College football entrance's: The Hill, the Crowd, that Roar!

Jan 27, 2006, 9:15 AM

I has having a discussion, last night with a few buddies at a local sports pub about college football entrances. Of course all my friends knew that I was Clemson biased, but I tried to remain objective. I listened to their arguements.

Yes yes yes I agree that FSU's entrance is a staple in College football tradition, and the flaming stick stick in the middle of the field is certainly intimidating, but does that really center around the team.

My other buddy is a VT fan and YES the energy in Lane stadium during the Hokies entrance is amazing. I mean I love Metallica as much has the next Mullet grower, but ..... again ......does this anticipation center around the team?

My arguement was as follows, the energy around Clemson entrance starts WELL before the team runs down the hill. I guess the frenzy really starts when those inside Death Valley hear the sirens of the police Escort as the team travels from the WEZ to the Hill. When the Orange Bowl march starts up the crowd starts to cheer and clap, but we arent cheering and clapping to the song but rather cheering because we know our Tigers are about to step foot ontop of the Hill. When the first Orange helmet appears through the gates, the crowd goes nuts and with each additional player that comes on the Hill the crowd gets louder and louder. The Tiger Rag starts, the cannon is fired and down the Hill they come, but by that time the crowd has been at a deafening roar for several minutes, an 80,000 person mosh pit has already broken out and this lasts until after the first kick off.............

You dont see this at many venues around the NCAA. We dont need a movie or platinum hit song to get us up for the game. We dont need fireworks or some announcer begging for cheers. All we need is just the idea that our team is right around the corner about to play the best game on the planet.

You see Terry , CJ, Marcus, Craig, and many other. You have the oppurtunity to be apart of a culture that lives just to see you excel in teh class room and play the game you love. You have a chance to be fathers to a reborn championship program. No other program youre considering can offer you that. Sure you all are great and talented, but only at Clemson will you be written into lore as the building blocks of Clemson return to national prominance.

Come to Clemson, write yourself into the record books, let us cheer you down the Hill. Be Tigers

It mainly consisted of stating national title appearances and national exposure, to which I replied ????? Who cares thats not the debate at hand.

My VT buddy, just knows his Hokies are good, which I dont take away from him, but his knowledge doesnt go much further,

My FSU buddy is a little more knowledgable and I can have some good discussions with him. He cheers for the Noles, but sometimes I get the feeling he doesnt know why he is cheering.

I think FSU fans, like my buddy, have become spoiled by their success, much like us Clemson fans were during the 80's. When I talk to my FSU buddy he pulls out names such as Boulware, Dunn, Ward, Sanders......but what about Jones and the many others that have been Seminoles. This is why I think its a great recruiting angle for our coaches. If CJ goes to FSU, sure he'll do great but will anyone remember him????? They certainly have forgotten Jones and he was just there not long ago.

I know one thing for certain, once we(Clemson) get back to elite status, I wont take it for granted. I try to wear orange ever day, just incase a high touted recruit sees me in a mall or out to dinner, so just maybe it will plant an idea in their heads.

I also wear orange alot because I like running into other Clemson fans. you'd be surprised at how many of us there are up here in Maryland

have a chance to go and they are more excited about watching the TIGERS come down the hill than anything. Now that tells me we have something special. They love to watch the games and would never think of leaving early but the entrance really is exciting to them.

“The best moment was on draft day when (N.C. State’s Mario Williams, Manny Lawson and John McCargo) all got picked in the first round,” said Dustin Fry. “That was kind of nice knowing we ran for 254 yards against three first-round defensive linemen.”

And the congregation says.....

Superb perspective...

In so many college entrances, the feeling is the team saying "Look at Us!" Roman candles, fire extinguishers, piped in music, its the WWE come to town.

At Clemson, the emphasis is the crowd saying "We're here for you!" No piped in noise (none was ever needed) no fireworks (unless you invclude the cannon) and the only extinguishing going on is the hopes of our opponent...that "Oh, sh*t!" moment when cascades of noise wash over them, eating away at the concentration and confidence.

Some people laugh when I call it the 25 most exciting seconds in college football, and they may have a point. with the histrionics now used at other schools, "excitment" may not be the best word.

but it rtemains the most meaningful 25 seconds in college football...perhaps in all of sports.

"You have the chance to be fathers to a reborn championship program".I love that sentence from your post. Bear Bryant told the incoming freshmen of his last championship team,"Before you leave Alabama you will win a championship". They did; they won the national title their senior year. Now I ain't no Bear Bryant but I do believe that before last years freshmen and this years incoming guys leave Clemson, they will win the national championship. Who wouldn't want to be part of the team that leaves that legacy?
