Prayer Request - Some things go beyond football
Jan 21, 2011, 3:59 AM
|
|
I have a prayer request, but it also delves into what special people we have here in Clemson, so please bear with me:
When a good family friend, Charlie, was in his 20s, he had recently graduated with his MBA and was seeking employment when he got into an automobile accident that left him somewhat mentally handicapped. He could still perform basic actions, but his intellect took a severe hit. Charlie, now in his 50s, has since worked within the Department of Agriculture as a mail clerk and as a cashier for the inter-office cafeteria. My now-retired mother, a former loan specialist for USDA, worked alongside him for the better part of 30 years, and befriended Charlie through daily interaction.
Despite the understandable frustrations that come with a handicapp and working a $25,000/year job for almost 30 years when the accomplishments of your youth merit more, Charlie managed to pay off a condo, maintain USC Gamecock season tickets for himself, and travel abroad one week per year every year. He did things that appealed to him, and he became something of an admiration within my mother's office. He overcame a great hidnerance, and made a good life for himself despite extremely modest means.
This week, though, my family learned that Charlie was diagnosed with Stage 4, inoperable brain cancer. Between a combination of his mental state and doctors shielding him, Charlie doesn't quite understand the circumstances, and sometimes forgets why he's now in the hospital. My parents, upon learning this news and knowing Charlie's love for the Gamecocks, decided they would buy a regulation college football and try to get Spurrier's autograph so that they could bring it to Charlie in the hospital.
After speaking with USC's athletic department over the phone, my parents were invited to visit Spurrier's secretary and explain Charlie's predicament to her yesterday afternoon. The secretary, however, explained to my parents that Spurrier is very busy with national signing day just a couple weeks away, and that she couldn't promise she would get the football autographed. She further explained that even if she could get the football autographed, she doubted that she could get Spurrier to write "To Charlie" on it because Spurrier doesn't like to write personals with his autographs. Again, this is coming from the man's personal secretary.
Now I get that coaches are extremely busy during this time of the year, and I understand the idea that if you grant one exception you open a flood gate, but just two months ago I wrote a letter to Dabo's office asking for an autographed picture for my brother for Christmas, and received it within a week. No questions. No obstacles. Just like that...Dabo penned a short note and sent it forward to my brother.
So folks, I ask that you pray for Charlie and keep him in your thoughts. He's a good man - the best there can be - who has already suffered through enough unfortunate experiences. Additionally, while we all love to see Clemson win football games, please count your blessings we have a man hired at Clemson who provides much more than coaching to the Clemson community.
I have no doubts that if Charlie were in Greenville instead of Columbia, and if I informed the coaching staff of his situation, that Dabo would do all that is reasonable to allow a good man the happiness he deserves in his final months - including signing a football.
I don't mean to use Charlie's situation simply as a story to tell about Dabo or Spurrier. That's not my intent. Charlie's situation just makes me feel like we ought to be reminded of what we have while we have it, and appreciate the little actions like our head coach performs that make us human.

Prayers for the family and a suggestion...

...if Charlie's love of UCS stretches beyond football, perhaps the coach or players from another sport could assist.
If he is a baseball fan, I think you'd have much better luck with Ray Tanner anyway.
God bless!

Permit me to share another Dabo story
Jan 21, 2011, 9:00 AM
|
|
Last year, during football season, the son of a woman who works very closely with my wife was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. The cancer was very aggressive and the young mans health deteriorated rapidly. He was hospitalized and began undergoing a battery of tests and treatments. In spite of the doctors best efforts it soon became apparent that this young man (age 12) would not be with us much longer. He was a die hard Tiger fan so someone gave him a Clemson mini helmet. He mentioned that he would like to have it signed by Dabo. My wife asked me if I could/would help with this. A day or two later, I phoned Dabo's secretary and shared the young mans story with her. She told me that if I would drop off the helmet (which I did) she would have Dabo sign it and get it back to me. A couple of days later on the Friday before the Clemson/UVa game, Dabo shows-up at the young mans hospital room with several of his players (including CJ and Jacoby Ford), an authentic helmet that he had signed, and a football signed by the entire team. I wasn't there to see it but I did see the pictures and the smile on that young mans face was as big and bright as you could possibly imagine. While I have been critical of Dabo's coaching at times, there is no question the man has a heart as big as all out doors.

Give me Dabo and his heart over Spurrier any day.
I once played in a charity golf tournament in Florida, I parked a couple of cars up from Spurrier. An elderly gentlemen came up to Spurrier with a UF golf bag and asked him to sign it. Spurrier gave the man a dirty look and loudly said - "god - it's already starting". Obviously referring to him being asked to sign. While I do not walk in his shoes - I sure would hope to be "human" and appreciate the people who support me.
While there are lot's of great caring Gamecocks out there. I sincerelly believe that Clemson is a special place - more like a kinship - while USC is more of a school. Just my opinion.

Prayers sent for Charlie and his family. There are a lot of postings on TigerNet that I do not like but occasionally someone reminds me that there are people out there who overcome more than missed catches or field goals and there are those who take time to offer care and compassion where others don't. Thanks for reminding us of this.

But at the end of the day, that is the difference between an established coach and a coach still auditioning for the job.

Somehow, I think Spurrier would have had the very same attitude his first year at Duke.

I agree, It says what the man is made of. The going to see this kid had nothing to do with trying to earn the job. Very few people even knew about it. Some of you have such dislike for the man because he wasn't your choice, nothing he does will ever be good enough.

My sister is a coot and was at a benefit dinner for Juvenile Diabetes and Spurrier was a speaker. They had items for auction and my sister paid...gulp....$2000 (we know why they serve wine before these auctions) for a football that SOS would autograph. She took the ball to SOS after the auction and asked him to sign it to her grandson who has Juvenile Diabetes and was in the hospital. He would not do it. Only signed his name.
I told her she should have raise him a Tiger fan and she could have sent a football to Clemson and had it signed for free and just donated to Juvenile Diabetes.

The secretary called this morning and said she received the autographed football today. She stopped him and had him write a note in addition to his autograph.
Based on her comments yesterday I had my doubts, but I'm glad that Spurrier came through and took an additional moment to write a note in this instance.
Thank y'all for the prayers! They mean a lot to Charlie and to my family.

I am very happy Spurrier came through for your friend. Being a huge Gamecock fan that makes me proud. I know there would be no doubt that Dabo would do that, he is a fine man. I feel for him and what some of the so called fans are going to put him through......

Prayer lifted ...

On Charlie's behalf .... he sounds like quite the testament of will and determination. Little things do matter and I am glad that Coach Spurrier was able to provide the signature and note ... Also, very commendable for the secretary to follow up on this ... things can easily get lost in the shuffle and I am sure that coaches receive requests like this very often, so she is to be commended.
I am thankful every day for the mercies from our Lord bestowed upon me, despite of my unfaithfulness to Him.
Life is good - Peace!

Despite what many say about Spurrier & others.....

Coaches that make it to this level care about their players, or they would not be able to get top notch recruits.
Prayers sent..... Instances like this I really have to look back and laugh at how much people put into college sports when they are so minute in the grand scheme of things.
I really hope things can go as well as possible for him
