New Traditions at Clemson! What would you like to see?

Jul 8, 2007, 12:09 PM

I think it would be cool to have flag poles, say 12 in a row. We put up a flag of each school we play in football that year. The teams we beat are lowered to half mast and the teams that beat us we keep up or just take them down all together. I saw this at a small college once and thought it was sort of cool.

We're not USC

Jul 8, 2007, 12:16 PM

I've never been fond of the "new traditions" thing. Traditions shouldn't be "created," per se. They should just happen.

Why do we run down the hill? Because, well, it was there. It was an easy entrance.

Why do we rub Howard's Rock? Because he got sick of seeing it in his office.

USC is always sitting around saying, "What tradition can we create?" 2001 being played during their entrance was staged. That stupid chicken they just got last year was there just because they all of the sudden thought it was cool. They want to make playing a song between the 3rd and 4th quarters a tradition just because Florida does something similar.

Traditions are something that should develop naturally, unlike what most schools do. I'm happy with what we've got now.

Why concoct "new traditions"?...

Jul 8, 2007, 12:22 PM

I think Clemson's traditions are fine like they are. Flag poles for the 12 ACC schools are already in place, and those are the only ones Clemson needs, should they decide to put the schools on those poles. I like what's on them now.

First of all, the FSU band has had a tradition in the last few years of playing opponents fight songs once during the half time (or maybe pre-game - I forget which) show as a show of good sportsmanship as the host). I sort of like that. I don't know that we should copy that, but I wouldn't mind us taking a page out of their book so to speak for the Virginia Tech game this year - as a show of good sportsmanship and respect and support for them in light of the shootings at their campus in April.

Secondly, I never liked the whole deal about flags of other teams in the stadium. That seems so much more like a baseball thing - it just doesn't work for football somehow in my opinion. But in the end I don't mind it that much for most of our conference foes - it's just the Miami one that annoys me. I can handle having a Wake or an FSU flag up there, but the Miami one just -- uggh! At the very least we should take down the Miami one and put up something that is not quite as closely associated with thuggery - like a Soviet or Nazi flag. I'm exaggerating, of course, but still - Miami? Couldn't we just have another flag up there that says "logo not available" ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oklahoma does that in pre-game for any team that

Jul 8, 2007, 2:24 PM

doesn't bring their band. It's ridiculous, and NOT something I'd like to see Clemson start.

Now, for VT, as a one-time deal...go ahead. But don't start doing it for everyone, please.

I wasn't thinking really inside the stadium, just somewhere near the stadium. I think the tombstone thing is really cool, but not many people see that.

I can remember the UNC band doing that one as far back as 1991. While it's kind of nice...kind of...it's not exactly something I'd jump up and down about.

And personally, as a former Tiger Band member, the day I had to play Carolina's fight song is the day I would vomit into my instrument. So to that end, no, I'd very much NOT like our band to play opponent's fight songs. That's sheer torture to the musicians for whom fight songs are a lifeblood.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think everyone who has a ticket on the top row of one of

seeing families with their children at Tigertown...esp. the sweet little girls dressed as cheerleaders with their faces painted on gameday. I took my Daughter as a child...enjoyed seeing her having fun & excitement very much. I hope Tiger families will always be a tradition at Clemson. Tickets will be more expensive and perhaps more difficult for large families next year...many kudos to Tiger fans that can afford tics for all their little fans & continue this tradition. Go Tigers!!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm with you on that but I see it ebbing away.

Jul 8, 2007, 5:48 PM

I don't see nearly as much of it as I used to. I think it is partly because of the cost and also the game times. Night games are just not for young children where they have to sit around all day at a tailgate party while the adults are eating, drinking, watching TV, getting drunk etc. Clemson is still the friendliest place I know of for children to attend football games but the times are a changing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point Frogman...

Jul 8, 2007, 7:41 PM

game times are taking their toll on the little fans & Tigertown will miss a great tradition soon.

I've always thought it'd be cool for the busses to drop off the team on Perimeter Rd at the entrance to one of the Parking Lots and have them walk through the crowd to the stadium rather than drop them off right at the gate. Not a long walk though....
