One thing you can say about the ACC win %
Jun 3, 2014, 12:38 PM
|
|
is that the ACC has gotten much better as a baseball conference since UVa decided they cared about baseball, Miami was added to the conference, and even teams like WF, Maryland, Duke, and VT have had a few good years. Meanwhile, baseball in the state of SC as a whole has become pretty superlative. That doesn't excuse Clemson from rising with the rest, but you'd have a pretty hard time arguing that things didn't become more difficult for Clemson in the last 10 years.
Probably the worst thing you could say about Leggett is that he hasn't changed as quickly as the game has changed. His struggles have largely come after the advent of the dead bat and ball, while other teams seem to have figured things out a little more easily. It wasn't all that long ago that we had 5'10" second basemen who were hitting 3 HRs in a game, a couple of players had .400 averages, and nearly everybody was hitting over .300. Now I think nobody on the team hit more than 6 or 7 HRs in the season, while only 3 or 4 guys even hit over .300.

Can you do similarly for UCS and FSU and another top team?
Jun 3, 2014, 12:50 PM
|
|
It would be interesting to see how much of the drop is due to parity vs. the program being on a downward slope.
You could also look at the total wins of the top teams for each year...if the average win % of teams at the CWS in 94 was .700 but trended down to .630 by last year it would give a better perspective on Clemson's numbers.
Just a thought for solidifying your argument.

Graphing 101
Jun 3, 2014, 1:28 PM
|

This is a humorous graph "extrapolation" that'll surely get you thrown out of any marketing class.
I'd hate for my "worth" and my life to be represented in this way, on a lot of fronts.
Send this to Colbert or Stewart for their shows.
Heck, you could graph the weather changes this way and get no closer to the truth for the next day or week.

Here's a challenge for you. Find me one - just one - program where you start with a win percentage greater than .750 and can draw me an upward trajectory over a 20 year period. Just one. I'll wait.

True, but Clemson should average more than 40 wins
Jun 3, 2014, 2:22 PM
[ in reply to Re: Leggett by the numbers. ] |

I don't think we should be so concerned about going from an average of around 50 wins to an average of around 40 wins before 2011. The problem has been the last three years, when we've dipped under 40 wins. That's not Clemson Baseball.

However, the downward trend which is continuing shows me that it isn't getting better, only worse. Even the accomplishments map that out with ease.

Tell you what I see out of that graph
Jun 3, 2014, 3:01 PM
|
|
a "program" that his highly dependent on a single recruiting class. I see 3 to 4 year bumps followed by 2 to 3 year gaps then another bump (albeit slightly lower than the previous). That graph really shows the "eras" under Jack. You have the Benson/Koch/Vinings era, the LeCroy era, the Green/Baker/Johnson era, the Harbin/Chalk/Wideman era.
There isn't the consistency and they certainly aren't replacing the talent.

no one can argue with that!! the trend IS DOWN!!!!!!! and it will continue until he is gone..on top of all the other problems(baserunning, fielding, hitting, pitching, just plain fundermentals) recruiting is doing the same thing;DOWN!! we seem to recruit some outstanding guys every year but only 2-3 when we should recruit 5-7 per year!HUGE PROBLEM
