Instant Analysis: Clemson claims long-awaited 'Power' home victory over Florida State |
CLEMSON - Victory, at last.
Clemson welcomed Florida State into town in what is likely the final primetime game of the season, and snapped a streak that sends shivers down any Tiger fan's spine. A year of losing to P4 competition was snapped against the Seminoles, with the Tigers moving to 4-5 on the season with a 24-10 victory under the Saturday night lights. Offensive player of the game - Antonio Williams continues to make big plays for the Tigers. Clemson's top wideout, coming off a season-best outing against Duke, did just enough to give his team a cushion against Florida State. On the Tigers' second touchdown of the day, Cade Klubnik lobbed a ball to the end zone, and Williams did the rest. He leaped up for a contested score over a Seminole defender and won that battle to put the Tigers up 15 early in the first half. Williams finished with five catches for 62 yards on the night, putting together another solid performance in front of the home crowd. Defensive player of the game Avieon Terrell raced to the student section as the fireworks were shot off close to kickoff. The energy from him was clear, and it was evident this was a game he wanted badly. It isn't often that your defensive back leads the team in sacks. Terrell did just that on Saturday night, crashing the Florida State line of scrimmage for two sacks, while also holding the Seminole passing game in check. Clemson's lockdown corner might have played in his final primetime game at Death Valley, and he made sure it was a memorable one. Stat of the game - Clemson had one last shot to get it done, and got it done. Tiger fans have waited for quite some time for the lengthy losing streak against P4 competition at home to end. Against Florida State, that streak was finally snapped. Clemson's season will be historic for all the wrong reasons, but in the case of home losses to conference/P4 competition, that will be put to rest. Moments that mattered - Clemson held firm control of the first half for the most part. The Tigers took the opening drive to the house, with Cade Klubnik gliding in for the opening score. Florida State appeared primed for a response, only for a bad exchange in the red zone to cost Florida State points. That wouldn't be the first time the Seminoles shot themselves in the foot. Clemson extended its lead to 18 before Florida State found the end zone, with Tommy Castellanos' scramble to the red zone setting up a seven-yard LaWayne McCoy touchdown with under a minute to play in the first half. Momentum appeared to be on Florida State's side, with the offense scurrying down the field to cut the lead to one score. Avieon Terrell had different plans, securing a sack off a cornerback blitz, leading to a missed field goal try by the Seminoles. Clemson and Florida State traded field goals in the second half, with the Tigers controlling the second half, and their two-score lead. The Seminoles had one last chance down 14 with a little bit over two minutes to play, but Ricardo Jones sealed the victory with a tipped interception. Next up - Clemson travels to Louisville for a Friday night clash with the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
