Question for Baseball experts. Braves just had men on 1st

Jul 2, 2009, 7:54 PM

and 3rd with no outs. Then, bases loaded with one out.

Why would you not bunt somewhere in there?

Bunt to get a man from second to third.***

Because there were no out and 2 on, that gives you 2

Jul 2, 2009, 8:15 PM

chances for a sac fly to score, and if you hit into double play man on third will still score.

If you bunt the guy to second, they could walk bases loaded, get a ground ball, double play, inning over no runs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, if you bunt down the first base line, the runner won't

Jul 2, 2009, 8:17 PM

score?

That is Clemsonspeak pointing out that your comment was a little rude.

Also, FWIW....

My father was a Citadel grad, I am a Clemson grad. I highly respect you guys, but you are a little rough around the edges. Must be the hazing.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would like to see the stats on this. I would tend to bunt

Jul 2, 2009, 8:24 PM

but I think the reasoning goes like this:

A well executed bunt gets a run, but guarantees an out. Plus, if not well executed it could be an out at the plate.

You've got the issue of the runner on third having to go with the pitch and what happens if the ball is not on the ground, but I tend to trust the bunter and I like to put pressure on the defense. Waiting on a hit seems to lead to trouble.

A 250 hitter should produce a 50/50 chance of a run, with half of that chance being a hit (you get the run without an out). My reasoning here is that 250 hitter has a 25% chance of a hit plus the chance of hitting a fly. On the other hand we've all seen the rally killer, the dreaded double play.

So, men on 1st and 3rd, I say bunt. Man on 3rd, 1st and 2nd open, swing away. Fans don't like small ball in the pros, however.

This worked well in my Colt League coaching days, but might not translate to pros in the way I just outlined.

A professional hitter is expected to hit sac fly worst case

Jul 3, 2009, 12:05 AM

and by swinging you have a chance for a big inning. Bunting may or may not get the run in but is pretty much a guaranteed out. Then you have 2 down with a man on 2nd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

99% of the time you bunt to get a guy to either 2nd or 3rd.***

Jul 2, 2009, 9:14 PM

will probably score hit. I don't like bunting to get a man to third under any circumstances.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's the % play with no outs. Then most grounders to

Jul 2, 2009, 9:24 PM

the infield or medium range flyouts to the OF, get him home with one out. Still, it depends on the game.

If the Braves could freakin' bunt, there might be an answer

Jul 2, 2009, 8:56 PM

to that question. Annually one of the worst bunting teams in the majors--although I'll admit they've done a bit better this year

that's because they have the worst manager in MLB.....***

Jul 3, 2009, 9:32 AM

Do you know anything about baseball??? When's the last time you saw the pay rolls of NY and Philly? Pretty nice job Bobby is doing with a miniscule pay roll having his team near 1st place huh? HOF coach Cox sure is doing a lousy job indeed. Ever thought what it would be like to have the luxury for him to boost his payroll 150 million more dollars? Stop being ignorant.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1st and 3rd maybe, but never bunt w/ bases loaded

Jul 2, 2009, 10:21 PM

a squeeze bunt w/ runners on 1st and 3rd is a possibility. you never bunt w/ bases loaded b/c there is a force out at home plate.
