Tony Elliott/RB offers/Zamir White
Jul 2, 2017, 6:38 PM
|
|
I've seen a lot of posts on here about Elliott and the RB offers, and I know there is one poster who comments on every post about it being a mistake to not recruit other RBs. Well, let me offer this as a way to look at it that everyone is not thinking of:
First off, an offer is not the same as recruiting. You can recruit a guy and be in contact and visit his school and talk to him four times a week (which Elliott has done with multiple backs) and not give an offer. Now...why would he do that?
Let's take into consideration that he gave his word to Zamir White that he wouldn't offer another RB until after White made a decision. A man's word is his bond, and in the crazy world of recruiting if you break your word it gets around and you have a hard time getting that credibility back. But what Tony has done is not only keep his word, he did it and didn't reap the immediate success of a committment. But now the Clemson coaches can ask for a recruit's word and expect them to keep it. Why? Because they have proven time and time and time again that they keep their word and they keep their promises.
I've already heard that out here in Oregon.
A mistake? Maybe if you're closed-minded. Big picture? If he gave his word it was the right thing to do, and this will pay off the in the long run for Elliott and Clemson.

Good perspective. I'm not sure that means that any critic of the strategy is illegitimate. I think we want all our coaches to keep their word but we would also like to see them maybe not back ourselves into a corner with our words over a kid that seems like he is very vulnerable to be swayed by a RB school. I get you miss all the shots you don't take but at the same time we haven't landed a RB of White's pedigree yet so it would seem like a bit of a gamble to go all in on one. I don't think it's wrong for people to be upset when it doesn't work out like you hoped.

Going all in with White was a gamble, but one our coaches

obviously felt they could afford to lose. To me, that means these two things are also obvious: First, coaches felt we had a very good shot at White to start with. Secondly, they feel very good about our RB situation without White. This could mean they are confident with who we have now, and/or the position we are in with other RB recruits. We have coaches who recruit as well as anybody in the country, and have built Clemson into a National Champion through recruiting. They know exactly what they are doing. This was not a mistake.

cares. Secondly if you are going after the elite players you have to go all in. The coaches have played the recruiting game many years where we have basically no clue the inter workings. You call it posters being upset but it becomes an agenda when they post the same stupid post dozens of times.

No coot! It's not wrong to question strategy. Keeping promises and being honest to the recruits is important. However, White lied to us while we kept our word. With good backs returning, aiming for the best is fine. Next year we have to sign quality backs. I hope this season we see a steady dose of Feaster and Etienne . They are the home run threats.

You don't always need a home run.
Lots of things go into being a runningback: Blocking Receiving Gaining the tough yard.
The leading rusher in NFL history wasn't a "homerun threat".

How did Zamir White lie to Clemson , Tiger Micheal ?
Do you have close relations with him ? What was said between he and our coaches that make you claim there was dishonesty on his part ?

RT, I have no clue where you live, but I would fully recommend you move to downtown Columbia because you are either a "closet" coot or a whiny nervous fan who thinks the "sky is falling."
Good luck figuring out how Clemson suddenly somehow got behind the chickens here in the Midlands. By the way even their fans don't like the hire yesterday. I was impressed by his earnest comments. Tanner is anxious because another bad chapter in USuck sports beyond women's basketball and he will be gone. Football here we come! Good luck Muscrap!

Appreciate the perspective, but if that's the case, then we shouldn't have given our word that we wouldn't offer another RB until he committed. Shouldn't have put ourselves in this position. Nothing wrong with being frank with kids. If they're not feeling it from us, then thanks for your time, but we're moving on, good luck to you.

And before you all jump me and call me a coot for saying that, just because I have a criticism of the coaching staff's methods doesn't mean I think I'm better at their jobs than they are or that I hate the coaches. That is simply not true. A fan can take issue with the process he sees going on and still be supportive.

I think a mistake was made on both sides, with White..
Jul 2, 2017, 8:01 PM
|
|
1. I personally believe Mr White knew where his Mother wanted him to go ( UGa) for reasons we will never know..and being that Mr White seems to do what his Mother wants, he went to Athens where great RB's have gone for 50 years.
2. And, with that said I feel Mr White was leaning very heavy towards UGa the entire process, evident in his coming to Clemson much less often, not intermingling with people at events but staying by himself with his Mother in the stands..and then hitting the Hwy for Athens time & time again and bypassing Clemson.
3. I believe there was a time way before the end that Mr White could have come clean & let Clemson hit the trail for another RB..but didn't for unknown reasons; maybe b/c DaBO & Staff were selling him strong & he was listening to them with his heart but still had another in his mind.
4. I believe our "Sales" Staff believed they could turn him..and failed to do so which is a rarity.
Whatever..Mr White & his MaMa were headed to UGa all the while..while DaBO & Staff were gung-ho that they could turn him since they had to or go down in flames trying!
Nice try!

But I'm holding out for the unexpected offer. Clemson is officially my dream school. And I have so much eligibility left it's unreal. Think of me as a fat, out of breath Rudy. Just give me a chance coach!

Makes sense.
I had seen it said many times we were takimg White or nothing (basically am oversign offer ( and thought that was possible with 4 scholarship RBs on the roster/limited numbers in this class.

oh I miss the days of "Soft" and "Solid" verbals
Jul 2, 2017, 9:33 PM
|
|
I remember when clemson would have like 6 verbals going into Signing Day. Back then you didn't have anybody coming in early or prior to Signing Day. Sometimes I miss the early 2000s. Nowadays it's all about getting that solid commitment. It's all about stars and flair. It's all about what you can do for me. Dabo has impressed me over the years selecting/ approving quality guys to Clemson. I don't see him caring about who wins the "National Recruiting Title" as long as he gets his guys. He will gladly pass on a 5* RB (Cook) if he feels there are character issues. We didn't miss out on White, he missed out on us. As I've said many times, we aren't done with White. We may have given out scholarships in the last few days but Reed and Dabo will visit him in the fall. WR is another area we can go the distance with. Ross and Eagles will get the nod till the end unless another hidden gem comes out of this fall. Cook iand Surtain are in the same boat. Dabo is not only recruiting kids, he is also recruiting their parents. Good parents, good moms, good dads rear good kids. Broken homes, lazy dads and unrealistic moms tend to hurt their children by the time they graduate from HS. Hate last years heisman trophy winner all you want, but his momma has done a wonderful job of keeping his head on straight. Watson had to deal with real life drama with his mom and he responded by not getting in trouble. I realize that their have been some hiccups along the way but nothing like what we see at other schools. We have seen several over the years in Dabo's doghouse but many have bettered themselves and become great contributors to the team. Others get arrested for fraud and drug dealing. Sometimes kids have to learn the hard way. I get super impressed when a kid goes from nothing to something. So when I hear people whine about why we haven't offered any RBs early I just sit back and giggle. Dabo has months to complete this class. He also knows if he finishes the season strong recruiting will be easy. I sorta see him getting knee deep once the Cook Out is over. He pays coaches to recruit and coach so all Dabo has to worry about is being the head football coach. We have great players so let's watch them develop into better players. I'm All In till the end.

Amen. An article linked previously on this site to a UGA site interviewed him after committing and he listed UNC and OSU as the schools that were next on his list. If all the time and effort we invested we still aren't listed in his favorites, give it up.

I don't endorse lying to recruits. But Bama and OSU do it routinely and they don't seem to pay the price for it. I am not sure recruits hold them accountable, as they should.

You mean the corner we are in now ? Which corner ? National Champion's Corner ? ACC Champion's Corner ? ACC Atlantic Champion's Corner ? Palmetto Bowl Champion's Corner ?
That's 4 pretty good corners to be in , what with our recruiting mistakes and all .

The corner you put yourself in when you wait on one player alone! What would have been wrong to be honest with White and ask him if we were a real contender for him? If he had said yes you stick with him. If he had said no you go on. We still have a chance to get a great back. We need to sign one.

Let's assume that your scenario is accurate - we asked if he was serious - and he said "Yes" - so we stuck with him. As it turned out, perhaps we kept our word and he did not keep his. In that case, yes, "we still have a chance to get a great back" - but it shouldn't be him.
If we try to get into the weeds and make allowances for the definition of "commitment", we will lose in the end.
'Bama and OSU enjoy a deeper history of football excellence which allows their arrogance to be overlooked for a while. Defining them as liars who are secondary to Clemson's character and integrity may ultimately depend more on the actions of Clemson, rather than 'Bama and OSU. If we conduct an honest program and win consistently through hard work, then ultimately the perception will change.

The warning signs were there. A five star power back will only come to Clemson if he can accept a blocking role and less than 40 carries a game. We are quarterback centric not running back centric like Georgia.
