ESPN lists Wilkins as a 2017 Heisman candidate |
ESPN released their latest article listing
five defensive players who could win the Heisman Trophy in 2017 and Clemson defensive lineman Christian Wilkins was included on the list.
"Few defensive linemen accomplish more in their first two college seasons than Wilkins has at Clemson," ESPN.com said. "He's always visible for the Tigers, whether he's pressuring quarterbacks or chasing down running backs or catching fake punt passes in a CFP semifinal, as he did against Oklahoma last season. Wilkins also has the requisite personality and profile to make Heisman voters aware of his presence. He appears on four special-teams units and should see an occasional role on offense." Wilkins was a first-team All-American as a sophomore defensive end as he had 48 tackles including 13.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 20 quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries, and 10 passes broken up. He also caught a touchdown pass, had one blocked kick, and one rush for 10 yards in 2016. The other defensive players on the 2017 Heisman candidate list included Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Florida State safety Derwin James, LSU defensive end Arden Key, and Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver.
