Top 25 National Programs for the last quarter of a century.

May 3, 2006, 7:53 AM

Here are the winningest MAJOR college football programs over the past 25 years. (I've left out some programs like Marshall and Boise State because for most of the years covered, they were clearly not MAJOR Div 1 schools.)

1. Miami-Florida 0.81731 255 57 0 312
2 Nebraska 0.81269 262 60 1 323
3 Florida State 0.79624 252 63 4 319
4 Michigan 0.75237 236 76 5 317
5 Ohio State 0.73659 231 81 5 317
6 Florida 0.73186 230 83 4 317
7 Tennessee 0.73028 228 82 7 317
8 Penn State 0.71565 223 88 2 313
9t Georgia 0.71406 221 87 5 313
9t Oklahoma 0.71406 221 87 5 313
11 Auburn 0.69516 213 92 5 310
12 Texas 0.69329 215 94 4 313
13 Brigham Young 0.68997 226 101 2 329
14 Clemson 0.66938 203 99 5 307
15 Notre Dame 0.66452 204 102 4 310
16 Southern Cal 0.66401 205 102 7 314
17 Alabama 0.66139 208 106 2 316
18 Virginia Tech 0.65961 201 103 3 307
19 Texas A&M 0.65756 203 105 3 311
20 Washington 0.65747 201 104 3 308
21 UCLA 0.64379 194 106 6 306
22 West Virginia 0.61889 188 115 4 307
23 Southern Miss 0.61000 182 116 2 300
24 Iowa 0.60897 187 119 6 312
25 Louisiana State 0.60784 183 117 6 306

Over the past 25 years, Clemson won a half dozen conference titles and one national title. The Tigers played in 18 bowls and won 10 of them. We've been ranked in the top 20 in home attendance throughout this time frame. We've only had 3 losing seasons. We won ten games or more 5 times, and we've had 6 nine game winning seasons.

By any reasonable measure, The Clemson Tigers have been a solid, first tier, top twenty five football program for a quarter of a century.

I'd love to see the Tigers climb this ranking chart over the next five years. To do so, we need to post some ten game winners, win a conference crown or two and add another national title to our resume. I think we have a shot at it.

Go Tigers!!

Harley, check your figures. I don't see S. Carolina....

...on that list. And clearly, with their 3 marginally successful seasons in the last 25 years, they should be on this list. What with having had Lou Holtz as a coach for 6 of those 25 years, one would expect them to be near the top of that list.

I'm afraid I can't believe anything you say anymore.

Minor point

By the same calculus, South Carolina ranks 51st nationally. They've won zero conference or national titles over the past twenty-five years. The Gamecocks are 3-5 in bowl games. They posted 1 ten game winner and 1 nine game winner. The Gamecocks once went 0-11. They've had 13 losing seasons. The Gamecocks have clearly been a 3rd tier program through the past 25 years. Since 1980, USC has 6 wins against the Tigers.

Despite it all, the Gamecocks have a loyal fan base and have ranked in the top 20 in terms of attendance through this time frame.

Excellent work HArley.....

living in Atlanta I often get the blah blah blah from the UGA crowd about Clemson not being a real power like they are...well, now I have the facts to show them how we have been a top 25 program. I hope we can get on a 5 year roll like they have under Richt and start competing for some league titles again.

Look at the 3 Florida schools...

It sure pays to be located in the sunshine state for college football.

It's also interesting that Auburn is above Bama. I'm sure the Bama crowd doesn't like being 2nd fiddle in their state. Who woulda thunk that?

would be more intersting to see the past 10 years

not that USC would have been good during that time.

But it is probably a more accurate analysis of who has the best chances to continue to be big time programs.
