WATCH: Former Clemson DT story featured in Super Bowl ad campaign

by -

Former Clemson defensive tackle Carlos Watkins told his emotional story in a Super Bowl ad campaign dedicated to first responders.

While playing with Clemson in 2013, the Houston Texans defender was involved in a fatal car accident as a passenger near his hometown of Mooresboro, North Carolina. Watkins' childhood friend Dache Gossett died after being ejected and having the car roll over him after it hydroplaned in rainy conditions and struck a power pole.

Watkins would redshirt the rest of that season in recovery after having hematomas in each leg after being trapped inside the car underneath the power pole for two hours. Watkins went on to earn first-team All-American honors before being selected in the fifth round by the Texans.
