Gamecock AD addresses students throwing objects at Clemson players |
The Palmetto Bowl featuring Clemson and South Carolina turned into an embarrassing beatdown at William-Brice Stadium as the Tigers won easily 34-10 on Saturday night.
However, to make matters worse for Gamecock fans and their administration, their students were seen throwing various objects on the field towards the direction of Clemson players during the game. The public address announcer appealed to the students to stop multiple times as the classless behavior was being showcased on national television. The middle fingers were also out in full force throughout the evening. South Carolina Athletic Director Ray Tanner had the following comments after the game about the fan behavior. “The only thing I can tell you, throwing anything from the stands is unacceptable,” Tanner said via SEC Country. “That behavior is intolerable and it’s very few people that you’re talking about. It’s unacceptable behavior.” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney showed his frustration about the bottle throwing as he received an unsportsmanlike penalty late in the second quarter. Swinney lost his cool after a coke bottle was thrown at Hunter Renfrow in the endzone after his short touchdown pass from Kelly Bryant. Swinney was visibly upset during a halftime interview with ESPN's Holly Rowe. "I didn't know it was in the rules to throw stuff in the stands," Swinney said. "I didn't know that was part of the game. That is about the tenth time. I am just trying to protect my players. If they don't control it, what we gonna do? That's all I'm trying to say. That's on me for losing my poise and my cool but that's an embarrassment. These people are better than that. That is just a few people here. It's just not the majority of these South Carolina people. That's an embarrassing situation right there and that's how someone gets hurt."
