DJU

Sep 7, 2022, 10:55 AM

Me and the boys are in a heated debate between who has had a better career at Clemson and who is the better quarterback in general. I would say KB, but I do think its close. Opinions?

Id take KB over DJ if those were the 2 options.***

KB has ACC championship and a playoff berth.

KB, tho he maxed out his potential on where he was and Dabo knew that. I think DJ still has the potential to be better, just don't know if he'll ever get there.

KB also had a much better O-Line and WRs

There's more to being successful at QB than just the QB. Surround an average QB with a great cast, and he looks like a great QB. Do the reverse - surround a great QB with an average cast, and he looks like an average QB. Not saying that DJ is great, but last year he didn't have much around him in the way of experience and it's only a little better this year. KB had a lot better cast around him than DJ has had.

Those variables have to be considered when you're comparing those two QBs.

Maybe our offensive line, wide receivers and running backs

and play calling were/are better than you think.

It looked to me like DJ had time to throw the ball, but offensive lines break down and receivers drop passes. It happens to everybody, but is magnified by the inefficiency of the QB.

He's not decisive and that certainly compounds things.

D4W, Trevor, and even Kelly Bryant were more decisive. Add to the fact that they were all extremely mobile and DJ isn't then add the fact that our WR's aren't as crisp as they used to be and you come to the obvious conclusion.

Up 'till this point, I think it's fair to say Kelly Bryant was more effective. I don't have his stats in front of me, but am pretty sure his stat line would support that opinion.

Also, Kelly Bryant made the offensive line look better than it really was because he was extremely mobile, and so was D4W, as was Trevor.

2017 kelly bryant

2017: One of 11 finalists for the Manning Award … one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award … was 262-398 passing for 2,802 yards and 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions in 886 snaps over 14 games (14 starts) … completed 65.8 percent of his passes and had a 131.7 pass efficiency rating … had 665 yards and 11 touchdowns on 192 carries …

Bryant. No question about it.***

Each player's statline for their one full season as starting QB:

Kelly B:
14 games, 65.8%, 3467 total yards, 24 total TD's, 8 INT's, 131.7 QBR

DJU:
13 games, 55.6%, 2554 total yards, 13 total TD's, 10 INT's, 108.7 QBR

Most, myself included, wanted Trevor to take the reigns in 2018. IMO, that didn't mean Kelly was a subpar QB. Kelly Bryant was solid and very efficient. Trevor was just the better player.
I believe that history will show similar results with the current QB debate as I think Cade is a superior talent based on the small sample size we have been provided.
To answer the question: I'm taking Kelly B all day over DJ. Go Tigers!

This isn't even a discussion. We make the playoffs and possibly the NCG with Kelly Bryant last year.

I wouldn't say it's close. DJ has all the potential to be a great pocket passer. If he transfers away, I could easily see him finding a home elsewhere and being a stud. But we do not have a good offensive coordinator (and Dabo's not an offensive mastermind). We can't rebuild our offense based on our personnel like the offensive greats can. Streeter and Dabo are going to stick with our weird little RPO thing we do. And for that, DJ is a square peg in a round hole.

Kelly Bryant was obviously too bad of a passer to defeat the great teams vertically, so even when others here were calling him a Heisman contender, I wanted to give others like Chase Brice and Hunter Johnson a shot, because I thought they posed more of a threat to Bama. But at the end of the day, Kelly Bryant was a round peg for the round hole.

For this year, who would I take? DJ hasn't shown he can attack teams deeper either, so I think if we're going to be pigheaded and not start Cade, then we should play whomever offers us the best chance of getting to the playoffs. If we miss the playoffs again, that, along with NIL, is going to cause the media to give a narrative that we are no longer elite. If every talking head has that narrative, kids will believe it. So for this year, I'd take Kelly Bryant. I think with Bryant, we'd get stomped by Alabama or Georgia, but I think he would get us in the game. DJ is improved (which, statistically, he went from like #103 last year to #77 so far this year), but he hasn't improved enough to give me confidence against some of our opponents.
