Clemson suffers three ejections in heartbreaker loss to Florida |
Clemson had a total of three ejections in an 11-10 loss to Florida Sunday, which ended Clemson's season with a 2-0 Gators' Super Regional victory.
First up was infielder Jack Crighton. From our game story: "Things took an emotional turn in the second. Jack Crighton doubled to left-center with two out, and Nolan Nawrocki came to the plate. Nawrocki’s excuse me swing rolled up the first base line and Caglianone fielded the ball in the base line and collided with Nawrocki. Caglianone shoved Nawrocki and players came off of both benches. Order was restored, and after a lengthy review, the umpires tossed Crighton, who ran over from third to help his teammate. The stadium exploded in anger and boo birds rained down on the umpires and anyone wearing Florida colors. Only player to be thrown out was Jack Crighton #3 who was rounding third and not in the initial contact. Both benches warned that’s all🤔 pic.twitter.com/rfwJ0twt0G The NCAA explanation at the time was that both benches received unsportsmanlike warnings, and Crighton was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. Per Randy Bruns, NCAA Baseball Secretary-Rules Editor on Jack Crighton ejection: pic.twitter.com/3Or0jrKbwt After Alden Mathes' go-ahead homer in the 13th inning, head coach Erik Bakich and mentor and legendary former Tigers coach Jack Leggett were up next for ejections: Alden Mathes, 0-for-6 on the day, turned a two-out fastball around for a long homer to right, putting the Tigers ahead 10-9. Then all you know what erupted, and along the way, Bakich and Jack Leggett were ejected. From the broadcast: Erik Bakich and Jack Leggett were BOTH ejected. They will be suspended for two games. Mathes was not ejected pic.twitter.com/OQO6jngi64 Moments after getting tossed out of the game, check out head coach Erik Bakich firing up the capacity crowd at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. No NCAA explanation on the Leggett and Bakich ejections had come as of the posting of this update. Some clarification...Mathes slammed his bat down but did it towards the Clemson dugout. He was warned by the ump, which set Leggett off because everybody saw Caglianone do it and not get a warning. When the Tigers play next season, both Bakich and Leggett will be suspended for two games, and Crighton will have to miss one game. Clemson opens next season in Arlington, Texas at Global Life Field in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown from Feb. 14-16 with Arizona, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and Texas.
Wow!
What a scene as the Tigers try to keep their season alive.
